This hairstyle tutorial is inspired by 2 similar photos we saw on Instagram by these awesome hair accounts:

To create these "3 strand infinity braids" or "figure 8 braids" we have taken a length of ribbon and woven it around 3 strands of hair.  You can make these braids with as many sections of hair as you would like.  The more strands you add, the thicker and more intricate the braids will be.  These 2 ribbon braids were then loosely twisted around each other to create a fun pop of color and accent on the side of her hair.

We used red and white ribbon, since we were going for a patriotic 4th of July hairstyle look.  If you have time to add a 3rd braid with blue ribbon, you could braid the red, white, and blue braids together, which would look amazing! Of course, this doesn't have to be just a 4th of July hairstyle. You can use any color of ribbons that you would like, and if you don't live in the U.S. you could substitute the ribbon for your own country's colors! This hairstyle would be great for many special occasions including holidays, team sports and activities, school pride day, etc.

Cute ribbon hairstyle for the 4th of July.

We actually have an old tutorial showing a 2 strand version of this braid, which was one of our first (and quite honestly cringeworthy) videos made on this blog over 7 years ago! Also from our 2011 archives, we have a 3 strand ribbon ponytail using this same braiding technique if you want to check that one out.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Ribbon.  About quadruple the length of each braid you are intending to make.
  • Small elastics to tie off your braids.
As mentioned in our video, although these braids look fabulous... they are quite time consuming.  I would plan on about 10 minutes per braid (depending on how long your are making the braid and how many strands you use, etc.)  I think the end result is worth the time and effort, although I would probably save this one for special occasions!
