Bow Tie Braid, Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial.

You'll love this adorable braided hairstyle with bows made from hair!  This hairstyle would be great for school, recitals, weddings, flower girls, church, communions, and other special occasions.

This hair tutorial and basic concept was inspired by a photo we saw on an awesome Instagram account by @mylittlebraids. We thought the lace braids and feathered strands were so delicate and beautiful, we had to give it a try!  The elastic bows sitting centered between the 2 lace French braids look a lot like little "bow ties" to us.  So cute!  If you like this hairstyle, you may want to check out our "fishtail bow braid" from a few years ago which is also a very cute style using hair to make bow ties!

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial. (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We placed this bow tie braid in a headband type design, along the front / side of her head and ended the style in a hair wrapped side ponytail.  Of course, you could finish this hairstyle with a low side bun, or braid as well.  I'm thinking a pull through braid or elastic braid in the ponytail would be very cute.  Adding beads or jewels to the center of each bow braid would be so pretty as well.

Cute hairstyle, the bow tie braid.

The trick to getting this hairstyle to turn out well is taking tiny sections (micro braiding) as you are creating the initial braids.  If you want to use larger sections, you could always make 1 or 2 hair bows instead of 3 though!

Bow Braid Hairstyle Video Tutorial

A back view of the hair wrapped side ponytail......
hair wrapped ponytail with braids

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  •  Several temporary hair ties or clips to help section and hold the hair while you are working.
  • Around 3 tiny elastics (actual number will depend on how many bows you decide to make.) The tiny elastics we used in the center of our bows are "Goody" brand (affiliate.)
  • 1 medium size hair tie or clear elastic for the top of the ponytail.
  • Pomade, gel, wax, etc. to help prevent flyaways.  If your hair is prone to frizz, I would suggest braiding your hair wet for this hairstyle to help keep things smooth.
  • 1 Clear elastic or bobby pin for securing the hair around the elastic if you are making the "hair wrapped ponytail."
We always get questions about where we got our styling head when we use her for hair tutorials.  We found it on Amazon, similar to this one. (Affiliate.)

Criss Cross Woven Ponytail Hairstyle

Quick and easy ponytail hairstyle. Criss cross woven twists.
We're loving this cute and easy ponytail hairstyle! No braiding skills required, just grab some hair elastics and you are good to go!

This criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle is inspired by a photo we saw on Instagram by "vlechtjesezo." The original style featured single banded crosses down the length of the ponytail.  We thought it was such a super cute and creative style! We decided to try our own take on it by adding 2 strand crosses, with woven twists.  We love how intricate looking the pattern turned out, although it was still fairly quick, easy, and fun to create.

This hairstyle would be great for many occasions: school, work, the beach, recitals, communions, dances, sports, church, etc.

Criss Cross Woven Ponytail Hairstyle Video Tutorial:
(Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle, video instructions.

You can add as many woven sections as you would like to your ponytail (depending on the length of hair you are working with.) I think just one section would be cute as an accent at the top of your ponytail, or you can go to the very ends of her hair.  As you can see, we went down about 3/4 the length of her ponytail with our twists.

Hair tutorial, criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle for school.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size hair tie for the top of the ponytail.
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on how many sections you decide to twist and weave.)
  • Gel, pomade, hair spray, or other product to help control flyaways.

This style will work best with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair.

Elastic Braid Twist Heart Hairstyle Tutorial For Valentine's

Elastic braid twist heart hair tutorial. Cute and easy Valentine's Day Hairstyle.
Looking for Valentine's Day hairstyles? You'll love this beautiful twisted heart, elastic braid, romantic half-up hairstyle.

This easy hairstyle would be perfect for school, work, Valentine's Day parties and dances, weddings, and other special or casual occasions. And the best part?  You don't even need to know how to braid!  This style was created by using a series of ponytails (which we call an elastic braid) to create a "french braid effect" without having to braid at all.

