  • 1 headband
  • 1 medium size, clear elastic
  • Scissors
  • Decorative flowers, ribbons, or other accessories (optional)
  • Hot glue gun

Bow Tie Braid, Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial.

You'll love this adorable braided hairstyle with bows made from hair!  This hairstyle would be great for school, recitals, weddings, flower girls, church, communions, and other special occasions.

This hair tutorial and basic concept was inspired by a photo we saw on an awesome Instagram account by @mylittlebraids. We thought the lace braids and feathered strands were so delicate and beautiful, we had to give it a try!  The elastic bows sitting centered between the 2 lace French braids look a lot like little "bow ties" to us.  So cute!  If you like this hairstyle, you may want to check out our "fishtail bow braid" from a few years ago which is also a very cute style using hair to make bow ties!

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial. (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We placed this bow tie braid in a headband type design, along the front / side of her head and ended the style in a hair wrapped side ponytail.  Of course, you could finish this hairstyle with a low side bun, or braid as well.  I'm thinking a pull through braid or elastic braid in the ponytail would be very cute.  Adding beads or jewels to the center of each bow braid would be so pretty as well.

Cute hairstyle, the bow tie braid.

The trick to getting this hairstyle to turn out well is taking tiny sections (micro braiding) as you are creating the initial braids.  If you want to use larger sections, you could always make 1 or 2 hair bows instead of 3 though!

Bow Braid Hairstyle Video Tutorial

A back view of the hair wrapped side ponytail......

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  •  Several temporary hair ties or clips to help section and hold the hair while you are working.
  • Around 3 tiny elastics (actual number will depend on how many bows you decide to make.) The tiny elastics we used in the center of our bows are "Goody" brand (affiliate.)
  • 1 medium size hair tie or clear elastic for the top of the ponytail.
  • Pomade, gel, wax, etc. to help prevent flyaways.  If your hair is prone to frizz, I would suggest braiding your hair wet for this hairstyle to help keep things smooth.
  • 1 Clear elastic or bobby pin for securing the hair around the elastic if you are making the "hair wrapped ponytail."
We always get questions about where we got our styling head when we use her for hair tutorials.  We found it on Amazon, similar to this one. (Affiliate.)

Cookie Cutter Waterfall Braid Tutorial

Cute and unique half up hairstyle. The cookie cutter waterfall braid.

For our braiding tutorial this week, we have combined a "cookie cutter braid" and a "waterfall twist braid" to create a beautiful and unique half up hairstyle design which we are in love with!  The ever popular and fashionable "waterfall twist braid" is one of my daughter's favorite braids and she wears it often in a variety of hairstyles for school.  Adding the whimsical cookie cutter design on one side of the head adds such an unexpected and eye catching element to this ordinarily simple style.

Although this hairstyle looks fairly intricate, as shown in our video tutorial (below) it is not difficult to create.  This would be a cute hairstyle for school, church, special occasions, dances, recitals, proms, homecomings, weddings, etc.

Cookie Cutter Waterfall Braid Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Waterfall twist and cookie cutter braid combo hairstyle. Video tutorial.

Cookie cutter waterfall braid video tutorial. Braiding instructions.

Of course, if you wanted to add more than one cookie cutter braid inside your waterfall twist, you definitely could.  It would be fabulous to place several braids, evenly spaced across the top of her head like a headband!  Or you could add 2 braids to the waterfall twist, one on each side of her head.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 2 small, clear elastics
  • 1 temporary hair tie or clip to keep your braid from unraveling while you work.
  • Pomade, gel, or hair wax.
This braid will work best with long hair, or medium length hair. Straight, wavy, or curly hair should be fine (although you will most likely need to use some hair product and/or wet hair if you are working with curls to help the strands in the cookie cutter braid lay nicely.)

If you are wanting to wear this design for a more active event, I would suggest placing your remaining hair into a ponytail, bun, or other braid... instead of leaving it mostly down.

Romantic Side Swept Braided Rose Hairstyle

Romantic side swept braided rose hairstyle tutorial

"The Princess" was a flower girl in a wedding recently, so we thought it would be fun to show the pretty hairstyle that she wore for the event. This doesn't have to be just a hairstyle for flower girls though.... This glamorous hairstyle would also be great for brides and bridesmaids, prom, homecoming, Valentine's Day, communions, recitals, date night, church, etc.

Pretty hairstyle for special occasions

We wanted some texture in her hair to help create a glamorous side swept look, so we started with some curling wand curls.  Click here for a more detailed video showing how to curl your hair using a curling wand.  After braiding in a lace French braid headband on top, we wrapped the end of the braid around and underneath her hair to help keep the curls contained and placed to the side of her head. Lastly, we added a braided rosette accent to the side.

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 2 small, clear elastics.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Curling wand/iron, rollers, naturally curly hair (if you want curls.)
We love how soft and pretty this hairstyle turned out!  Perfect for all ages and many formal events.

