Jasmine Hair

Princess Jasmine Hairstyle
Inspired by Disney's Aladdin
Jasmin hair

This Princess Jasmine hair style is inspired by the "puffy ponytail" as seen in the Disney movie, live plays, and books on Jasmine from Aladdin.  This isn't meant to be an exact replica of the original hairstyle, of course...but rather our take on it. Cartoon hairstyles can be difficult to recreate on real hair sometimes!

Princess Jasmin Hair
As you can see, right now the Princess has fairly long hair (like Jasmine) which worked out well for this hairstyle.  You could definitely create a similar look with shorter hair though.  I actually had our "short hair girls" in mind when we were re-creating this hairdo!  You may have noticed on the original style, the "puffs" in the ponytail actually start down lower on her head (at the top of the ponytail itself.)  We placed our elastics up higher on her head. So, if you don't have as much length to work with, you can still get a few "puffs" in before you run out of hair.  ;)

We wanted to keep this hair style simple and quick.  But, if you have the time and you like to braid....In the hairstyle pictures below is a more intricate Jasmine hair variation, as another option. We braided the ribbon headband into the style using a 4 strand pleated ribbon braid across the top of her head for this variation.

Aladdin Hairstyle
Braided Headband, Jasmine Hairstyle
The main reason we decided to make a Jasmine hair tutorial this week is that we recently attended a live performance of Disney's Aladdin and the Princess was very excited to wear a Disney Princess Hairstyle to the musical!

To complete this hairstyle you will need:
  • A ribbon, headband, or scarf.
  • Several small elastics (the amount will depend on the length of your hair, we used 9 total.)  The brand we used is "Goody Ouchless."
  • 5-10 minutes.
  • Love for Disney Princesses!

Jasmine Hair Tutorial:

This would be a very cute hairstyle to wear if you are planning on going to Disneyland, Disney World, or an Aladdin show. This would also be a great addition to a costume if you are dressing up as Jasmine or a genie for Halloween or other occasion!

If you are into the Disney Princess thing, we have done a few other Disney inspired hairstyles in the past which can be found here:

Waterfall Fishtail Braid

How To Make Waterfall Braids, With a Fishtail Twist!
The "Waterfall Fishtail Braid"

waterfall braiding
We love the ever popular waterfall braid and have enjoyed experimenting with it. Waterfall braids are very trendy right now and seem to be the "in" hairstyles for 2012, along with many other braided hairdos. We have done a "waterfall twist braid" along with several variations of the standard 3 strand waterfall braids in the past and wondered if it would be possible to make a waterfall fishtail braid (or waterfall fishbone braid as some may call it.) Yes.... as you can see, it is possible and we actually love how this braid turned out!

The Princess has been wearing this pretty braid in many braids styles over the past few weeks. We have tried one long diagonal braid across the back of her head, 2 small waterfall fishtails on each side (joined in the middle) a double fishtail braid stacked on top of each other, and even a fishtail waterfall braid updo!  The braided hairstyles you can create using this technique really are endless!

This hairstyle should work great for long hair, medium hair, even shoulder length hair. If you prefer more of a messy, relaxed hairstyle, you can definitely stretch the strands of the braid as shown at the end of our video.

The Princess doesn't wear her long, straight hair down very often because it tends to get tangled quite easily, especially when it's windy out.  We usually save hairstyles like this for occasions such as church or low activity/indoor days. Of course, this style could easily be pulled into a ponytail or bun if needed.

There are a few ways this braid can be created (including using a topsy tail, the same way we have shown here: Topsy Tail Waterfall Braid.) But, after experimenting a bit, the technique we used in this video seemed to turn out the best for us in the end.

Hope you enjoy this unique braid!

Basket Weave Braid Woven Bun Hairstyle

The "Woven Bun"
A Basket Weaving Braided Updo
basket woven bun

This "woven bun" updo hairstyle is basically a combination of our basket weave half ponytail hairstyle and our never ending braid hairstyle. This intricate and unique braided bun updo would be a great hair style for a special occasion if you are needing something fancy schmancy.  I'm thinking: Wedding, ballet, figure skating, Prom, Homecoming, flower girl, Easter Sunday, etc.

To complete this hairstyle, you will need:
  • 2 small elastics
  • Several bobby pins
  • Fairly long hair
  • 10-15 minutes
  • A design weaver, topsy tail, craft needle, or your fingers! (We found our design weaver online.)

braided updo
If you prefer more of a messy look, you could definitely stretch the strands in the braid before you wrap the hair into a bun.  I was thinking it would be a very cute hairstyle if you made a braided flower out of the bun at the end!

This updo is designed as a long hairstyle, or a hairstyle for long hair.  But, if your hair is on the shorter side, you could probably still create most of the style.  I would recommend ending the braid at the base of the ponytail and creating a bun from there.  (This will make more sense after you watch our video tutorial below.)

This last hairstyle photo was taken at the end of the day.  I was quite surprised at how well this one held up, so I wanted to share!  As long as the bun is secured tightly, you could probably use this as a hairstyle for a dance competition or performance.  Maybe even a gymnastics hairstyle!  I can picture the little girls on the show Dance Moms wearing this hairstyle.  How cute would that be!?

This is one of our favorite hairdos lately as it looks so intricate but really isn't that hard or time consuming to complete.

Spring Rings, Unique Hairstyles

Hair Coils, or "Spring Rings"
Cool Hairstyles

cool hairstyles
I realize this unique hairstyling technique is probably not for everyone (as it is quite different) but my daughter absolutely loves it!   We first saw these "spring rings" at a Renaissance Faire a few years ago and have been wanting to try and recreate them ever since.  The lady we saw at the Faire had an elaborate updo with little hair coils popping out all over. It was a very cool hair style and very memorable!
long curly hair with hair coils
We opted to try these spring rings with a quick half up hairstyle and some loose curls made with our curling wand (or clipless curling iron.)  We show how to use the curling wand on this fishtail braid hairstyle video if you are wondering.
hair coils

The day she wore this hairstyle, several people stopped to ask "The Princess" if these coils were actually her hair... or a hair accessory!  I actually had some crocheted spiral hair accessories made from yarn when I was a little girl that looked kind of similar to these coils!  Do any of you remember those??

snail shell hairstyle
These "spring rings" (or hair coils) can be incorporated into so many different hairstyle designs. You could place the coils within a braid, wrap them around the top of a ponytail, make them into a netted design, add a few accent springs to any hairstyle, or even place them all over the head!  In the photo above, we chose to twist the coils around into "snail shells" or "hair flowers."
side ponytail hairstyle with ringlets
When you take the springs out, you will be left with some crazy spiral ringlets!  The princess has quite long hair, and these curls were so tight, they shrunk up to above her shoulders!  We ended up stretching the ringlets out a little bit and incorporated them into a side ponytail hairstyle the next day.  You will see what I mean if you try this, but these coils made the tightest, most defined (strangest) curls I have ever seen!  It almost reminded me of curly doll hair.  You could make some very cute hairstyles with these ringlets.  And a little warning:  I would not recommend trying to comb these out or you will have a very frizzy mess!

The Spring Rings Hair Tutorial:

This technique we used to create these coils is similar to the technique used in creating "slide up braids" or "snake braids" which are quite a popular hair trend using a 3 strand braid. These hair coils use 2 strands. The key to not getting flyaways as you slide the coil up, is all in the way you make the rope braid in the beginning. It is very important to twist the strands (as shown in our video tutorial) while you are creating the braid, or this will not work.
