A video collection featuring some of our favorite hairstyles and tutorials from the past year:
Since the year is coming to a close, we wanted to take a minute to tell each of you THANK YOU for joining us through our hair journey! We appreciate your visits, comments, likes, thumbs ups, subscriptions, emails, and friendships more than you will ever know!! You are each a huge part of our "hairstyling family" and bring much joy into our lives.
I thought we would go back through our archives and choose a few of our favorite hairstyle tutorials from 2011 to showcase in this video. I had almost forgotten about some of these styles! It was also fun to see how much the Princess's hair has grown over the past 12 months.
Enjoy our "Best Of 2011" and Happy New Year!
Candy Cane French Braid With Ribbon
Christmas Hairstyles - Candy Cane French Braid With Ribbon

Lace french braiding was used to create the curved candy cane shaped braid in this style. If you don't know how to french braid, this look could be accomplished by making a regular 3 strand braid and pinning it into place with bobby pins. This style can also be done with or without the ribbon, whichever you prefer.

Merry Christmas!!
Holiday Updo Hairstyle
Elegant Updo Hairstyle With Curls For Medium Length Hair

The variation we are showing today works best with medium length to long hair. I'm thinking this fancy hair style would be perfect for a Prom, Homecoming, flower girl, Christmas party, New Years Eve, a bride, wedding, or other special occasion.
The curls used in creating this style were made using our nylon sock curling technique- which can be found here: No Heat Nylon Curls

How to make a curly updo video tutorial:
Depending on the thickness, length, and texture of your hair... you may need to use more bobby pins than we show in the video to keep everything in place.
How To Curl Hair With A Nylon Sock
Easy No Heat Curls Using Nylons
I was a little hesitant about posting this curling tutorial, as it is sort of a no-brainer. I'm sure most of you have heard of, or used this technique in the past. But, we have a fancy holiday updo we will be posting soon and curls are required! I wanted to make sure we had a curling tutorial available that everyone could do.
This "no heat" curling method is very similar to the technique used in creating "rag curls." We prefer nylons (or tights) for creating these curls (as opposed to other material) as nylon socks are stretchy and soft. We tried using nylons a few years ago and noticed the knots are so much easier to take out when you are done, are easier to tie, and seem to stay in better while the curls are drying as well. The elasticity in the socks seem to be made for making curls! We haven't used any other type of rag since.
When we get snags or holes in our nylons (pretty much every time we wear them) ;) we cut them up into strips and add them to our curling stash! We love that this method is easy, cheap, and non damaging to the hair.
As a side note: I am not completely opposed to using heat for styling and will use curling irons, flat irons and other heat sources to create curls occasionally.... especially when we don't have time to wait for curlers to dry. I think if you use heat protectant and don't go crazy, a little heat shouldn't cause too much damage. But, of course we like to avoid heat whenever possible to promote healthy hair.

I'm hoping to have time to upload the fancy schmancy updo soon. It would be great for holiday parties and other occasions you may be planning. Keep an eye out!
Criss Cross Ribbon Hairstyle For Toddlers
Baby Hairstyles - Criss Cross Ribbon French Braids

If you're not sure how to sew in the ribbon, click here: Ribbon lacing hairstyle video.

We accomplished this hairstyle while "The Pea" was in her high chair eating and playing. I have found that it's easiest to get everything ready (elastics, ribbons, combs, water, etc.) before I start... and work quickly while she's distracted with toys or food! ;)
Toddler Hairstyles, A Side Ponytail
Cute hairstyle for babies and toddlers - A side ponytail with "connectors."

We're starting with this fun side ponytail style. Of course, being under 2 yrs old "The Pea's" hair isn't anywhere near long enough to wrap all the way around her head into a side pony. So, I have split the hair into sections. If the hair you are working with is long enough to get into a little ponytail, you are good to go! This technique of "connecting" the ponytails together works great for many styles when working with short and/or fine hair.

Candy Cane Braid Hairstyle
Christmas Hairstyles, The Candy Cane Braid!

We stumbled upon this braid by accident one day. It's actually just a 4 strand woven braid (which we have shown on video before.) The position and placement of the ribbon is what forms the stripes and makes this braid "holiday worthy." :)

You will need fairly long hair to complete this style. If your hair is shorter, you might try adding the braid in a half ponytail - or closer to the top of your head (where you have more length to work with.)
Here's the video tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)
A side note: The princess and I thought this would look so neat on someone with blonde hair and red ribbon.... Just like a candy cane!
Triple Twisty Waterfall Braid Hairstyle
Triple Twist Waterfall Braid - Unique Hairstyle

At first glace this style looks quite complicated and time consuming. But honestly, it can easily be completed in less than ten minutes. With practice you could probably do it in 5!

Btw, In case you are wondering about the curls, we used our regular old curling iron to create them. You can find a video showing the method we used here: Curing Iron Ringlets

Starting the french braid at the back of the head instead of the usual position in the front (like we did with this style) just adds a little something special. :)

The video tutorial. Enjoy!
Waterfall Twist Braid
Waterfall French Braid... With A Twist!

As you'll notice in our video tutorial, this technique is very easy and simple. This is a waterfall braid made without actually braiding at all, but twisting instead.
Same braid but doubled up just for fun, the same way we did our "double faux waterfall braid."

*In case you are wondering, the clips we used in this hairstyle are made by Conair.

