Double Braided Edgy Ponytail Hairstyle

Back To School Hairstyles, Part 1

Back to school edgy ponytail #hairstyle tutorial
Today we are starting a fun "back to school hairstyles" video series!  Over the next month or so, we will be posting several quick and easy hairstyle ideas that will be great for school mornings.

We are calling today's hairstyle the "double braided edgy ponytail." This style may look slightly familiar to some of you, as this is kind of similar to the "gymnastics ponytail" we posted about a year ago. But for this style... no French braiding is required.  Hooray for quick and simple!

Double Braids Edgy Ponytail #Hairstyle Tutorial

Hair styles with volume on top and the sides slicked back seem to be quite popular right now.... almost a faux hawk look.  If you have extra time in the morning, you could cornrow or twist the sides of her head to get that slicked back look (instead of using simple braids like we have here.) Such a trendy style!

You might have noticed her bangs (or fringe) area.  We have always called this a "hair puff" but have also heard "hair quiff," "pompadour" or "hair poof." Whatever you like to call it, we think it is super cute and stylish (and really adds some edginess to any style.) In the video below, we show how to make these puffy bangs without having to rat or tease your hair.

Supplies needed:
  • 2-3 bobby pins
  • 3 clear hair elastics
  • Comb
  • 4 cloth covered ponytail holders to hold the braids while you work

Back To School Clothes

This past weekend at our house was spent going back to school shopping, which has been fun... but also exhausting!  I'm sure those of you with school aged kids know what I mean.

The weekend before our big shopping trip, we cleaned out everyone's closets. We have 3 children (the princess and 2 boys) in our family, and can you believe between the 3 of them, not one pair of pants fits anyone?  Each child has grown a couple of inches over the summer!

Back to having 3 kids..... we wanted to find some cute/fashionable but inexpensive clothes. As you are all well aware of, back to school fees/school supplies/shoes/lunches/backpacks/clothing/etc. all add up fast.  So, we are shopping on a budget here!

Please enjoy a short hiatus from hairstyling with a fun "back to school fashion / clothing haul / look book video" featuring "the princess" and her new school clothes:

I have to say, shopping for a girl is more fun than shopping for a boy (just my opinion) but also more expensive.  My boys are happy with 1 pair of shoes, some basic jeans, basketball shorts, and t-shirts.  Girls are a bit... more tricky.  ;)

The clothes featured in our video were purchased from the following stores:

TJ Maxx
Ross
GAP
Kmart
Target

PS:  We have a couple of cute back to school hairstyles filmed and ready to go.  Watch for them in the very near future!

Tucked Fishtail Braids Updo Hairstyle

An Elegant And Simple Updo

Braided Updo Video Tutorial

If you are looking for an easy updo for an upcoming formal event, this style would be great.  No french braiding or anything too complicated is involved here.  We love the vintage / old fashioned look of these "tucked braids."

I'm thinking with the right dress, this would be a gorgeous wedding updo, flower girl hairstyle, or prom hairstyle!  And of course, this style can be accessorized however you want (to make it look more or less casual or fancy.) For a more textured look (which is so trendy right now) you could curl the top layer of your hair before you create this style.  This would also be an updo that would work great with naturally curly hair.

This formal hairstyle is actually a remake of a style we originally posted on our "hair blog" back in 2009.  I've been trying to go back through our older hair styles and adding to our (long) list, the ones that you guys have requested videos for.  It's a slow process, so thank you for being patient with us!

Supplies needed:
  • 1 covered hair tie (for the ponytail) and one small clear elastic to tie off the braids.
  • 1 topsy tail (optional.)  These can be found online here.
  • A couple of bobby pins.
  • A bow, flower, or other accessory to place at the top of the braids (optional.)  We found our rose "bendini clip" at our local Walgreens.

For a more casual option, you could leave the fishtail braids down in a ponytail as shown below.  We opted to stretch our braids out and deconstruct them a bit for more of a "messy" look. But of course, if you like things neater, you can leave the braids more intact. I think this would be a cute beach style.  The Princess actually wore this style swimming the other day!