Elastic Braid Twist Heart Hairstyle, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We used a simple twisting technique to place the heart in this hairstyle.  If you would rather braid or rope twist each half of the heart for a slightly different look, feel free to do that instead.  Also, as mentioned in our video tutorial (above) we chose to leave this as a half up, half down hairstyle. But, you could keep going with the elastic braid (or any other type of braid) to the ends of her hair, or add a ponytail, or bun at the bottom of the heart for more of an updo look if you desire.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small hair elastics
  • Topsy Tail (optional, although it does make this style easier.) If you are wanting one, they are on sale right now on Amazon: Topsy tail link (affiliate.)
  • Finishing hairspray, gel, pomade, etc. (Optional)

Hanging Heart Ponytail

Quick and easy heart hairstyle for Valentines. Hanging heart ponytail tutorial.

Our hair tutorial this week is a cute and easy heart ponytail hairstyle!

I can't believe it is already time to start thinking about Valentine's hairstyles for 2017.  Over the years, Valentines and heart hairstyles have been some of our favorite styles to create.  If you are looking for heart hairstyle ideas, we have more than we can count on our website, some of them dating way back to 08'!  You can check those out here: Heart Hairstyles

We love that this hanging heart ponytail is quick and easy with no special braiding skills required. Perfect for school mornings!

Hanging Heart Ponytail Video Tutorial:  Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

Cute heart hairstyle. Hanging heart ponytail.

Easy heart hairstyle tutorial. Hanging heart ponytail video.

Although we demonstrated this technique showing one single heart in a ponytail, you could add more than one heart if you choose, or add this heart as an accent to a variety of different style options such as a half up, etc.  This style would not only be cute for Valentine's day, but would also make an adorable flower girl hairstyle for a wedding.

You might remember a style we posted a couple of years ago called the "heart knot hairstyle" which has been quite popular on social media.  The heart shown in our tutorial today is made using a similar technique, although the knots forming the top of the heart are tied in a slightly different way.  In our opinion, we prefer the way this "hanging heart" is shaped (with a more distinct point where the halves of the heart meet in the center.)

(Comparison photo below with the "heart knot" on the left and the "hanging heart" on the right.)

Heart knot hairstyle and hanging heart, comparison photo.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 2 small hair elastics to create the heart
  • 1 medium or large hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Pomade, gel, or other product to help control flyaways

The Best Hair Wrapped Ponytail Tutorial

The best hair wrapped ponytail, video tutorial

A "fool proof" and unique method to achieve the perfect hair wrapped ponytail. (No Bobby Pins required!)

Hey guys! We all love a cute and classic ponytail. And a popular, trendy, and well known "trick" of wrapping hair around the top of the ponytail makes it a much more polished and finished looking hairstyle.  This simple technique can take an otherwise lazy or casual ponytail into being fancy enough to wear to a red carpet event, a prom, or a wedding!  But, how many of us struggle with wrapping the hair around the ponytail and then getting it to stay?  Maybe it is just us, but we don't love the "bobby pin method" as it never holds all of the ends tucked in, the pins end up sliding out... and it can hurt.  We have also tried several methods using elastics and topsy tails, but none of them have worked perfectly for us and it usually ends up being a struggle (which kind of defeats the purpose of a seemingly effortless look.) We actually came across the method shown in our hair tutorial (below) when we filmed our "unicorn hairstyle" a few months ago.  But, I'm guessing if you are wanting to do a simple hair wrapped ponytail, you most likely wouldn't think to look for instructions by way of a unicorn hairstyle video lol, so we wanted to make this separate tutorial for you today.

