Pinwheel Bun Hairstyle Tutorial

A Fancy "Ballerina Bun"

Pinwheel Bun Tutorial princesshairstyles.com
Today's hair tutorial shows how to create a bun using a "bun maker or bun foundation" (which the Princess calls a hair donut.) As you can see, this bun is not your standard ballet bun, but much more unique and interesting!

The Princess has worn this bun several times since we filmed the tutorial, and each time has received many compliments and lots of attention.  I'm sure you will too! And, although this hairstyle looks quite intricate and difficult to create, it is actually very easy (which is always a plus.)

Supplies needed:

* 1 bun foundation, bun maker, hair donut, bun sock, or similar.  (There are many varieties of these available.) We purchased ours at Sally Beauty Supply and I remember it being around $3-$4.  I have also seen them at Walgreens and online at Amazon: Conair Bun Maker Set.  For us, it was worth purchasing because we actually use it quite often.  If you would rather not spend any money, you could always cut the toe out of a sock and roll it up to form the donut shape.  I would recommend finding something similar to the color of your hair.

* 1 elastic or hair tie

* several bobby pins

* medium length hair (or longer)

* gel or pomade (optional)

* approx 10 minutes

Pinwheel Bun Tutorial:
(Be sure to watch the Princess and her Dad in a fun video ending on this one lol.)

This twisted pinwheel bun (or chignon) would be great for many occasions: Dance recitals, ballet, figure skating, gymnastics, Prom, Homecoming, sports, work, or school.  Wouldn't this be a cute "Dance Moms" hairstyle?  To see a very simplified version of a perfect ballet bun, click here: ballet bun

P.S. When you take the bun out, you will be left with waves (as shown below) which make a cute second day style.  ;)

  2. That is so cute! How do you get it out, though? Just keep unwrapping it?

  3. Yep, after you unpin the end, it will unwrap quite easily.

  4. I am curious as to what you did with the front of her hair. I hate the way my daughters hair looks just slicked back into a ponytail

  8. This is AMAZING! I can't wait to try this for dance class on Saturday! We usually use a hairnet over her buns for dance for security & to control flyaways - would it look weird with this one?

  11. That's really pretty. Nice job. To help with the hair getting in the way, try starting at 8:00 instead of 12:00 (like on a clock face, not actual time.)

  12. I finally relent to leaving a comment thanks to your hubby. I am from Toronto, Ontario Canada and must have referred most of my friends up here to you. I have been following your blog for a year now and give you praise and thanks everytime someone stops me for my twins hair. It's all you. So thank you for great ideas, great videos and for the time/energy to keep posting. I was once a blogger but time became precious. Each entry you make, you are connecting people across the globe. Your daughter is beautiful. See you again. Senja

  17. Hi! I tried out this bun on my daughter this morning and it turned out gorgeous! Loved it and she got lots of great compliments. But... How do you take it out!?!? It partially fell out during tumbling class, but after nearly 10 minutes of trying unwrap it from every angle, I finally just cut the sock out of her hair.

    This is a great video. I am African American and my daughter has braids and it is so hard to get all her braids into a bun for her ballet performances. I am going to try this today and see how it works. I purchased the hot buns system and it doesn't work, we end up with half a bun and the sponge showing in the back so hopefully this won't be too complicated with all her braids. Thanks a million.
