2011 Hairstyles

A video collection featuring some of our favorite hairstyles and tutorials from the past year:

Since the year is coming to a close, we wanted to take a minute to tell each of you THANK YOU for joining us through our hair journey! We appreciate your visits, comments, likes, thumbs ups, subscriptions, emails, and friendships more than you will ever know!! You are each a huge part of our "hairstyling family" and bring much joy into our lives.

I thought we would go back through our archives and choose a few of our favorite hairstyle tutorials from 2011 to showcase in this video. I had almost forgotten about some of these styles! It was also fun to see how much the Princess's hair has grown over the past 12 months.

Enjoy our "Best Of 2011" and Happy New Year!

Candy Cane French Braid With Ribbon

Christmas Hairstyles - Candy Cane French Braid With Ribbon
We did this fun Christmas hairstyle for a Holiday party at school. The Princess loved it. ;)

Lace french braiding was used to create the curved candy cane shaped braid in this style. If you don't know how to french braid, this look could be accomplished by making a regular 3 strand braid and pinning it into place with bobby pins. This style can also be done with or without the ribbon, whichever you prefer.

Although we love this style, I realize this look may be a little over the top for some. For a more subtle/grown up candy cane style, you might prefer the candy cane braid we posted a couple of weeks ago which can be found here: candy cane braid.

Oh and by the way, we came up with a new curling method to create the curls shown in these pictures. It really didn't turn out quite like I had planned and I wasn't in love with the curls (fail) so we didn't make a video. We'll keep working on it though. If you want curls to go with your candy cane, you might try our heatless nylon sock method or a regular old curling iron if you don't have time for curls to dry. ;)

Holiday Updo Hairstyle

Elegant Updo Hairstyle With Curls For Medium Length Hair

holiday updo hairstyleThis fancy schmancy special occasion updo is very similar to our Taylor Swift inspired hairstyle that was posted when the princess had shorter hair. The shorter hair version can be found here: Taylor Swift Updo

The variation we are showing today works best with medium length to long hair. I'm thinking this fancy hair style would be perfect for a Prom, Homecoming, flower girl, Christmas party, New Years Eve, a bride, wedding, or other special occasion.

The curls used in creating this style were made using our nylon sock curling technique- which can be found here: No Heat Nylon Curls

Depending on the thickness, length, and texture of your hair... you may need to use more bobby pins than we show in the video to keep everything in place.

How To Curl Hair With A Nylon Sock

Easy No Heat Curls Using Nylons

I was a little hesitant about posting this curling tutorial, as it is sort of a no-brainer. I'm sure most of you have heard of, or used this technique in the past. But, we have a fancy holiday updo we will be posting soon and curls are required! I wanted to make sure we had a curling tutorial available that everyone could do.

This "no heat" curling method is very similar to the technique used in creating "rag curls." We prefer nylons (or tights) for creating these curls (as opposed to other material) as nylon socks are stretchy and soft. We tried using nylons a few years ago and noticed the knots are so much easier to take out when you are done, are easier to tie, and seem to stay in better while the curls are drying as well. The elasticity in the socks seem to be made for making curls! We haven't used any other type of rag since.

When we get snags or holes in our nylons (pretty much every time we wear them) ;) we cut them up into strips and add them to our curling stash! We love that this method is easy, cheap, and non damaging to the hair.

As a side note: I am not completely opposed to using heat for styling and will use curling irons, flat irons and other heat sources to create curls occasionally.... especially when we don't have time to wait for curlers to dry. I think if you use heat protectant and don't go crazy, a little heat shouldn't cause too much damage. But, of course we like to avoid heat whenever possible to promote healthy hair.

I'm hoping to have time to upload the fancy schmancy updo soon. It would be great for holiday parties and other occasions you may be planning. Keep an eye out!