Easy Hair Wrapped Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We added a small french braid with the front/top section of her hair before adding it in to the ponytail. We also share a fun "hair hack" by pushing forward on the braid to create extra volume for more of a faux hawk look.  (You will want to make your braid slightly loose for optimal results with this hack.)  The french braid is optional and we do have a french braiding tutorial if you don't know how to do that. You could also bring her bangs straight back of you wanted, or you could add a pompadour in the front instead if you prefer.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 1 medium size hair tie (large enough to contain all of your hair.)
  • 1 small, clear elastic.
  • 1 medium size clear elastic (if you are adding the french braid to the ponytail.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, finishing hairspray, etc.
This hairstyle should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, curly hair, and wavy hair.

Spindle Top Ponytail Tutorial

Spindle top ponytail hair tutorial. Quick and easy hairstyle.

A quick and easy hairstyle, perfect for school mornings!

Ponytails are a great DIY "go to" style and we all love how effortless and quick they are to make.  But, if you get tired of wearing the same old thing, this quick trick adds some extra uniqueness to the classic style and changes things up a bit.

Besides being fast and simple to create, the other awesome thing about ponytails is that they can be worn for casual or formal occasions.  This "spindle top ponytail" would be great for sports (soccer, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, etc.) to the gym, for school, work, church, or even to a prom or homecoming dance.

Spindle Top Ponytail, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Quick hairstyle for school. Spindle top ponytail tutorial.

This cute hairstyle could also be worn as a half up ponytail if you prefer and should work with most hair types and textures: Long hair, medium length hair, and even fairly short hair.... curly, wavy, or straight.  If your hair is on the shorter side, I would recommend using several sections of hair to make the loops instead of one continuous strand.

Pictured below is another option, showing how this ponytail could be worn without stretching the hair out.  I think this variation looks pretty cool, sort of like a ponytail holder made out of hair!

Simple and fast hairstyle tutorial. Spindle top ponytail.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size hair tie, preferably stretchy "cloth like" material (rather than elastic.)
  • Topsy tail. (As mentioned in our video, if you don't have a topsy tail you can wrap the sections around the hair tie by using just your fingers. But, we have found that the topsy tail does make things easier.) These can be found online here:  Topsy Tail link  (affiliate) or in some stores where beauty supplies are sold.

Halloween Hairstyles - Tangled Weave Spider Web Ponytail

Halloween hairstyles. Tangled weave spider web ponytail.

Hey guys. This week we are adding one more fun Halloween hairstyle tutorial to our collection before October is gone!  We recently went through our archives on our website (Princess Hairstyles) and found this spider web ponytail that we originally posted way back in 2008 as a pictorial. We remembered this woven spider web as being one of my daughter's favorites back then.... and she says she still remembers receiving tons of comments and compliments on this hairstyle when she wore it to a school Halloween carnival 8 years ago while she was in Kindergarten!  Of course, we decided we needed to share this spooky hairstyle in an updated video tutorial for you today.

Tangled Weave Spider Web Ponytail Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We are loving the intricate webbing design created around the ponytail with these woven twists.  As mentioned in our video, you could add a bun instead of the ponytail if you prefer, and bring the weaving all the way around her head in a full circle, just like a real spider web!

We added a cute spider bow (which was given to us years ago) to our finished design.  Of course, this is optional but a spider accessory of some kind would make the perfect finishing touch to this hairstyle.

Halloween hair. Spider web hairstyle tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this spider web hairstyle:
  • Several small, clear elastics.
  • 1 medium size hair tie or ponytail holder.
  • Several claw clips
  • A spider accessory to add to your finished web (optional.)
This spider web ponytail would be great to go with a Halloween costume, for a Halloween party, a Halloween dance, trick or treating, school or work anytime during October, for a spook alley, haunted house, crazy hair day, etc.

P.S. Although this hairstyle is fairly easy and requires no braiding skills at all... it can be time consuming.  I would give yourself 20-30 minutes to complete.

Spider Web Bun Hairstyle Tutorial

Halloween Hair, spiderweb bun tutorial. #halloween #spiderweb

This week we are showing another fun Halloween Hairstyle and this one might be our favorite so far!  We are loving this spider web bun / ponytail since it looks festive for Halloween, but isn't too over the top or crazy for teens, or even adults.  This spooky Halloween spiderweb hairstyle could be worn to school, for a Halloween party, a Halloween dance, a trip to the pumpkin patch, Oktoberfest, or as part of a costume for trick or treating.

