Hanging Heart Ponytail

Quick and easy heart hairstyle for Valentines. Hanging heart ponytail tutorial.

Our hair tutorial this week is a cute and easy heart ponytail hairstyle!

I can't believe it is already time to start thinking about Valentine's hairstyles for 2017.  Over the years, Valentines and heart hairstyles have been some of our favorite styles to create.  If you are looking for heart hairstyle ideas, we have more than we can count on our website, some of them dating way back to 08'!  You can check those out here: Heart Hairstyles

We love that this hanging heart ponytail is quick and easy with no special braiding skills required. Perfect for school mornings!

Hanging Heart Ponytail Video Tutorial:  Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

Cute heart hairstyle. Hanging heart ponytail.

Easy heart hairstyle tutorial. Hanging heart ponytail video.

Although we demonstrated this technique showing one single heart in a ponytail, you could add more than one heart if you choose, or add this heart as an accent to a variety of different style options such as a half up, etc.  This style would not only be cute for Valentine's day, but would also make an adorable flower girl hairstyle for a wedding.

You might remember a style we posted a couple of years ago called the "heart knot hairstyle" which has been quite popular on social media.  The heart shown in our tutorial today is made using a similar technique, although the knots forming the top of the heart are tied in a slightly different way.  In our opinion, we prefer the way this "hanging heart" is shaped (with a more distinct point where the halves of the heart meet in the center.)

(Comparison photo below with the "heart knot" on the left and the "hanging heart" on the right.)

Heart knot hairstyle and hanging heart, comparison photo.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 2 small hair elastics to create the heart
  • 1 medium or large hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Pomade, gel, or other product to help control flyaways

Kaleidoscope Braid Continuation, 2 in 1 Hairstyle Tutorial

Kaleidoscope loop and kaleidoscope braid comparison. Video tutorial for both ponytails.

Hey guys, this week we are building on a style we posted last month (the kaleidoscope loop pull-through ponytail.) We love the look of the elastics in the first ponytail, but wondered what it would look like with a braid running through the center of the knotted loops.  We ended up loving the unique and intricate design of the second braided ponytail. The day my daughter wore this hairstyle, she had several people stop and ask her how it was made! It can be our little secret that this braid is much easier than it looks.

Video instructions showing how to make both kaleidoscope ponytails: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As shown in our video tutorial above, we decided to create our 2nd ponytail with a regular 3 strand braid, but you could do a fishtail braid instead if you prefer (which would be gorgeous.)

Kaleidoscope braid ponytail video tutorial, easier than it looks.

Gorgeous kaleidoscope braid. Easier than it looks. Video instructions.

Supplies needed to recreate these hairstyles:
  • 2 medium size hair ties or elastics (for the top and bottom of the ponytail.)
  • Several small elastics (the amount will depend on the length of your hair.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, or other product to help with flyaways.
If you are planning on making the second ponytail, I would suggest using elastics that will easily slide out of your hair and to not get them too tight.  It will also help immensely if you are working with wet hair or if you add some product before you start.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull-Through Ponytail Hairstyle

Kaleidoscope loop, pull-through ponytail hairstyle tutorial.

This week's ponytail hairstyle is partially inspired by a photo we saw on Pinterest a few months ago, as well as a technique used in the half-up "heart knot hairstyle tutorial" we posted for Valentines Day a couple of years ago. We did change up the technique a little bit from the heart hairstyle for this ponytail, by bringing the strands under first (instead of over) while creating the loops.

This would be a great back to school hairstyle since it is fairly quick to do and so cute!  Because elastics are used to form the loops, this should hold up fairly well throughout the school day too. You could change the colors of the elastics to match your outfits, or use clear if you want a more subtle or "grown up" look.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull Through Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We thought the finished pattern on this ponytail ended up resembling something you would see while looking through a kaleidoscope!

Back to school hairstyle! Kaleidoscope loop pull through ponytail tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on the length of hair you are working with.)
Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, I would suggest creating this hairstyle using damp hair, or adding pomade, gel, wax, etc. before tying the knots and creating the loops (to help avoid flyaways.)

This should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, and possibly curly hair.  Of course, the longer hair you have, the more pattern you can create on your ponytail.