Fishtail Braid Headband Hairstyle, Dancing With The Stars
Quick and Easy Hairstyles: Fishtail Braid Headband Cheat

We purchased this cute fish tail aka fish bone / herringbone braided headband at "Sally Beauty Supply." I believe it is synthetic hair. The brand is Bellissima and is part of the "Dancing With The Stars" hair collection. I'm sure similar headbands can be found in most stores that carry hair accessories, or at Amazon here: Braided Headband
This headband can be incorporated into many hairstyles as an accent to add an adorable bohemian, hippie look. This "cheat" is so much easier and faster than braiding your own hair and can work even if you have short hair! My daughter has been wearing this non stop since we got it. I think it's one of our favorite accessories!
This has been great for us on school mornings... a 5 minute, easy hairstyle. ;) I actually have worn it myself a few times as well! It can work for every age (girls, tweens, teens, and adults) every hair type, and every hair length!
*This is not a sponsored post. We purchased the headband and thought it was so cute, we just wanted to share.
No French Braid Crown Braid
The Crown Braid, Without French Braiding!
Hi guys. So, you may remember the circular crown braid (or never ending braid) that we posted awhile back. I've also seen several cute variations on Youtube and other hairstyling sites recently... but all of them have involved french braiding. When we posted our variation of the style, I know we had a lot of disappointed people who wanted to try it, but didn't know how to french braid.
Then, a few weeks ago I was looking through Pinterest and happened upon this adorable braided crown......

*The only problem now is that you are going to need fairly long hair to pull this off. If the hair you are working with is on the shorter side, you might try placing each of the braids over the top of her head instead of wrapping them around (similar to what we did with our Christmas Heidi Braids.) Anyway, I think the tutorial on A Cup Of Jo is great and love her blog as well. She has lots of neat ideas so watch out...... you might be there for awhile. ;)
Elegant Bun - Halloween Princess Hair
Updo Hairstyles, Elegant Bun - Princess Hair For Halloween

We show two different options for this style in our video. Both fancy buns are quick and easy (no french braiding required.) I know it can get hectic while getting everyone ready for Halloween. And if your house is anything like mine... you may not have a lot of time for hair before Trick or Treating. This style shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes to complete. :)

What are you (or your kids) planning on being for Halloween this year?
Kim Kardashian Inspired Hairstyle, Boho Ribbon Braids
Kim Kardashian Hairstyles, Boho Beach Braids With Ribbon
(I apologize for the blurry picture, it's the best I could find of this trendy braided hairstyle while searching Google.) I actually haven't seen much of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians." But, one night I was flipping through the channels and happened upon this cute ribbon braided hairstyle on Kim. Of course, I took a mental note of a hairdo we must try! This hairstyle was shown on an episode where the Kardashian family went to Bora Bora for vacation.

As a side note: Yes, I do realize her face is covered. ;) I know it's a little disappointing but I'm just trying to protect my daughter. There are a lot of creepy people out there, you know? We have shown her darling face in earlier videos and blog posts. But as some of you may have noticed- over the past year or so, we have only been showing hairstyle pictures from the side or back. Thanks for understanding! With this hairstyle I thought you really needed a front view to see the whole thing. (Hence, the pink blob!) Moving on.....

Btw, I have also seen Kourtney Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian sporting similar hairdos with accents in their braids from time to time. Although I don't know much about them personally, I have to say they are trendsetters and have very cute hair!
Thank you, Kardashians for the cute style idea! Here is our video tutorial:
This fun and trendy look could work for little girls as well as teens. These ribbon braids (or fabric braids) have a very beachy, Bohemian or natural look to them. This hair style also reminds me of something you might see on a medieval princess or Native American. (Halloween Hairstyles?)
Halloween Costumes, Pumpkins, and Treat Ideas

Halloween Hairstyles, Princess Braided Headband With Jewels
Halloween Hairstyles - Hairstyle For A Princess

This style is a combination of our "beaded french braid" hairstyle. And a style from our friend Mindy at "Cute Girls Hairstyles" (braided headband into a rose.)
This unique half-up princess style could work for a dance, Prom, Homecoming, wedding, flower girl or other special occasion (as well as Halloween.) If you wanted a more grown up or sophisticated look, I would recommend using bobby pins to secure the rosette bun (instead of the clips.)

Is anyone else going to be a princess for Halloween? I hope so. We have a few more Princess hair style ideas coming! And, the next style we will be posting doesn't involve french braiding (for all of you non-french braiders.) ;)

Pleated Ribbon Braid Hairstyle Video
Loose French Braiding, Unique "Pleated Ribbon Braid"
This loose ribbon hairstyle is a variation on a 4 strand ribbon braid that I first saw on my friend Jenn's Youtube channel (Girly Do's.) After doing some research, I believe the official name for this braid is "jewel in the middle." My daughter wears the regular tight version of this braid quite a bit to school, for sports, gymnastics, dance, and other occasions. I wondered what the plaits would look like stretched out (as we have done with other french braids) so... we tried it and we both love how it turned out! This hair style can also be done without ribbon (using a 4th strand of hair) but I prefer the look of the colorful ribbon running down the middle. :) We're excited about the unique bunched up and "pleated" look of this hairdo.
We actually ended up filming this hairstyle twice because our camera battery died halfway through the first video! The princess didn't mind though, as she loves the style and got to wear it twice in one week. ;) As you can see in this second hairstyle photo, I braided down to the ends of her hair instead of stopping the braid where the french braid ends (like the first photo.) I love the style both ways.
Here's the video tutorial, enjoy!
I think this would be a lovely hair style for a special occasion. Maybe a flower girl, prom, or even a bride?