Spider web hairstyle for #Halloween. #Halloweenhair

Halloween hairstyle. Spider web bun ponytail. Video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this spider web hairstyle:
  • We purchased the silver ribbon used to make our webbing at a local craft store.  You can use any color or type that you want. We have found that thinner ribbon works best for this style.  You could also use yarn or string if you prefer (which may lay flatter and be easier to sew in.)
  • The donut bun maker we used can be found in most stores that carry beauty supplies.  You can also find them online (affiliate.)
  • We purchased the plastic craft needle (shown in our tutorial above) at Walmart.  You could also use a regular sewing needle.
  • You will need 3 medium size hair elastics or hair ties to make the bun and several clips or temporary hair ties to hold your braids while you are working.
  • Of course if you wanted to take this style a step further, you could add a spider accessory to your web!  We have seen some plastic spider rings at the dollar store that would be perfect.  ;)

Unicorn Hairstyle For Halloween Or Crazy Hair Day

Unicorn Hairstyle Tutorial #halloweenhairstyles #halloween #crazyhairday

Since Halloween is right around the corner, for our hair tutorial this week we are sharing a fun unicorn hairstyle! This DIY unicorn horn could be used as a Halloween hairstyle, or for crazy hair day.  Looking for a horn accessory to go with your "My Little Pony" or horse costume?  Why not use your own hair?!

DIY Unicorn Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As mentioned in our video, you can make your "tail" sleek, or more voluminous.  Curls, crimping, and teasing could add some extra texture if you are looking for more volume and lift. If you are wanting a colorful mane, tail, or horn, you could definitely add some temporary spray in hair color to go with your mystical creature look.  As another fun option, if you would rather style a "mane" with your unicorn horn, you could make a series of messy buns, a pull-through braid, a french/dutch braid, curls, or faux hawk behind your horn instead of the ponytail.

Unicorn Hair Tutorial, DIY Video Instructions

In our video tutorial (above) we also show a great technique for wrapping hair around the top of your ponytail for a pretty every day look... when you aren't dressing up as a unicorn. Surprisingly enough though, recently we have actually seen a few unicorn hairstyles becoming sort of a "thing" in fashion magazines, tv shows, and around the internet.  Maybe this will be the next big trend hahaha.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 1 strong ponytail holder for the main ponytail. 1 medium size clear elastic. 1 temporary clip or hair tie to keep the hair sectioned while you are working.
  • Several bobby pins.  We used miniature bobby pins from Sally Beauty Supply (affiliate) which hold things tight extremely well.
  • Small piece of card stock.  (Approximately a 5 inch square.)
  • Clear tape.

Kaleidoscope Braid Continuation, 2 in 1 Hairstyle Tutorial

Kaleidoscope loop and kaleidoscope braid comparison. Video tutorial for both ponytails.

Hey guys, this week we are building on a style we posted last month (the kaleidoscope loop pull-through ponytail.) We love the look of the elastics in the first ponytail, but wondered what it would look like with a braid running through the center of the knotted loops.  We ended up loving the unique and intricate design of the second braided ponytail. The day my daughter wore this hairstyle, she had several people stop and ask her how it was made! It can be our little secret that this braid is much easier than it looks.

Video instructions showing how to make both kaleidoscope ponytails: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As shown in our video tutorial above, we decided to create our 2nd ponytail with a regular 3 strand braid, but you could do a fishtail braid instead if you prefer (which would be gorgeous.)

Kaleidoscope braid ponytail video tutorial, easier than it looks.

Gorgeous kaleidoscope braid. Easier than it looks. Video instructions.

