4th Of July Hairstyle, Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist

4th of July Hairstyle Tutorial. Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist. #fourthofjuly

A cute and patriotic hairstyle for the fourth of July! These twisted ribbon infinity braids look so cool, I'm sure you will get lots of compliments!! This hairstyle would be great for a 4th of July parade, watching fireworks, a barbecue, or any other fun festivities your family participates in as you celebrate independence day.

Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist, 4th of July Hairstyle Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

This hairstyle tutorial is inspired by 2 similar photos we saw on Instagram by these awesome hair accounts:
@flower.braids and @tojashair

To create these "3 strand infinity braids" or "figure 8 braids" we have taken a length of ribbon and woven it around 3 strands of hair.  You can make these braids with as many sections of hair as you would like.  The more strands you add, the thicker and more intricate the braids will be.  These 2 ribbon braids were then loosely twisted around each other to create a fun pop of color and accent on the side of her hair.

We used red and white ribbon, since we were going for a patriotic 4th of July hairstyle look.  If you have time to add a 3rd braid with blue ribbon, you could braid the red, white, and blue braids together, which would look amazing! Of course, this doesn't have to be just a 4th of July hairstyle. You can use any color of ribbons that you would like, and if you don't live in the U.S. you could substitute the ribbon for your own country's colors! This hairstyle would be great for many special occasions including holidays, team sports and activities, school pride day, etc.

Cute ribbon hairstyle for the 4th of July.

4th of July hairstyle tutorial. #4thofjuly

We actually have an old tutorial showing a 2 strand version of this braid, which was one of our first (and quite honestly cringeworthy) videos made on this blog over 7 years ago! Also from our 2011 archives, we have a 3 strand ribbon ponytail using this same braiding technique if you want to check that one out.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Ribbon.  About quadruple the length of each braid you are intending to make.
  • Small elastics to tie off your braids.
As mentioned in our video, although these braids look fabulous... they are quite time consuming.  I would plan on about 10 minutes per braid (depending on how long your are making the braid and how many strands you use, etc.)  I think the end result is worth the time and effort, although I would probably save this one for special occasions!

If you are looking for more 4th of July hair ideas, check out our 4th of July playlist on YouTube.  Including star hairstyles and more red, white, and blue hairstyles!

The Best Hair Wrapped Ponytail Tutorial

The best hair wrapped ponytail, video tutorial

A "fool proof" and unique method to achieve the perfect hair wrapped ponytail. (No Bobby Pins required!)

Hey guys! We all love a cute and classic ponytail. And a popular, trendy, and well known "trick" of wrapping hair around the top of the ponytail makes it a much more polished and finished looking hairstyle.  This simple technique can take an otherwise lazy or casual ponytail into being fancy enough to wear to a red carpet event, a prom, or a wedding!  But, how many of us struggle with wrapping the hair around the ponytail and then getting it to stay?  Maybe it is just us, but we don't love the "bobby pin method" as it never holds all of the ends tucked in, the pins end up sliding out... and it can hurt.  We have also tried several methods using elastics and topsy tails, but none of them have worked perfectly for us and it usually ends up being a struggle (which kind of defeats the purpose of a seemingly effortless look.) We actually came across the method shown in our hair tutorial (below) when we filmed our "unicorn hairstyle" a few months ago.  But, I'm guessing if you are wanting to do a simple hair wrapped ponytail, you most likely wouldn't think to look for instructions by way of a unicorn hairstyle video lol, so we wanted to make this separate tutorial for you today.

Easy Hair Wrapped Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We added a small french braid with the front/top section of her hair before adding it in to the ponytail. We also share a fun "hair hack" by pushing forward on the braid to create extra volume for more of a faux hawk look.  (You will want to make your braid slightly loose for optimal results with this hack.)  The french braid is optional and we do have a french braiding tutorial if you don't know how to do that. You could also bring her bangs straight back of you wanted, or you could add a pompadour in the front instead if you prefer.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 1 medium size hair tie (large enough to contain all of your hair.)
  • 1 small, clear elastic.
  • 1 medium size clear elastic (if you are adding the french braid to the ponytail.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, finishing hairspray, etc.
This hairstyle should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, curly hair, and wavy hair.

