Formal Half Updo Hairstyle, Cascading Curls and Chains
We wanted to create a formal half up half down hairstyle for our tutorial this week. I'm sure many of you will be attending holiday parties, formal dances, recitals, concerts, church, winter weddings, Christmas celebrations, Hanukkah, New Years Eve (among other fancy schmancy events) this season. This fancy hairstyle would be perfect for many of these special occasions and is actually quite easy to recreate. Yay!
One of our all time favorite hairstyling techniques (and one of the very first posts we ever placed on this hair blog) is the "chain braid." It has been quite awhile since we have shown this technique in a hairstyle, so we wanted to add a chain to this elegant style today. The Princess always receives compliments when she is wearing chains (as they are quite unique looking.) I'm sure you will too!
As you can see, we placed a chain on just one side of this hairstyle and left the other side plain. If you prefer, you can add a chain to both sides.
Since the Princess doesn't have any bangs, we used the hair in the very front to create our headband made of hair.... which we refer to as "Barbie bangs." If your daughter has bangs (or fringe) cut, you can make the headband directly behind the bangs and it should work just fine.
And then of course, what would a half updo be without some cascading curls? We love the "princessy" look of this hairstyle and the glamorous volume created with these curls. Beyond the holidays, I could see this working for Prom, Homecoming, or maybe even a bride.
Supplies needed to recreate this style:
- 3 small elastics
- Several bobby pins
- Water, gel, or pomade to help control flyaways
- Curling iron or curling wand
I would plan on about 15 minutes to complete this pretty hairstyle (depending on how much of the hair you choose to curl.) As shown in our video below, we only curled the hair in the half ponytail, which did save some time.

A Cute Hairstyle Featuring Braids And Curls!
Who's in the mood for another fancy schmancy formal style? This half up hairstyle would be pretty not only for flower girls, but also for attending a wedding, prom, communion, recital, homecoming, Easter Sunday, baptism, church, or other special occasion. I love that this hair style is very feminine and "princess like" with old fashioned (vintage) flair.
In case you are wondering, the ringlet curls cascading underneath these 3 braided buns were made using a standard 1/2 inch curling iron. We have a curling tutorial showing this technique on YouTube at the following link: Curling Iron Tutorial. By the way, we receive requests for hairstyles that will work with naturally curly hair quite often and this one would be great!
We love cute braids styles which are so popular right now. The triple rosettes featured in this down do were created using standard braids and bobby pins (forming a braided crown of flowers around the back of her head.)
A top view of the style below..... As you can see, we parted her "bangs" on the side. Of course, if you prefer, you could part your hair in the middle.

Baptism Hairstyle Challenge
A good friend of mine has a daughter who will be getting baptised on April 10th. In our religion when someone is baptised, they go completely under the water (drenched from head to toe.) Usually this is followed by some kind of a family gathering and pictures.
My friend will only have a few minutes to do her daughter's hair while everyone is waiting and of course she wants her daughter to look and feel beautiful and special on this special day and for her baptism pictures.
My friend challenged me to come up with a quick and cute hairstyle for the baptism and I'm coming up with a whole lotta nothing spectacular!!
I did find these pictures I took one day after my daughter had gone swimming last summer. I just did this as an experiment to see how well french braid pigtails would hold up in the pool. This may work! Before she got in the pool the ends of the braids where down. Then when she got out I brought the ends up to the base with an elastic and just "fluffed" them a little.
As you can see, the braids don't look perfect after being in the water, but they held up pretty well! Maybe the best thing would be to braid her hair before she gets baptised and hope for the best??
Anyway, since I pretty much sucked at this challenge, I'm passing it on to all of YOU! :) If anyone wants to take it on, here's the "rules."

2. It needs to either be something that can be done before the baptism and hold up to going under water or...
3. It's got to be quick (5 minutes or less.)
4. Remember, we're working with dripping wet hair here and no time for curling irons or blow dryers.
5. Post your ideas to our facebook page (she can see them there) or send them to me in email before April 9th and I'll add them to this post (princesshairstyles at gmail dot com.) I'm sure she'll appreciate any ideas you can give her!

This next one is cute and we've even got step by step pictures! The person who sent in this idea says you could either leave the hair down (with the braids tied together in the back) for the baptism and then add the bun after. Or do the whole hairstyle before the baptism. My guess would be that it would work either way and hold up just fine.