Supplies needed to recreate these hairstyles:
  • 2 medium size hair ties or elastics (for the top and bottom of the ponytail.)
  • Several small elastics (the amount will depend on the length of your hair.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, or other product to help with flyaways.
If you are planning on making the second ponytail, I would suggest using elastics that will easily slide out of your hair and to not get them too tight.  It will also help immensely if you are working with wet hair or if you add some product before you start.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull-Through Ponytail Hairstyle

Kaleidoscope loop, pull-through ponytail hairstyle tutorial.

This week's ponytail hairstyle is partially inspired by a photo we saw on Pinterest a few months ago, as well as a technique used in the half-up "heart knot hairstyle tutorial" we posted for Valentines Day a couple of years ago. We did change up the technique a little bit from the heart hairstyle for this ponytail, by bringing the strands under first (instead of over) while creating the loops.

This would be a great back to school hairstyle since it is fairly quick to do and so cute!  Because elastics are used to form the loops, this should hold up fairly well throughout the school day too. You could change the colors of the elastics to match your outfits, or use clear if you want a more subtle or "grown up" look.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull Through Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We thought the finished pattern on this ponytail ended up resembling something you would see while looking through a kaleidoscope!

Back to school hairstyle! Kaleidoscope loop pull through ponytail tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on the length of hair you are working with.)
Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, I would suggest creating this hairstyle using damp hair, or adding pomade, gel, wax, etc. before tying the knots and creating the loops (to help avoid flyaways.)

This should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, and possibly curly hair.  Of course, the longer hair you have, the more pattern you can create on your ponytail.

If you like this hairstyle, you might also like our "twisted edge fishtail braid." Check it out below!

Teardrop Mermaid Braid Hairstyle

Teardrop mermaid braid hair tutorial

This week we wanted to show a simple and fairly easy braided hairstyle that would be perfect for summer.... or for a school day.   This style is a combination of a mermaid braid, a French lace braid, and a ponytail.  We love how thia mermaid braid starts in the center, then opens up into a "teardrop shape."  As mentioned in our tutorial (below) you can finish this hairstyle in a number of ways.  If you wanted to add a braid at the bottom (instead of a ponytail) you could add a fishtail, rope braid, 3-strand, 4-strand, etc.  I think a bun or updo would also be a cute way to finish this style.

Teardrop Mermaid Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Teardrop mermaid braid hairstyle, video tutorial

Cute hairstyle, the teardrop mermaid braid tutorial

Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, you may want to braid the hair damp like we did to help avoid flyaways and to keep the hair smooth. Of course, some hair textures will work best when braided dry, so do whatever works for you.  If you would like, you can also use hair products such as pomade, gel, or wax as you are braiding.

This style should work with straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair, long hair, and medium length hair.

Quilted Pull Through Braid Ponytail Tutorial

Quilted pull-through braid hairstyle, video tutorial.

This quilted pull-through ponytail is a variation of a style we posted last week (the multi strand pull through braid.) As mentioned in our video (below) the only difference between the 2 braids is the placement of the elastics, but as you can see.... the ponytails turn out completely different looking with this small change. (Comparison between the 2 braids below.)

Quilted pull through ponytail and multi strand pull through comparison.
(Quilted pull through ponytail on the left, multi strand ponytail on the right.)
Quilted Pull Through Braid Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We love the 3d effect of this style.  If you try this braid, you will noticed the "quilted" pattern shows up along the front, sides, and back of the ponytail.  So fun!

Quilted pull-through ponytail, side view.

Quilted pull through braid side view.

This braid can be stretched out to add more volume and dimension to the style, or you can leave it "as is" like we did, (which also turns out quite voluminous.)  Of course, this pull through braid can be done in a high ponytail or low ponytail, as a side braid, or even as a half up hairstyle.

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • 1 medium size elastic or hair tie for the top of the ponytail.
  • Several medium/small clear elastics (the amount will depend on your hair length.)
  • Pomade, gel, or other product to help control flyaways.
This hairstyle would be great for sports, school, work, the beach, special occasions, or every day casual occasions.