Spindle Top Ponytail Tutorial

Spindle top ponytail hair tutorial. Quick and easy hairstyle.

A quick and easy hairstyle, perfect for school mornings!

Ponytails are a great DIY "go to" style and we all love how effortless and quick they are to make.  But, if you get tired of wearing the same old thing, this quick trick adds some extra uniqueness to the classic style and changes things up a bit.

Besides being fast and simple to create, the other awesome thing about ponytails is that they can be worn for casual or formal occasions.  This "spindle top ponytail" would be great for sports (soccer, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, etc.) to the gym, for school, work, church, or even to a prom or homecoming dance.

Spindle Top Ponytail, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Quick hairstyle for school. Spindle top ponytail tutorial.

This cute hairstyle could also be worn as a half up ponytail if you prefer and should work with most hair types and textures: Long hair, medium length hair, and even fairly short hair.... curly, wavy, or straight.  If your hair is on the shorter side, I would recommend using several sections of hair to make the loops instead of one continuous strand.

Pictured below is another option, showing how this ponytail could be worn without stretching the hair out.  I think this variation looks pretty cool, sort of like a ponytail holder made out of hair!

Simple and fast hairstyle tutorial. Spindle top ponytail.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size hair tie, preferably stretchy "cloth like" material (rather than elastic.)
  • Topsy tail. (As mentioned in our video, if you don't have a topsy tail you can wrap the sections around the hair tie by using just your fingers. But, we have found that the topsy tail does make things easier.) These can be found online here:  Topsy Tail link  (affiliate) or in some stores where beauty supplies are sold.

Umbrella Lace Hairstyle Tutorial

Umbrella lace hair tutorial

This week we have combined a pompadour, some regular braids, and a unique knotting technique to create this cute half-up hairstyle and design, which we think resembles a fancy lacy umbrella!  This fun hairstyle would be great for school, church, recitals, communions, weddings, special occasions, etc.

The overall shape and concept of this hairstyle is similar to a few of our past favorites, which we have shown on our blog previously.... the "arrowhead braid" and the "fairy wings braid."

Umbrella Lace Hairstyle, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Cute braided hairstyle, "umbrella lace."

Knots and braids hairstyle, umbrella lace.

This hairstyle is actually quite easy to create, but as shown in our tutorial (and depending on the texture of your hair) you will probably need to add some water, gel, pomade, or other product before making the knots (to help control flyaways and keep things looking neat and smooth.)  We noticed as this style dries, the design really "pops" and looks so beautiful!  She received tons of compliments the day she wore this hairstyle.  I'm sure you will too!

Gorgeous hairstyle for school, umbrella lace video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 3 small, clear elastics.
  • Water, gel, or pomade, to help control frizz and flyaways.
  • Finishing hairspray.
P.S. If you would rather not wear your hair down, you could definitely add a braid, ponytail, or bun with the remaining hair to keep everything up and out of your way.

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid, Hairstyle On People Magazine Cover

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid Tutorial

*We took a "photo of the photo" on the right from a magazine cover. Original credit to People Magazine.

A few weeks ago (while standing in line at the grocery store) I noticed this hairstyle worn by Nicole Brown Simpson, on the cover of People Magazine.  Of course, it immediately caught my eye as it is a beautiful braid. And although the photo must be at least 20 years old (since she passed away in 1994) this is a braid that I don't think I have never seen before! Apparently I was not the only one to notice this unique looking braid because over the past several weeks, we have had over 10 requests for a tutorial from fellow braiding enthusiasts!

After studying the photo and trying several different methods of recreating the braid on our mannequin, I could not choose between 2 techniques... so I am showing you both of those in our video today.

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Keep in mind... Of course, I have no idea how this braid was actually created on Nicole (I wasn't there.)  ;) This is just our interpretation with a similar looking outcome. Our first technique I think looks most similar to the original braid. If you take smaller sections than what I show in our tutorial (above) and keep the braid tighter, you should have an almost identical match to Nicole's braid.