Criss Cross Ribbon Hairstyle For Toddlers

Baby Hairstyles - Criss Cross Ribbon French Braids

ribbon criss cross hairstyle If you have followed this hair blog for any amount of time, you've probably noticed that we love adding ribbon to our hairstyles. Even an ordinary hairstyle or braid can become spectacular for a special occasion or holiday when ribbon is added! We have done many ribbon lacing hairstyles in the past on "The Princess" but haven't attempted anything like this on "The Pea" (up until now.)
ribbon french braid baby hair I know some of you may be thinking "this is way too time consuming and my toddler would never hold still for that".....right? I can assure you that this toddler is quite normal and doesn't hold still either! Quite honestly, this only took about 5 minutes to complete. The braids are only a few inches long and the ribbon was sewn in with our plastic needle in 6 quick stitches. You'll notice that my braiding is far from perfect and the parts aren't straight. But I think it turned out super cute anyway!

If you're not sure how to sew in the ribbon, click here: Ribbon lacing hairstyle video.
toddler hairstyle with ribbonI only used the hair on top of her head to make the braids, and pulled everything else into a side ponytail. You could leave the rest of her hair down if you want to (or if it's not quite long enough to get into a ponytail.)

We accomplished this hairstyle while "The Pea" was in her high chair eating and playing. I have found that it's easiest to get everything ready (elastics, ribbons, combs, water, etc.) before I start... and work quickly while she's distracted with toys or food! ;)

Toddler Hairstyles, A Side Ponytail

Cute hairstyle for babies and toddlers - A side ponytail with "connectors."

holiday hairstyles for babiesMany of you have been asking for more toddler and baby hair style ideas. You're in luck! We'll be posting a couple of toddler holiday hairdos this week.... just for you!

We're starting with this fun side ponytail style. Of course, being under 2 yrs old "The Pea's" hair isn't anywhere near long enough to wrap all the way around her head into a side pony. So, I have split the hair into sections. If the hair you are working with is long enough to get into a little ponytail, you are good to go! This technique of "connecting" the ponytails together works great for many styles when working with short and/or fine hair.

cute hairstyles for a babyI started on the side of her head where I had parted her hair on top (the left) and worked my way over to the right. To keep the flyaways down, I recommend using water to wet each section as you're going. And if the hair you are working with is extra fine, a tiny bit of pomade works wonders.
lady bug hair baretteWhen I was adding the hair in for the last ponytail (on the right side) some of the hair from the front was not quite long enough to reach the elastic, so we added a cute little clip to help hold everything in.

christmas hair idea for toddlersWe used 4 elastics total. You may need to use a few more if the hair you are working with is super short.

christmas hairstyle for babyI think this would be a cute hairstyle for the upcoming holidays (or really any time.) If you wanted to make a halo or Christmas wreath out of her hair, you could bring the connecting ponytails all the way around her head. That would be adorable!

Candy Cane Braid Hairstyle

Christmas Hairstyles, The Candy Cane Braid!

christmas hairstyles for girlsThis "candy cane braid" (which we named after the stripy pattern of ribbon running down the braid) is the first of several Christmas and Holiday hairstyles we plan on posting this year. We've been having so much fun!

We stumbled upon this braid by accident one day. It's actually just a 4 strand woven braid (which we have shown on video before.) The position and placement of the ribbon is what forms the stripes and makes this braid "holiday worthy." :)
christmas hairstyleOf course, this braid doesn't have to be just for Christmas. It really would be darling anytime. For a more "grown up" look, you could loosen up the braid and add a little mess. I could see this working for teens and adults as well.

You will need fairly long hair to complete this style. If your hair is shorter, you might try adding the braid in a half ponytail - or closer to the top of your head (where you have more length to work with.)

Here's the video tutorial:  (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

A side note: The princess and I thought this would look so neat on someone with blonde hair and red ribbon.... Just like a candy cane!