If you like this hairstyle, you might also like our "twisted edge fishtail braid." Check it out below!

Umbrella Lace Hairstyle Tutorial

Umbrella lace hair tutorial

This week we have combined a pompadour, some regular braids, and a unique knotting technique to create this cute half-up hairstyle and design, which we think resembles a fancy lacy umbrella!  This fun hairstyle would be great for school, church, recitals, communions, weddings, special occasions, etc.

The overall shape and concept of this hairstyle is similar to a few of our past favorites, which we have shown on our blog previously.... the "arrowhead braid" and the "fairy wings braid."

Umbrella Lace Hairstyle, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Cute braided hairstyle, "umbrella lace."

Knots and braids hairstyle, umbrella lace.

This hairstyle is actually quite easy to create, but as shown in our tutorial (and depending on the texture of your hair) you will probably need to add some water, gel, pomade, or other product before making the knots (to help control flyaways and keep things looking neat and smooth.)  We noticed as this style dries, the design really "pops" and looks so beautiful!  She received tons of compliments the day she wore this hairstyle.  I'm sure you will too!

Gorgeous hairstyle for school, umbrella lace video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 3 small, clear elastics.
  • Water, gel, or pomade, to help control frizz and flyaways.
  • Finishing hairspray.
P.S. If you would rather not wear your hair down, you could definitely add a braid, ponytail, or bun with the remaining hair to keep everything up and out of your way.

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid, Hairstyle On People Magazine Cover

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid Tutorial

*We took a "photo of the photo" on the right from a magazine cover. Original credit to People Magazine.

A few weeks ago (while standing in line at the grocery store) I noticed this hairstyle worn by Nicole Brown Simpson, on the cover of People Magazine.  Of course, it immediately caught my eye as it is a beautiful braid. And although the photo must be at least 20 years old (since she passed away in 1994) this is a braid that I don't think I have never seen before! Apparently I was not the only one to notice this unique looking braid because over the past several weeks, we have had over 10 requests for a tutorial from fellow braiding enthusiasts!

After studying the photo and trying several different methods of recreating the braid on our mannequin, I could not choose between 2 techniques... so I am showing you both of those in our video today.

Nicole Brown Simpson Braid, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Keep in mind... Of course, I have no idea how this braid was actually created on Nicole (I wasn't there.)  ;) This is just our interpretation with a similar looking outcome. Our first technique I think looks most similar to the original braid. If you take smaller sections than what I show in our tutorial (above) and keep the braid tighter, you should have an almost identical match to Nicole's braid.

Nicole Brown Simpson inspired hairstyle tutorial

The 2nd technique shown in our video is not new.  It is one that I remember seeing awhile ago on a Russian YouTube account: "Русский."  This braid looks very similar as well.... but not quite the same. On Nicole,  the hair in the middle is laying straight all the way down, where on this braid you can see a slight twist between the sections. But as shown in our tutorial, this braid is easier to take out when you are done, so it may be the way to go!

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 small, clear elastic to hold the braid at the end.
  • Gel, pomade, or water to help control flyaways.
  • Finishing hairspray.
P.S. We always get questions about where we got our mannequin head.  We found it on Amazon. (Affiliate) The one we purchased is synthetic hair because I didn't want to spend a lot on it. Although if you are looking for better quality, human hair is the way to go.

2 Easy Heart Knot Ponytails, Valentine's Day Hairstyles

2 easy heart ponytail hairstyles for valentine's day

We wanted to share one more heart hairstyle with you this year before Valentine's day! Although as you can see, we actually ended up with 1 heart ponytail and a bonus 2nd style as well, which sort of looks like a heart too.... or just a fancy braided ponytail that could be worn any time!  ;)

Easy Heart Knot Ponytail Hairstyles For Valentine's Day, Video Tutorials: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

The first heart ponytail in our video is inspired by a hairstyle we saw on facebook recently, which unfortunately had been shared with no link back to the original creator that I could find.  We love how simple, quick and cute this braided heart ponytail is.  Definitely one that could be a DIY!

Heart knot hairstyle tutorial. Easy!

The second style in our video is a variation of the first.  We added a simple French twist on each side of the ponytail for some extra texture and volume.  We love how this 2nd ponytail turned out, but the heart shape is not as defined as the first style (since the braids are partially hidden under the twists on each side.)  Although this is not one of our best braided hearts, we thought the hairstyle was still super cute for many other occasions, so decided to share it anyway.