Halloween Hairstyles, Queen Elinor Hair

Halloween hairstyle. Brave ponytail tutorial. Merida's mom Queen Elinor hair.

We are continuing on with our "Halloween Hairstyles series" this week with a fun Queen Elinor inspired ribbon wrapped ponytail (as seen in the Disney movie "Brave" on Merida's mother.)

We noticed Queen Elinor actually wears 2 variations of this hairstyle in the movie; The first, as a single ponytail (which we chose for our tutorial today.) And the other is basically the same concept, only doubled up in 2 ribbon ponytails (or pigtails) laying side by side.  I think both styles are gorgeous and perfect to go with a variety of medieval, princess, queen or royal costumes.

We are loving the effortless look of this ponytail and would actually consider wearing it on regular occasions (such as school) and not just for dressing up.

Halloween hairstyle idea. Disney's Brave ponytail tutorial.

Depending on the thickness of your hair, you may want to tease it slightly to add more volume... or you can choose to skip that step and leave it "as is." We love the "bubbled" look of the ponytail, which was made by stretching the hair between the ribbon (shown in our video tutorial below.) But, this step can also be skipped if you prefer your ponytail to lay more straight and sleek.

Supplies needed to recreate this style:
  • 1 ponytail holder or large elastic.
  • 1 medium, clear elastic or small ponytail holder.
  • We chose some gold ribbon for wrapping around our ponytail.  You can use whatever you have on hand (leather, yarn, rope, ribbon, etc.)
  • We also added a gold braided headband accessory to accent the style.  Queen Elinor of course was wearing a gold crown if you really want your costume to be authentic. ;)
  • An Elinor costume to go with your hairstyle (optional of course.) We found the dress shown in our photos at a local store in the Halloween section.... and it wasn't actually meant to be a Queen Elinor costume.

Hairstyles For Sports, Woven Twist Headband

Woven twist headband hairstyle tutorial

Today we are recreating a fun hairstyle from our website which we initially posted way back in 2010. You can click over to see our original "pictorial" and check out "the princess's" short hair if you are curious!

She has worn this woven headband many times over the years and especially loves it for sports. This hairstyle is great for soccer / football, gymnastics, dance, figure skating, ballet, tumbling, swimming, running, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, etc. Elastic styles (such as this) really help to keep your hair out of your face while exercising and hold up well, even with a lot of activity. We love the unique woven accents in this headband, which make this hairstyle pretty and interesting to look at, as well as functional.

Woven Twist Headband Video Tutorial:  (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

There are several different options for finishing this style. You could create the woven headband and leave the rest of her hair down (curled or straight.) Or you could add a ponytail, bun, braid, pigtails, etc. with the remaining hair. (We have included a few example pictures below.) Also, if you would rather braid the individual strands in the headband before you weave them, you can do that instead of simply twisting the hair like we did.

Top view of the headband with a ponytail....

Woven twist headband and ponytail hair tutorial

Again, styled with a ponytail. This is her favorite way to wear this hairstyle for soccer.

Cute hairstyle for gymnastics, woven twist headband

And, with a messy bun....
Hairstyle for sports, woven twist headband and messy bun

This headband could also be worn as a cute transitioning hairstyle for those of you who are in the process of growing out your bangs. We know what a painful process that can be. ;)  And although "the princess" has long hair at the moment, this will work with fairly short hair as well.  When we first created this style, her hair was just above shoulder length and it worked just great!

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • Small hair elastics (8-15 depending on how you make the headband.)  The brand we usually use is called Goody Ouchless.
  • Water, gel, or pomade to help control flyaways.
  • A "rat tail comb" is helpful for parting out the hair into boxes, but not absolutely necessary.

Half Up Hairstyle, Braided Rosette and Feathered Headband

Pretty half up rosette braid and headband video tutorial

We were in the mood for an elegant and pretty hairstyle this week.  This style was created by taking several elements (a dutch feather braid headband, a regular 3 strand braid, a braided rosette) and combining them to form a fancy half up hairstyle. This classic style would be great for many special or formal occasions such as church, dances, recitals, communions, baptisms, flower girls, weddings, renaissance faires, etc.  I think the dainty side rosette and the braid swooping across the back of her head gives this style a romantic, feminine, and vintage look.

Elegant rosette braid hairstyle tutorial

The Princess usually prefers hairstyles which are fairly sleek, tight, and neat. She says that loose braids bug her sometimes as she feels like they are falling out.  ;)  But, if your personal style is more of a tousled look, you can definitely stretch out and loosen the braid in the feathered headband as well as the braided flower for more of an effortless or messy look. If you prefer a waterfall braid over a feather braid, you can do that instead (for the headband.) But, we have found that the feather braid tends to hold up better. Some waves or curls could also be added for a cute finishing touch if you desire.

Disney's Cinderella Ball Hairstyle Tutorial 2015

Cinderella hair tutorial

This tutorial is inspired by the hairstyle Lily James aka Cinderella wore to the ball in the 2015 Disney Cinderella movie.