Triple Twisty Waterfall Braid Hairstyle

Triple Twist Waterfall Braid - Unique Hairstyle

triple waterfall twist braidWe have had so much fun with the waterfall twist braid from the other day. The Princess has been wearing lots of different variations of it! This hairstyle is probably our favorite variation that we tried. This triple braid reminds me a bit of the carousel braid that we posted ages ago, does anyone remember that?

At first glace this style looks quite complicated and time consuming. But honestly, it can easily be completed in less than ten minutes. With practice you could probably do it in 5!
cascading braidYou could choose to leave your hair down, or tie it back into some type of ponytail, braid or bun. The style will definitely hold up better if you tie the hair back....but looks gorgeous down. So I guess it would depend on the occasion and your preference as to which way you decide to wear it.
waterfall triple braidLeft down, I think this would be a lovely hair style for a flower girl or special occasion. You could add some curls and maybe some flowers or jewels to spice it up!

Basket Weave Hairstyle Design (By Request)

Basket Weave Hairstyle Tutorial

basket weave hairstyleThe woven hairstyle image above has been posted on our facebook page and requested in email probably more than any other style request we have received. This image has also been pinned all over Pinterest lately. When we were first sent this picture, there was a link to an account on http://tumblr.com (which I'm assuming was the account of the person who created this style.) That account has since been removed... so I'm not sure who to give credit to. If anyone knows who the creator of this style is or has a link to the original, please let me know and I'll add it in. ;)

Our recreation:

basketweavingWhen I first saw this hairstyle, I thought I could easily accomplish the look by using our Design Weaver the same way we did our basket weave. Well, I actually ran into some trouble with that. It was very difficult to keep the hair underneath separate from the weaving on top and it just didn't lay right. I also tried braiding in the weave by hand (with was pretty much a disaster) lol.
woven hairWell, we finally came up with a way to make it work -and I think it came out ok. I'm still not exactly sure how the original style was created and it would be interesting to know! As you can see, our version of this basket weave is not quite as perfect looking as the original. Pretty close though, right?
basket weave braidAnyway, here is the video tutorial. If you attempt this one I would love to see pictures on our facebook page! Thank you to those who requested this... It was a fun challenge!

If you like the look of basket weaving, woven braids, or weaving in general, here are a few more hairstyles to try:

The Braided Part - A Mostly Down Hairstyle

How To Braid Your Bangs... With A Tweek. The "Braided Part" Hairstyle.
front braid hairstyleThis fun braided hairstyle is a variation of one of our hairstyle posts from the past: Braided Bangs With A Tweek Ponytail. This is the "hair mostly down" version. We're calling it the "Braided Part Hairstyle" because the braid is right where the part would normally be!
long curly hairAnd wow, isn't her hair getting long again? It has actually grown back quite quickly since her Locks Of Love cut!

Btw, In case you are wondering about the curls, we used our regular old curling iron to create them. You can find a video showing the method we used here: Curing Iron Ringlets
braided fringeWe love braided bangs hairstyles (or fringe depending on where you're from.) The princess probably wears the hair in the front of her head in some type of braid or twist at least once a week!

Starting the french braid at the back of the head instead of the usual position in the front (like we did with this style) just adds a little something special. :)
braided bangsThis hairstyle would be cute on any age. A hairstyle for little girls - up to adults, and everything in between in my opinion.

The video tutorial. Enjoy!

Waterfall Twist Braid

Waterfall French Braid... With A Twist!
waterfall french braidWe love the regular waterfall braid (or fairytale / floating braid) and as you've probably noticed, we like to play around with it and try different waterfall variations. This "waterfall twist braid" is quickly becoming one of our favorite variations!

As you'll notice in our video tutorial, this technique is very easy and simple. This is a waterfall braid made without actually braiding at all, but twisting instead.
Same braid but doubled up just for fun, the same way we did our "double faux waterfall braid."
waterfall twist braid doublePS Keep an eye out for a very fun and unique style using this braid coming soon!