Cute and easy ponytail with twists and braids

Supplies needed to recreate these ponytails:
  • 1 medium size clear elastic
  • 1 small, clear elastic
  • 2 temporary hair ties or clips
  • Topsy Tail (optional)
P.S. We purchased the topsy tail (affiliate) shown in our video online. The one we bought is made by "Conair" and seems to be of better quality than other cheaper versions we have tried (which tend to break easily.)

Half-Up Diagonal Knots Hairstyle Tutorial

Cute diagonal knot hairstyle tutorial

We've had a lot of requests for "teen hairstyles" lately, so this week we wanted to create a pretty, half-up hairstyle with a slightly messy, tousled, relaxed look (which is so trendy and popular right now.) To make this knot design, we are using a technique from a video we posted a few years ago called "seashell knots." We decided to try placing the knots in a diagonal pattern and loved how it turned out! As shown in our tutorial (below) we stopped after making 4 knots, which created a half-up hairstyle. Of course, if you wanted to continue making more knots, you could go down further. You could possibly even incorporate all of the hair to form one large diagonal knotted braid or updo if you wanted to!

Half-Up Diagonal Knots Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Diagonal knotted braid hair tutorial

Diagonal knots half-up hairstyle tutorial

Depending on what you wear, this style could work for casual occasions (such as school or work) or for more dressed up or fancy events. I think this would be an adorable hairstyle for formal dances (Prom, Homecoming) or maybe even for weddings.

This hairstyle would be cute on straight, wavy, or curly hair. In the video, we are working with 2nd day curling wand curls.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 small hair elastic for each knot. I would suggest clear, or something similar to the color of hair you are working with.
  • Curling wand, curling iron, rollers, etc. (If you want curls.)
  • Finishing hairspray (optional.)

Flip Knot Waterfall Feather Braid

Flip knot waterfall feather braid video tutorial

This fun waterfall/feather braid is a variation of the "flip knot braid" we posted last week.  Of course, waterfall braids have always been a favorite braiding technique of ours.... a favorite most likely shared with many.  I mean really, who doesn't love the intricate, yet relaxed bohemian look of a waterfall braid?  So gorgeous! This knotted variation is great if you are looking for something unique and a little bit different from the standard braided waterfall (which has become so popular.)

Unique waterfall braid, the "flip knot"

This braid can be worn on the side (as shown in our tutorial below.) Or, you could bring the braid all the way around her head horizontally or diagonally.  You could make a braid on each side and join them in the center.  Or, you could use this braid as an accent to a ponytail, updo, bun etc.  This could really be the base for an endless amount of hairstyles if you want to get creative. ;)

You could wear this hairstyle for school, work, every day, the beach, etc.  Or for more formal or special occasions.  With the right dress, I could see this working for Prom, Homecoming, Weddings, Brides, Flower Girls, Communions, or photos.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 small elastic to tie off the braid
  • comb or brush
  • water, gel, pomade or wax (to help control flyaways)

We have shown several variations of the waterfall braid over the years on our blog. If you love waterfalls as much as we do, you can browse through a few of them here:

Flip Knot Braid Hairstyle

Flip knot braid video tutorial

We have done several knotted hairstyles here on our "hair blog" in the past, and love them. I think knots are fun to try if you are wanting something different and unique. We tend to wear standard braids at our house most often, and knots are a great way to mix things up every now and then. This particular knot braid is somewhat similar to our "spiral knot french braid" which we posted way back in 2011 and is still one of our favorites!

Flip knot braid hairstyle tutorial

This braid/knot could be used to create many different hairstyles. We have chosen to place this braid in the front/side of her head (using the bangs area) with her hair mostly down as a simple style for our tutorial today. You could add another braid on the other side of her head if you wanted, or use this braid as an accent for a cute updo, ponytail, or bun.  Be sure to check back next week... We have filmed another fun variation of this braid that we really love.  <3

Cute knotted hairstyle tutorial

Our video tutorial (below) was shot using our hair mannequin "Plastic Patty."  But, we wanted to include a few pictures of this braid on human hair for you as well.  The Princess has worn this style a few times and loves how quick, cute, and simple it is.  This would be a great style for school, work, church, or other occasion.