Nicole Brown Simpson inspired hairstyle tutorial

The 2nd technique shown in our video is not new.  It is one that I remember seeing awhile ago on a Russian YouTube account: "Русский."  This braid looks very similar as well.... but not quite the same. On Nicole,  the hair in the middle is laying straight all the way down, where on this braid you can see a slight twist between the sections. But as shown in our tutorial, this braid is easier to take out when you are done, so it may be the way to go!
Braid from People Magazine

Tutorial for braid seen on Nicole brown Simpson on People Magazine cover

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 small, clear elastic to hold the braid at the end.
  • Gel, pomade, or water to help control flyaways.
  • Finishing hairspray.
P.S. We always get questions about where we got our mannequin head.  We found it on Amazon. (Affiliate) The one we purchased is synthetic hair because I didn't want to spend a lot on it. Although if you are looking for better quality, human hair is the way to go.

Pinwheel Bun Shortcut Tutorial

Pinwheel bun shortcut hair tutorial. Quick and easy!

Today we are showing a quick and easy "hack" for creating one of our all time favorite hairstyles, the "pinwheel bun." My daughter loves to wear the pinwheel bun to dance class and occasionally to school or church. But, the one complaint we have with our original method is that it can be quite time consuming.  Not to mention, it is a bit of a hassle to take the bun down when you are done wearing it.  This new variation (shown in our video today) is quick, easy, and comes out effortlessly when you are done.

The idea for this "shortcut" came to us a few months ago when my daughter had a dance competition and we were using "the perfect bun" to make her standard performance hairstyle (shown in our latest tutorial.) We wondered how the bun would turn out if we braided her hair first, and loved that the end result looked almost identical to a braided variation of the pinwheel bun (also known as the "bun of braids.")

Easy updo tutorial. Pinwheel bun shortcut.

Of course, there are several variations of the pinwheel that can be created using this technique.  If you want the bun to be more of a twisted texture (like the original) I would suggest utilizing twist braids (or rope braids) instead of standard 3 strand braids in your ponytail.  You could really do any type of braids you want for many different options and variations of this updo.

Pinwheel Bun Shortcut Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As mentioned in our video, the number of braids you will need to cover the bun foundation is going to depend on your specific hair texture and length.  The longer your hair is, the more times the braids will be wrapping around the foundation to provide more coverage.... so you will need less.  And obviously, thicker hair is going to cover more of the surface area, which means less braids will be needed as well.  If your hair is on the thinner side, I would suggest stretching the braids out before you wrap them up to help cover more area.  Also, if you find a "perfect bun maker" close to the color of hair you are working with, it's not going to matter as much if some of it shows through.

Supplies needed to recreate this bun:
  • 2 ponytail holders or hair elastics
  • Alligator clip or temporary hair ties to keep the braids from unraveling while you work.
  • Several bobby pins
  • A bun foundation as shown in our video. The one we used is called "the perfect bun" and can be found online or in stores. (affiliate.)
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)

This bun would be a great hairstyle for dance, gymnastics, ballet, figure skating and sports, or for formal events such as prom, homecoming, weddings, holidays, and church.

Halloween Hairstyles, Queen Elinor Hair

Halloween hairstyle. Brave ponytail tutorial. Merida's mom Queen Elinor hair.

We are continuing on with our "Halloween Hairstyles series" this week with a fun Queen Elinor inspired ribbon wrapped ponytail (as seen in the Disney movie "Brave" on Merida's mother.)

We noticed Queen Elinor actually wears 2 variations of this hairstyle in the movie; The first, as a single ponytail (which we chose for our tutorial today.) And the other is basically the same concept, only doubled up in 2 ribbon ponytails (or pigtails) laying side by side.  I think both styles are gorgeous and perfect to go with a variety of medieval, princess, queen or royal costumes.

We are loving the effortless look of this ponytail and would actually consider wearing it on regular occasions (such as school) and not just for dressing up.

Halloween hairstyle idea. Disney's Brave ponytail tutorial.