*In case you are wondering, the clips we used in this hairstyle are made by Conair.

Fishtail Braid Headband Hairstyle, Dancing With The Stars

Quick and Easy Hairstyles: Fishtail Braid Headband Cheat

fish braid headbandWe have done a few hairstyles in the past using the Princess's actual hair to make a braided headband. These are some of our favorite styles and I love the look of braids crossing over her cute head! I do realize though, that fairly long hair is needed to create a style like that and it can be difficult for some to arrange the braids (and keep them in place throughout the day.) This is a fun cheat!

We purchased this cute fish tail aka fish bone / herringbone braided headband at "Sally Beauty Supply." I believe it is synthetic hair. The brand is Bellissima and is part of the "Dancing With The Stars" hair collection. I'm sure similar headbands can be found in most stores that carry hair accessories, or at Amazon here: Braided Headband

This headband can be incorporated into many hairstyles as an accent to add an adorable bohemian, hippie look. This "cheat" is so much easier and faster than braiding your own hair and can work even if you have short hair! My daughter has been wearing this non stop since we got it. I think it's one of our favorite accessories!

This has been great for us on school mornings... a 5 minute, easy hairstyle. ;) I actually have worn it myself a few times as well! It can work for every age (girls, tweens, teens, and adults) every hair type, and every hair length!

*This is not a sponsored post. We purchased the headband and thought it was so cute, we just wanted to share.

No French Braid Crown Braid

The Crown Braid, Without French Braiding!

Hi guys. So, you may remember the circular crown braid (or never ending braid) that we posted awhile back. I've also seen several cute variations on Youtube and other hairstyling sites recently... but all of them have involved french braiding. When we posted our variation of the style, I know we had a lot of disappointed people who wanted to try it, but didn't know how to french braid.

Then, a few weeks ago I was looking through Pinterest and happened upon this adorable braided crown......

braided crown hairstyleCute, right? And, this style was done with regular three strand braids! You can find the easy step by step tutorial to recreate this look here: Crown Braid Tutorial

*The only problem now is that you are going to need fairly long hair to pull this off. If the hair you are working with is on the shorter side, you might try placing each of the braids over the top of her head instead of wrapping them around (similar to what we did with our Christmas Heidi Braids.) Anyway, I think the tutorial on A Cup Of Jo is great and love her blog as well. She has lots of neat ideas so watch out...... you might be there for awhile. ;)

Elegant Bun - Halloween Princess Hair

Updo Hairstyles, Elegant Bun - Princess Hair For Halloween
fancy updo hairstyleThis "fancy schmancy" braided bun with beads would be a great Halloween hairstyle to go along with many costumes such as: A princess, (fairytale or medieval) Tinkerbell, a ballerina, Barbie, many Disney Characters, Cinderella, a fairy, a pretty witch (and many others.) You could even add a tiara in the front if you wanted to for some extra princess flair.

We show two different options for this style in our video. Both fancy buns are quick and easy (no french braiding required.) I know it can get hectic while getting everyone ready for Halloween. And if your house is anything like mine... you may not have a lot of time for hair before Trick or Treating. This style shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes to complete. :)

elegant bun hairstyleOf course, this updo doesn't have to be just for Halloween. It could also work if you are needing a quick and easy (but elegant) style for the prom, homecoming, a recital, wedding, flower girl, communion, church, or other special occasion. We're loving the sparkle and uniqueness the accent beads add to this sleek bun.

Kim Kardashian Inspired Hairstyle, Boho Ribbon Braids

Kim Kardashian Hairstyles, Boho Beach Braids With Ribbon

kim kardashian braidsPhoto courtesy Google Images

(I apologize for the blurry picture, it's the best I could find of this trendy braided hairstyle while searching Google.) I actually haven't seen much of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians." But, one night I was flipping through the channels and happened upon this cute ribbon braided hairstyle on Kim. Of course, I took a mental note of a hairdo we must try! This hairstyle was shown on an episode where the Kardashian family went to Bora Bora for vacation.

kim kardashian hairstyleHere are the cute beachy ribbon side braids recreated on our Princess. LOVE!

