Rainbow Sunrise Braid Hair Tutorial For St. Patrick's Day
Hey guys! Today we are sharing a fun and colorful way to accent the top of your braids.
This rainbow ribbon design would be a great hairstyle for St. Patrick's Day or year round. Of course, you can use any colors or type of ribbons you would like to create your own "sunrise" design. You could use red and green ribbons at Christmas time. Pastel colors for Easter. Red, white, and blue for the 4th of July in the U.S. (or your own countries colors if you are outside of the U.S.) You could even incorporate your school or team colors for sporting events, cheer leading, gymnastics, dance, etc.
We love that this is an easy hairstyle, but still unique and eye catching. The day my daughter wore this braid, she had several people ask if the design was a barrette or hair clip, then when they realized the ribbons were woven (or sewn) into her hair, they wanted to know how!

We chose to finish this style with a french braid. This would also work with a dutch braid, fishtail braid, twist braid, pull-through braid, 4 strand, etc.
This hairstyle will work best with long hair or medium length hair, straight, wavy, or curly.
Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
- Ribbon (you can use any colors you would like.) The ribbons we used were 1/4 inch wide, and about 1 ft long.
- 2 clear hair elastics
- You will need some type of needle to sew in the ribbons. I recommend using a blunt or plastic needle to avoid poking your head! Plastic needles can be found in the craft department of most stores or online (affiliate.)
- Finishing hairspray or gel

Shamrock Ponytail Hairstyle
*Original Pictures via 2009 Princess Hairstyles
In this tutorial we are going "retro" and recreating a St. Patrick's Day hairstyle that we originally posted on our website in picture form back in 2009! To create this shamrock (or 3 leaf clover hairstyle) we are basically using the same method (x3) that we used to create our " easy heart ponytail" (which we also posted in 2009 for Valentine's Day.)
Shamrock Hairstyle Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)
Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
- 9 small elastics.
- 2 medium elastics. The green elastics we used in this hairstyle are "goody ouchless" brand (affiliate) and can be found in most stores that sell hair accessories.
- Pomade, water, gel, etc. (To help control flyaways.)
- Of course, you could add a festive St. Patricks day themed bow or ribbon to the center of the shamrock for an extra splash of green if you want to.
St. Patrick's Day Hairstyles, Braided Ribbon Headband and Clover
This week we wanted to put together a quick St. Patrick's Day hairstyle idea, since St. Patrick's is right around the corner. ;) This hairstyle is a spin off of a technique we posted a few years ago, the ribbon flower/clover. We think this ribbon "4 leaf clover" looks cute as an accent to the braided headband on this style.
Of course, this hairstyle can be used for other occasions besides just St. Patrick's Day. The green ribbon can be switched out for any color you want. And, instead of forming a clover or shamrock with the ribbon, you could actually just tie a regular bow instead.
We were trying to keep this hairstyle fairly simple and quick. But if you want to create the headband using a French braiding technique, you can definitely add in hair from the bangs area while you are braiding for a more intricate braid. Also, if the 4 strand braid is too difficult or time consuming for your liking, you can actually make this style using just a regular 3 strand braid (with the ribbon replacing one strand.)
Supplies Needed To Recreate This Hairstyle:
- 2 3ft (approx.) lengths of ribbon
- 1 small hair elastic
- temporary hair tie or clip
- scissors to trim the ribbon

Summer Hairstyles, Waterfall Ribbon Twist Rainbow Ponytail
A Colorful Woven Ribbon Design
I think this would be a great hairstyle for spring and summer 2014! We love ponytails and styles that keep your hair up and out of your face during warm weather. I can picture this hairstyle being worn for many summer activities. ;)
You may remember seeing the "waterfall ribbon twist braid ponytail" that we posted a few months ago (braided inside a ponytail.) Today's hairstyle is a variation of the waterfall ribbon twist, created in a rainbow pattern at the top of a ponytail... a homemade colorful ponytail holder!
"The Princess" commented that the finished design reminded her of the candy "Skittles" lined up in a vibrant rainbow in her hair. I have to agree! Of course... if you don't want to create a rainbow pattern, any color of ribbon would work. You could use all of the same color, or find combinations that match your outfit for the day. I think an ombre design would also be awesome!
This style might seem slightly familiar to some of you. We shared the photo below on our Instagram and Facebook accounts back in March as "the princess" actually wore this style for St. Patrick's Day this year! We had several requests for a tutorial and wanted to make sure and get it done for you.
As you can see, this technique should work for wavy hair as well as straight hair. A little curl or wave adds some cute dimension to the style.
- 2 small, clear elastics
- Ribbon, yarn, thread etc. (We used 6 colors total and the ribbon was cut into 3 ft lengths, 1/4 inch thick.)