Depending on the thickness of your hair, you may want to tease it slightly to add more volume... or you can choose to skip that step and leave it "as is." We love the "bubbled" look of the ponytail, which was made by stretching the hair between the ribbon (shown in our video tutorial below.) But, this step can also be skipped if you prefer your ponytail to lay more straight and sleek.

Queen Elinor hairstyle tutorial and costume idea

Queen Elinor Hairstyle Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Supplies needed to recreate this style:
  • 1 ponytail holder or large elastic.
  • 1 medium, clear elastic or small ponytail holder.
  • We chose some gold ribbon for wrapping around our ponytail.  You can use whatever you have on hand (leather, yarn, rope, ribbon, etc.)
  • We also added a gold braided headband accessory to accent the style.  Queen Elinor of course was wearing a gold crown if you really want your costume to be authentic. ;)
  • An Elinor costume to go with your hairstyle (optional of course.) We found the dress shown in our photos at a local store in the Halloween section.... and it wasn't actually meant to be a Queen Elinor costume.

Micro Braid Lattice Wrap Hairstyle

Micro braid lattice wrap hairstyle video tutorial

This braid is inspired by a photo we saw a couple of years ago on Pinterest and tracked it down to an awesome account on Instagram called @haartraum. We thought this braid was very cute and "princess like" and hope you like it too!

I think this would be a lovely hairstyle for school, sports, work, or other casual occasions.  I love the delicate and subtle accent micro braids wrapping around the sides of the french braid (which add a lot of interest and style with an almost lattice looking pattern) to an otherwise ordinary and standard braid.

Cute and easy braiding tutorial, micro braid lattice wrap

Of course, you can use any type of micro braids to accent your main braid (rope braids, fishtail braids, etc.) I really love how the regular 3 strand braids look in this particular style though, they really pop! Also, if you prefer Dutch braiding over French braiding, you can go that route instead for another variation.  Or you can skip all of that and just start with a regular braided ponytail or low side braid (or center braid) if you desire.

Micro Braid Lattice Wrap Hairstyle Video Tutorial: Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

This hairstyle is fairly quick and easy to create, which we all love on school mornings. As shown in our video tutorial (above) the braids can be threaded through quite easily using just your fingers.... but if you have a topsy tail, it might make things even easier.  I would recommend starting with wet hair, or use some gel or pomade to help avoid flyaways if you are threading the braids by hand.  I suppose you could add the micro braids in as you are braiding the main French braid if you want to skip the threading part altogether, but this would make the braiding a little more complicated.  ;)

Princess hairstyles, Cute micro braid and french braid tutorial

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • 2 small clear elastics
  • 1 medium clear elastic or hair tie
  • Water, gel, or pomade to help control flyaways
  • Topsy Tail (optional)
This hairstyle will work best on long hair or medium length hair.

Fishtail Wrap Braid Ponytail Hairstyle

Cute hairstyle idea. Fishtail wrap braid tutorial.

Our hair tutorial this week, the "fishtail wrap braid" ponytail hairstyle would be great for school, sports, work, and other casual or every day occasions.  If you already know how to create a standard fishtail braid, this variation should be very easy for you!  We love that this braid is unique, but still quite easy and quick.  Something a little bit different than a regular fishtail.

If you like your braids to appear thicker and more "messy" looking (which is so fashionable and trendy right now) feel free to stretch the sides of your fishtail braid and deconstruct it to your liking before you wrap it up.  "The Princess" wanted her hair more sleek and tight the day we filmed this because she was practicing gymnastics / tumbling and didn't want the braid to fall apart.

This hairstyle should work with straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair, medium length and long hair.  If you have shorter hair, you might try creating this braid in a half up style, which would give you more length to work with.

fishtail wrap braid ponytail tutorial

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • Several small elastics.  (The amount will depend on the length of hair you are working with.) We choose blue elastics to accent our braid.  Of course, you can use any color you want.  Or, you can use clear elastics if you want more of a sophisticated look.  The brand of tiny elastics we used in this tutorial is called "Goody Ouchless."
  • 2 medium size hair ties (one for the top and bottom of the braid.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair spray, etc. (Optional.)