Multi Strand Pull-Through Ponytail

Multi-strand pull-through ponytail, hair tutorial.

This week we are featuring a braid we saw on Instagram a few months ago on an awesome hairstyling account @merobraids. We loved how unique and intricate this woven ponytail looked when we saw it, and had to give it a try!

We first saw the idea of using more than 2 strands in a regular pull-through braid from @prettylittlebraids on Instagram, when she came up with the idea of using 3 strands, and my daughter has actually worn the 3 strand pull-through braid (or 3D) version quite often.  This is the same concept, just taken up a strand... or 10.

Multi Strand Pull Through Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial:  (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As mentioned in our video, you can count the number of strands you are pulling through each layer for more of a precise braid, or you can just go with the flow like I did.  After working with the braid a little bit after I filmed this video, I would recommend starting with an elastic in the first layer (on the bottom strand) instead of doing it without (like I did in the tutorial.)  It is easier that way and turns out better as well.  ;)

This style is quite easy to create once you get the pattern down, but it can be a little tricky keeping all of the sections separated.  If you are working on an actual person, I would recommend having them hold 1 or 2 of the sections for you while you are braiding, which will help tremendously.  I have done this with my daughter and it is much easier.  Or, as mentioned in our tutorial, you can use a clip to help keep one of the sections out of your way as well.

Multi strand pull through braid hairstyle, video instructions.

Although this ponytail looks kind of delicate with its "sideways fishtail design," it is actually quite durable and would be great for school, sports, the gym, etc.  This would also look awesome wrapped up into a bun, which would be perfect for dance, ballet, figure skating, and other special occasions.

Supplies needed to recreate this ponytail:
  • 1 large hair elastic or hair tie for the top of the ponytail.
  • Several medium size clear elastics. The amount will depend on the length of hair you are working with.
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, etc. To help control flyaways. (Optional)
P.S. If you love this ponytail, we have filmed 2 more fun variations of this braid and will be posting them over the next few weeks!

Fancy Fishtail Kit Hair Tutorial, Fishtail Braid With Beads

Goody Fancy Fishtail Braid Kit, Video Tutorial

We recently purchased a "Fancy Fishtail Kit" (made by Goody) and thought it was so fun, we decided to do a tutorial with it.  My daughter wears fishtail braids to school quite often, but loves the subtle style and flair these beads add to the braid.  On top of that, this tool is so much quicker for her than creating a regular fishtail braid (which can be quite time consuming on long hair) and on school mornings, she is all about quick!

Fishtail Braid With Beads, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

This hairstyle would be great for all ages... teens, little girls, even moms.  I could also see this working for casual as well as formal occasions.  The braid itself is quite standard, but the beads give it more of a glamorous look, which would be pretty for Prom, Homecoming, church, recitals, weddings, etc.  You can choose to leave the braid sleek and neat looking, or stretch it out and deconstruct it a bit for more of a relaxed, trendy, and voluminous look.

My daughter was at school the day I had time to film this tutorial, but we wanted to show you what this looks like on real human hair. I think it's so pretty!

Fancy fishtail braid with beads, video tutorial. Easy.

This braid can be created on the side (as shown) or in the low center.  Of course, this could also be placed in a high ponytail if you prefer, or even made as a half up hairstyle or wrapped into a bun.

This will work best with medium length or long hair and would be adorable with curly or wavy hair as well as straight. If your hair is longer than the tool,  you can extend the braid all the way to the end of your ponytail with a regular fishtail braid if you prefer, or you can stop at the last bead like we did.

As mentioned in our video, this kit comes in several different colors.  I have seen the beads in silver, gold, and black.  I tried searching online for a link to this kit and did not find it, even on Amazon (I think it is too new.)  But, it can be found in most discount and drug stores (we purchased ours at Walmart.) I am including a picture of the packaging (below) so that you can hopefully find if it if you are wanting one.
