Zig Zag Woven Braid Tutorial

Zig Zag woven braid. Half up or full ponytail hairstyle.

Our hair tutorial this week features a beautiful woven braid that is so easy to create!  We saw this technique a few months ago on Facebook and fell in love with how simple and gorgeous it is. This braid could be worn for both casual and formal occasions, and so many different styles could be created by using this concept.  As shown in our photos (above) you could make a half up style or a full braided ponytail.  Or, you could start by using this technique to form a half-up and finish off the rest of the hair into a gorgeous updo or bun.  We have another variation that we filmed coming next week with my daughter that I'm sure you will love, so watch for that!

As shown in our video, depending on how close together you place the elastics while forming this braid, you will have a completely different outcome.  You can decide if you like the elastics showing a little bit (or not) but I think both looks are very cute!

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • Plenty of small hair elastics.  We used "Goody Ouchless" brand (affiliate) in the smallest size they sell. The amount is going to depend on how far down you go with the braid and the size of sections you take.
  • 1 medium size elastic or hair tie for the bottom of the braid (if you are braiding the full ponytail.)
  • Pomade, gel, finishing hairspray, etc.  (Optional.)
This braid should work with long hair, medium hair, straight, wavy, or curly. To make things easier on yourself, I would recommend cutting the elastics out when you take this style down (rather than unwinding each one.) A seam ripper or nail clippers work really well and make the job painless and quick.