As a side note: Yes, I do realize her face is covered. ;) I know it's a little disappointing but I'm just trying to protect my daughter. There are a lot of creepy people out there, you know? We have shown her darling face in earlier videos and blog posts. But as some of you may have noticed- over the past year or so, we have only been showing hairstyle pictures from the side or back. Thanks for understanding! With this hairstyle I thought you really needed a front view to see the whole thing. (Hence, the pink blob!) Moving on.....

kardashian hairstylesThe Princess has naturally pin straight hair and this is how it looks with nothing done to it (air dried after her bath.) Yes, she is lucky! If you have waves or curls, I would just leave them and go with the flow! This is meant to be a quick and easy, no hassle beach style.

Btw, I have also seen Kourtney Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian sporting similar hairdos with accents in their braids from time to time. Although I don't know much about them personally, I have to say they are trendsetters and have very cute hair!

Thank you, Kardashians for the cute style idea! Here is our video tutorial:

This fun and trendy look could work for little girls as well as teens. These ribbon braids (or fabric braids) have a very beachy, Bohemian or natural look to them. This hair style also reminds me of something you might see on a medieval princess or Native American. (Halloween Hairstyles?)

Halloween Hairstyles, Princess Braided Headband With Jewels

Halloween Hairstyles - Hairstyle For A Princess

Halloween hairstyles My daughter is planning on being a princess for Halloween (what else?) She wanted something with princessy braids, and in her words "bling."

This style is a combination of our "beaded french braid" hairstyle. And a style from our friend Mindy at "Cute Girls Hairstyles" (braided headband into a rose.)

This unique half-up princess style could work for a dance, Prom, Homecoming, wedding, flower girl or other special occasion (as well as Halloween.) If you wanted a more grown up or sophisticated look, I would recommend using bobby pins to secure the rosette bun (instead of the clips.)
princess hairstylesYou could use many different types of beads, yarn, jewelry, ribbons or other accessories to change up the look of this hairdo. I'm thinking some natural toned beads, or rope/leather would make an adorable bohemian looking style or something you would see at a renaissance fair. You could even use an accent braid strung along the back of the hairdo instead of the beads if you wanted to.
princess hairstyle ideasThe video tutorial:

Is anyone else going to be a princess for Halloween? I hope so. We have a few more Princess hair style ideas coming! And, the next style we will be posting doesn't involve french braiding (for all of you non-french braiders.) ;)

Pleated Ribbon Braid Hairstyle Video

Loose French Braiding, Unique "Pleated Ribbon Braid"

loose french braiding with ribbonThis loose ribbon hairstyle is a variation on a 4 strand ribbon braid that I first saw on my friend Jenn's Youtube channel (Girly Do's.) After doing some research, I believe the official name for this braid is "jewel in the middle." My daughter wears the regular tight version of this braid quite a bit to school, for sports, gymnastics, dance, and other occasions. I wondered what the plaits would look like stretched out (as we have done with other french braids) so... we tried it and we both love how it turned out! This hair style can also be done without ribbon (using a 4th strand of hair) but I prefer the look of the colorful ribbon running down the middle. :) We're excited about the unique bunched up and "pleated" look of this hairdo.

pleated ribbon hair styleWe actually ended up filming this hairstyle twice because our camera battery died halfway through the first video! The princess didn't mind though, as she loves the style and got to wear it twice in one week. ;) As you can see in this second hairstyle photo, I braided down to the ends of her hair instead of stopping the braid where the french braid ends (like the first photo.) I love the style both ways.

Here's the video tutorial, enjoy!

I think this would be a lovely hair style for a special occasion. Maybe a flower girl, prom, or even a bride?