Ever since the new Cinderella movie was announced, we have had many requests for a Cinderella hairstyle tutorial.  We're a little slow on getting around to this, but we finally saw the show in theatres this past weekend. We loved it, by the way!  We also noticed the many cute braided hairstyles throughout.  But, we decided to film a tutorial for the ball hairstyle, as it was the most requested.

As a bonus, this simple and elegant style is quite easy and should work with most hair lengths and textures.

Cinderella hairstyle tutorial from the ball

Photo courtesy, the official Cinderella movie trailer.

You might notice in our pictures that "the Princess's" hair didn't turn out quite as curly as Cinderella's did.  We were a little disappointed in our curls as we ended up having to take the curlers out after just a couple of hours, and they didn't hold as well as they usually do.  We wanted the curls to look effortless and natural, but not quite as flat and blah as they turned out!  If I were to try this style again, I would leave our curlers in overnight, or go for a curling wand or curling iron. ;)

Disney Cinderella hairstyle tutorial

The braided headband in this style can be made in several different ways, depending on your hair length and thickness.  If your hair is fine, I would recommend making a braid on each side and doubling them up to make the headband appear to be thicker and more textured.  And of course, if your hair is shorter, you can make a braid on each side and join the ends at the top, instead of the braids having to reach all the way across her head.  We chose a rope braid because the headband on Cinderella appears to be a twist of some sort, but of course, you can do any type of braid you want.  If I had to guess, I would say the original hairstyle was probably created by using a hair piece for the headband, as well as some added extensions for the glamorous looking curls.  You can purchase a synthetic braided headband if you want, which would make your hair appear to be thicker and the braid more voluminous.

If you are looking for some magical sparkle just like Cinderella, some glitter could also be added as the finishing touch!

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small, clear elastics
  • Several bobby pins
  • Naturally curly hair ;) or a curling wand, curling iron, or other curling method.  We have a tutorial for our "sponge rag rollers" if you want to try that.
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)

St. Patrick's Day Hairstyles, Braided Ribbon Headband and Clover

St. Patrick's Day hairstyle tutorial

This week we wanted to put together a quick St. Patrick's Day hairstyle idea, since St. Patrick's is right around the corner.  ;)  This hairstyle is a spin off of a technique we posted a few years ago, the ribbon flower/clover.  We think this ribbon "4 leaf clover" looks cute as an accent to the braided headband on this style.

4 leaf clover ribbon headband tutorial

Of course, this hairstyle can be used for other occasions besides just St. Patrick's Day. The green ribbon can be switched out for any color you want.   And, instead of forming a clover or shamrock with the ribbon, you could actually just tie a regular bow instead.

Ribbon braid headband video tutorial

We were trying to keep this hairstyle fairly simple and quick. But if you want to create the headband using a French braiding technique, you can definitely add in hair from the bangs area while you are braiding for a more intricate braid.  Also, if the 4 strand braid is too difficult or time consuming for your liking, you can actually make this style using just a regular 3 strand braid (with the ribbon replacing one strand.)

St. Patrick's Day clover headband tutorial

Supplies Needed To Recreate This Hairstyle:
  • 2 3ft (approx.) lengths of ribbon
  • 1 small hair elastic
  • temporary hair tie or clip
  • scissors to trim the ribbon

Braided Heart Headband, Valentine's Day Hairstyles

Heart headband hairstyle for Valentine's Day

Each year since we began blogging (from 2008 - 2015) we have added a few heart hairstyles to our Valentine's Day Hairstyles collection.  Some of our first styles were from before we even started making videos on YouTube and include a "pictorial" instead of video instructions. But, if you are looking for more heart hairstyle ideas or Valentine's styles in general, feel free to visit our blog here.   At last count, we had over 20 different heart styles to choose from!  And, we are not the only ones creating cute Valentine's hairdos, look here to see more fun styles from all around the web. ;)

Heart headband hairstyle

For our last Valentine's style of this year, we chose a "braided heart headband" which is inspired by a photo we saw on Instagram last February on "chikas_chic" account:   We thought this braided headband was so cute and girly that we had to try and recreate it.  I think this has to be one of our favorite heart hairdos to date!

Heart headband with side ponytail

We chose to finish off our style with a side ponytail the day we filmed our tutorial (we were going out and it was incredibly windy.)  But of course, if you would rather leave your hair mostly down, this hairstyle is super cute worn as just the headband itself. Some added curls or waves would also add a nice romantic touch, if you have some extra time.

Dutch braid headband

We decided on a Dutch braid (or inside out French braid) for the base braid in our headband.  You can make a regular French braid, lace braid (or any other type of braid) if you prefer.

Supplies needed to create this style:
  • 2 small hair elastics
  • hair clip
  • temporary hair ties
  • gel or pomade (optional)
  • topsy tail (optional)
  • bow or other accessory (optional)