And one more option.... A stylish headband or scarf could be added to this hairstyle instead of placing a flower or bow above the braids.

How To French Braid

A Step By Step French Braid Video Tutorial

How To French Braid Video
Awhile ago, we put out a "how to do a french braid" for beginners video (which basically showed the mechanics of how a french braid is made.)  I'm hoping today's tutorial will help show how to hold the strands while you are french braiding hair.

Keep in mind that there really is no "right or wrong" way to hold the strands in your hands.  Whatever works for you to get the job done is just fine.  I actually have learned 2 different ways of holding the strands that I like to use while french braiding and switch things up often, but I believe the technique shown in our video below is the easiest to learn.

I realize that learning to french braid can be frustrating, and it is going to take some practice. The more you practice, the easier it will become.  Soon, you will be braiding in your sleep!  ;)  When you are first starting out, you might try having someone help you  rewind the first part of the video over and over for you as you are braiding, until you get the hand positioning down.  I really tried to go slowly and break down each step of the plaiting in this video, and hopefully it will help someone. If you already know how to braid, this tutorial will most likely drive you nuts, lol.  I find this a hard thing to teach!

After you have mastered this braid, here are a few cute french braids hairstyles to try:

Diagonal French Braid With A Cute Flower Accent!

Quite often the Princess will wear a diagonal French Braid (or Dutch Braid) swept across the back of her head, connected to a braid on the other side (ending in a side ponytail, bun, or braid.)  We have found this "go to hairstyle" great for most occasions (including dance, gymnastics, and other sports, since it is quick and holds her hair in place well.)

For something a little different, we decided to take this classic style and add a feminine touch! We are both loving this look with an added braid rosette.  This cute hairstyle really doesn't take much longer than the standard 2 braid version, but looks so pretty and unique with an added rose!

Diagonal French Braid With Braided Rose

We've kind of been on a hair flower kick at our house lately. We just love these braided flowers, especially for spring and summer hairstyles!  If you love this look as much a we do, feel free to check out a few styles using flowers made from hair we have done in the past: The Braided Flower Updo, Half Up Rosette Buns and the Winding Lace Braid With Rosette Accent. I think adding a rosette to any style gives it sort of a vintage, romantic look.

Textured and "messy" looking hairstyles are very trendy right now.  For a more textured looking flower, the outside strands of the braid can be stretched before you pin the flower up.  We chose not to do that this time, but our "braided flower updo" (linked above) shows this technique if you prefer a more disheveled looking flower. This style can also be done on wavy or curly hair for a more textured or beachy look.

Supplies needed:
  • 2 small elastics (preferably clear or matched to your hair color)
  • several bobby pins
  • comb or brush
  • temporary hair tie or clip for keeping the hair you aren't braiding out of your way

We chose French braids this time, but of course, you could use Dutch Braids if you prefer (or any other kind of braid for that matter!) As long as you know how to French braid, this style is actually quite easy and quick.

*Bobby Pinning Tips:

We have had a few emails from some of you who have had problems with bobby pins while trying to pin your flowers.  I think the main thing to consider is that quality really does make a difference when you are choosing your pins.  I am a frugal person and will skimp on most things, but when it comes to bobby pins, I am willing to pay a little more.  We purchase ours at "Sally Beauty Supply" and the ones we buy come in a little tin case (I believe the brand is actually Sally Beauty Supply's own.)  They have standard size pins and miniature pins.  We use the miniature ones most often.  I have noticed that if we buy "good quality" bobby pins, they will last for a long time and hold the hair tighter.  The cheapy ones seem to only be good for one use, and will come out easily.  Also, I have found that most of the time if I am having trouble pinning something, it is because I am trying to pin too much hair at once.  You really don't need to pin down very much hair at all for things to hold, and usually just a small piece at the edge of whatever you are tacking down will work great.  Crossing one pin over another is also a "trick" to help lock things into place.  Hope that helps!

Hope you enjoyed yet another braided hairstyle!  Feel free to share it by using the buttons below.  ;)