Cute and simple "flip knot braid"

Supplies needed to create this style:
  • 1 medium size hair elastic to tie off the braid.
  • Pomade, gel, water, etc. (To help keep flyaways under control.)
Flip Knot Braid Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

I wanted to mention that whenever we post a hairstyle using knots, we always get questions about taking it out... and if it is difficult or if it damages or tangles her hair. In our experience, knotted braids come out quite easily (just like any other braid.) I assume you wouldn't want to purposefully tie the knots too tight, or use super thin strands to make your knots, as this might create a knot that would be harder to get out. We have never had any trouble with any of the knotted styles the princess has worn though.... and she has worn a lot!  ;)

Heart Knot Hairstyle

heart hairstyle tutorial, quick and easy

Our tutorial this week: A cute, easy, and quick half-up heart hairstyle!  This would be a cute hairstyle for Valentine's Day, a flower girl, or for school.

"The Princess" actually was the one who came across this fun heart hairstyle a couple of weeks ago while watching another awesome hairstyling channel called "Bebexo." (You can find Bebexo's original tutorial for this cute style here.)  As she often does, "the princess" recreated this hairstyle on her doll (Daisy) after watching the original video. We both thought the end result was so cute that we wanted to share it... and she volunteered to do the tutorial, so be sure to watch her video below.  She did a great job!  ;)

Of course, we wanted to try this pretty hairstyle out on the princess as well as on her doll (as shown above.)  We are always getting requests for hairstyles that are easy enough to do on yourself, and this one is perfect for that.  The princess actually did this one all on her own!

heart knot hairstyle for valentines day

Over our past 7 years of hair blogging/vlogging we have posted quite a few heart hairstyles and Valentine's Day hairstyles (we love them.)  Although I think this "heart knot" has to be one of the easiest, quickest, and cutest!  Several of our "older" heart designs can be found at the following link, if you are interested in browsing through them: Heart Hairstyle Ideas

Supplies needed to create this style:
  • 2 small elastics
  • Temporary clip (optional)
  • Pomade or gel (optional)

P.S. The doll she is using in this tutorial came from "My Salon Doll."

Didn't she do a wonderful job, by the way?  We will have to have her film more often!

Formal Half Updo Hairstyle, Cascading Curls and Chains

Cascading curls and chains half up hairstyle tutorial

We wanted to create a formal half up half down hairstyle for our tutorial this week.  I'm sure many of you will be attending holiday parties, formal dances, recitals, concerts, church, winter weddings, Christmas celebrations, Hanukkah, New Years Eve (among other fancy schmancy events) this season. This fancy hairstyle would be perfect for many of these special occasions and is actually quite easy to recreate. Yay!

Half up half down formal hairstyle tutorial

One of our all time favorite hairstyling techniques (and one of the very first posts we ever placed on this hair blog) is the "chain braid."  It has been quite awhile since we have shown this technique in a hairstyle, so we wanted to add a chain to this elegant style today.  The Princess always receives compliments when she is wearing chains (as they are quite unique looking.)  I'm sure you will too!

pretty half updo hairstyle with curls

As you can see, we placed a chain on just one side of this hairstyle and left the other side plain.  If you prefer, you can add a chain to both sides.

Since the Princess doesn't have any bangs, we used the hair in the very front to create our headband made of hair.... which we refer to as "Barbie bangs." If your daughter has bangs (or fringe) cut, you can make the headband directly behind the bangs and it should work just fine.

fancy hairstyle with cascading curls

And then of course, what would a half updo be without some cascading curls? We love the "princessy" look of this hairstyle and the glamorous volume created with these curls. Beyond the holidays, I could see this working for Prom, Homecoming, or maybe even a bride.

Elegant half up hairstyle, cascading curls and chains

Supplies needed to recreate this style:
  • 3 small elastics
  • Several bobby pins
  • Water, gel, or pomade to help control flyaways
  • Curling iron or curling wand

I would plan on about 15 minutes to complete this pretty hairstyle (depending on how much of the hair you choose to curl.)  As shown in our video below, we only curled the hair in the half ponytail, which did save some time.