Waterfall Twist Ribbon Braid - Ponytail Hairstyles
The Waterfall Twist Braid, Using Ribbon
Our hairstyle tutorial this week shows how to create a cute and easy waterfall twist braid (with ribbon) and 3 quick ponytail hairstyles using the braid. If you have made a waterfall twist braid before, this ribbon braid is created exactly the same way. But instead of using 2 strands of hair, 2 strands of ribbon are used in their place. To see the original waterfall twist braid click here: Waterfall Twist Braid Tutorial
In our first ponytail style (shown above) we have taken a single waterfall ribbon braid across the ponytail diagonally, ending in a bow.
Our second ponytail idea features 2 stacked braids running diagonally across the ponytail. This is probably my favorite of the 3 variations! Very simple, but different and cute.
Our 3rd ponytail (shown below) was made using a "carousel braiding technique." Meaning the braids are actually wrapping around the ponytail. You can watch it here carousel braid if you are needing help with this variation.
These quick ponytail ideas would be great for cheerleading, sports, school, gymnastics, dance, holidays, etc. Depending on the occasion or holiday, you could choose any color combinations you would like: Green and Red for Christmas, Red, White, and Blue for the 4th Of July, your school (or team) colors for cheerleading or sports, green or rainbow colors for St. Patrick's Day, etc.

St. Patrick's Day Hairstyles, Shamrock With Ribbon
2 Fun Hairstyles For St. Patrick's Day!
We have seen many cute and creative shamrock & clover hairstyles around the web throughout the years, & we actually created a 3 leaf clover hairstyle for our blog way back in 2009 (before we started doing YouTube videos.) But, we realized that we have never made a video tutorial showing a shamrock hairstyle. So, we decided to add one to our St. Patricks Hairstyle collection this year!
There are realistically only so many ways a clover hairstyle can be constructed. But, the idea and basic concept we used to form these "clover leaves" actually stemmed from a Valentine's "heart hairstyle" on our blog via 2009. And then, we wanted to add some color (green of course) so we incorporated some ribbon around the leaves using the candy stripe method. You could also choose to braid the ribbon into her hair instead if you prefer.
Sad, but true... "The Princess" is growing up and starting to move away from "little girl hairstyles." As you will see in our video tutorial (and photo below) we have also included a more "grown up" St. Patrick's Day ponytail style (for those of you who aren't too excited about sporting a clover on your head, but still want to join in on the fun and not get pinched.) ;)
Supplies Needed:
- 3 lengths of green ribbon (around 12 inches each)
- 2 large hair elastics and 3 small hair elastics (preferably green!) The brand we usually use is called "Goody Ouchless."
- 6 clips/barrettes/hair ties to temporarily keep the ribbon from unraveling while you are working.
St. Patty's Day Hairstyles, The Leprechaun Trap
Another Fun St. Patrick's Day Hairdo...
The Leprechaun Trap!
The Leprechaun Trap!
To create this style:
1. Make 4 braids along the front of her head and join them all together in the back with one elastic band.
2. Cut (3) 1-2 ft lengths of ribbon. Using a craft needle, sew the ribbons through 2 braids sitting next to each other in a criss cross pattern (the same way we have shown in other lacing hairstyles.) Repeat this process for the remaining braids.
3. Finish off the hairstyle by adding a bow or clover with the leftover ribbon.
There you have it... a lovely green web, perfect for catching a Leprechaun!
Spring Hairstyles, DIY Ribbon Flower And Clover
St. Patrick's Day Hairstyles - Ribbon Shamrock Hairstyle Ideas

Our video below shows how to create both a clover and a flower out of ribbon. This 4 leaf clover (or Shamrock) variation could be used to create a green shamrock headband (as shown above) or to add a shamrock to any hairstyle or braid. A french braid and fishtail braid are shown below as examples:

This is a very quick, easy (and cheap) way of making an accessory for any hairstyle. Best of all, there is no sewing or glue involved to create these flowers.... only ribbon!

DIY ribbon flower video tutorial:
We have found that thin ribbon seems to work best for making these flowers. We buy our ribbon at Walmart or various craft stores (it's usually less than $1 per spool.) The length of ribbon you will need depends on the hairstyle and the size/number of petals on your flower (plan on between 2-4 feet.) And, I think this probably goes without saying..... but, you'll want to be extremely careful not to cut any hair when you are trimming the ribbon at the end. ;)

Rainbow Bun - Dance Bun With Ribbon
Ballet Bun With Ribbon
Here's a cute and unique hairstyle variation on the standard Ballet Bun from the other day.

I thought this "Rainbow Bun" would be a cute hairstyle for a dance competition or recital. I could also see it working for gymnastics or even a Renaissance Fair.
