Curling Iron Ringlets

Making Ringlet Curls Using A Curling Iron

We've had some questions regarding how we curl the princess's hair. And.... how we get the curls to stay in.

We actually use several different methods for curling:

Sometimes we braid her hair into cornrows while it's wet, then take the braids out (after the hair has dried) to make a crimped wavy look.

Sometimes we use our flat iron for waves and spirals. We have a video showing how to do that here: How to curl with a flat iron.

Sometimes we use curlers or rollers. I've found that this method seems to hold the curl the best and longest. And I like that no heat is used during the process, but it is time consuming to roll the hair and wait for it to dry.

Most of the time we use our regular old curling iron to make curls.

All of the curly hairstyles shown below were made using our curling iron with the technique shown in this video: (Which btw was taken before we got her hair cut.)

(Our twisty flower girl hairstyle, our basket weave hairstyle, and our Barbie hairstyle.)

And...Here's our "How To Curl Long Hair With A Curling Iron" video tutorial:

For getting the curls to stay in, I usually spray some hairspray on her hair before and after we curl it.... that's it!? Unfortunately I don't have any huge secrets. I think a lot of it has to do with hair texture. Some hair seems to hold curl well, and some just doesn't. You may try experimenting with different hair products if you're having trouble keeping curls in. And of course, if you have any secrets or suggestions for keeping "hard to curl" hair from falling out, please leave a comment under this post for us. You may help someone out! :)

  4. i have a tip when curling hard to curl hair....
use rag curlers! my hair is extremely resistant to curls so i was excited when i learned this just make sure its wet... you can wear the over night or during the day just wait till they are dry and take it out if needed lightly spray it but it should hold :)

  5. I agree with you. Some hair is just resistant to it. I have wavy hair, but it fights any curl I ever try to add. So now I straighten it. ;)

  6. I love your princess' hair! My princess has super fine hair and won't hold curl longer than an hour. But we sure have fun trying! Thanks for all the inspiration!

  7. I hardly ever use heat on mine or my girls' hair, but it has finally been cold enough (here in AZ)for us to leave our hair down, so I went to curl my hair, and my "old" iron broke too! Ironic, huh LOL Seriously, when I replace my iron, This will be great to try on Angel's long locks. Thanks!

  10. I have impossible hair. It has always been thin, & the only way I get any wave in it is to put it up in a ballerina bun (which is what it usually is in). When I was in high school, though, I used my mother's 1/4" barrel curling iron. Yeah, it's from the eighties (or maybe older), but it works the same as the ones now. I made sure to use VERY small sections of hair & non-aerosol hairspray. The first time i did it, it took 4 hours - but that was curls all the way to the roots when i was almost sitting on my hair. I tried a 1/2" barrel last year, but ended up with slight waves within 2 hours so I took it back the next day. Now i do it with my straightener (which was almost $200 but does any type of hair) & it holds in just fine. Ask friends, family, & neighbors what they use & if you can try their stuff to find the right way. Good luck!

  11. I think it's amazing that you spend so much time on your daughter's hair. I'm sure I spend about 10 minutes TOPS - and that's for 2 girls.

  12. I've been wanting to curl my daughter's hair for a long time - but as she's 2 1/2, I have to bribe her with M&M's! I wonder how many I'd go thru to get some gorgeous curls like that?!

  13. My daughter never lets me fix her hair. I love everything you do to your daughter's hair.

  14. this is soooo cute!! I don't think my dd would sit still that long but I will try!!

  15. So pretty! I will get brave and try to curl my daughter's hair one of these days. :-)

Do the curling irons damage their hair much? I know I have about killed my hair with my flat iron, so I was wondering what the heat would do to little girls' hair???

  16. My Grams just recommended that Generic stuff.

    Thanks for the tutorial!

  17. I wish I could get my 4-year-old to sit still for this, she has such long, pretty hair. But I can barely talk her into letting me throw it into a ponytail a lot of days... maybe down the road sometime she'll change her mind!

    Thanks for the great tips!

  18. Beautiful, really.

I would not have thought of doing the upper part of the strand the way you did, so thanks for sharing.

  19. I cannot WAIT until my daughters hair is long enough to do that!! Very pretty!

  20. I wish I could get my ringlets to stay in like yours. I lost my hairspray and my mum thinks my hair could burst into flames if I put hairspray in for school. I have to walk to the bus stop then take the bus so I think even if I do put hairspray in, the wind will wreck it. I live in Australia, where you don't know if it's going to pour rain or be boiling hot so I think this'll just be for church.

  21. Oh my goodness - those are PERFECT ringlets! I don't know that my daughter would have stayed still long enough for me to do this (and I don't know if mine would have turned out as good). It looks awesome!

  22. My daughter loves her hair in curls! The easiest for me is to braid it while wet...but I like the curling iron look so much better! :)

  23. oh, I can't wait until I can do that with my DD hair!

  24. Thanks. I've done ringlets with the girls, but I just don't use the hair spray.

  26. Hair texture does play a big part! My oldest daughter's hair has finally gotten thick enough to hold a curl, but my other girls hair is still too fine and thin and isn't worth the bother. They get sad when they see their older sister with curls, but I encourage them and let them know someday they'll be able to have curly hair too. :)

  27. My daughter and I both have coarse, thick hair that doesn't like to do ANYTHING but be sort of straight but sort of wavy. My daughter has long hair ( a good 14 inches past her shoulders ). I did the "Twist and Weave" hairstyle when she was a flower girl last summer except I only did the top and left the rest of her hair in curls. I used A LOT of hairspray then, but now I use Garnier Fructis Style Fiber Gum - extra strong. I use the extra strong because of how stubborn our hair is, but it works GREAT. I like to use pincurls. They take a little time, but are so worth it. I learned how to from YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6-3J6Lzit0 ) There's different ones, but this seems to be the most popular. I took smaller sections because of how long and think the hair is, but it also depends on how big or small you want the curl. They don't hurt to sleep on and they stayed in ALL DAY which has never happened in our hair before. I'm going to do the twist and weave again for her first pageant. It was so beautiful last time, even though it took me a couple tries ^_^

  29. Hiya,

    I love this hairstyle so much and was going to use it for a wedding next month;

The only problem is I have curly hair (not proper ringlets hence why I like this hairstyle)that is shoulder length.

Would this hairstyle still work? Or can you suggest another hairstyle for a wedding.

    Please Help

    Leah :D
