Faux French Braids and Braided Bow, Cross Bow Hairstyle Tutorial

Faux lace braids and braided bow hair tutorial. Cross Bow Hairstyle.

An adorable braided half up hairstyle without having to know how to french braid!

In today's hair tutorial we are showing how to create a braided bow made out of your own hair, in the center of 2 crossing faux french braids. We thought this style turned out so pretty and feminine looking.  A true princess hairstyle!

Cross Bow Hairstyle, Video Tutorial:  (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We love half up hairstyles for teens and girls of all ages, and this one is just so cute. This style is easy, even for those who don't know how to french braid.  Of course, if the bow is too much for you, you could leave it off for more of a simple, but still unique braided look as well.

"Cross bow hairstyle." Faux french braids and bow, video tutorial.

The faux lace braids on each side are made by pulling the hair through a regular 3 strand braid, which can be accomplished with a topsy tail tool (affiliate) or just your fingers.  We have shown this faux braiding technique on our blog before, and both methods seem to work equally well.  This hairstyle would be a cute back to school hairstyle, or could be used for special occasions such as Prom, Homecoming, communions, weddings, church, recitals, etc.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 2 small, clear hair elastics
  • 1 medium size, clear hair elastic.
  • Topsy Tail (affiliate) optional.
This style will work best with long and medium length hair. Straight hair, curly hair or wavy hair.  You may want to add hair product, water (or both) before pulling the sections through the braid if your hair is prone to flyaways.

Bow Tie Braid, Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial.

You'll love this adorable braided hairstyle with bows made from hair!  This hairstyle would be great for school, recitals, weddings, flower girls, church, communions, and other special occasions.

This hair tutorial and basic concept was inspired by a photo we saw on an awesome Instagram account by @mylittlebraids. We thought the lace braids and feathered strands were so delicate and beautiful, we had to give it a try!  The elastic bows sitting centered between the 2 lace French braids look a lot like little "bow ties" to us.  So cute!  If you like this hairstyle, you may want to check out our "fishtail bow braid" from a few years ago which is also a very cute style using hair to make bow ties!

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial. (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We placed this bow tie braid in a headband type design, along the front / side of her head and ended the style in a hair wrapped side ponytail.  Of course, you could finish this hairstyle with a low side bun, or braid as well.  I'm thinking a pull through braid or elastic braid in the ponytail would be very cute.  Adding beads or jewels to the center of each bow braid would be so pretty as well.

Cute hairstyle, the bow tie braid.

The trick to getting this hairstyle to turn out well is taking tiny sections (micro braiding) as you are creating the initial braids.  If you want to use larger sections, you could always make 1 or 2 hair bows instead of 3 though!

Bow Braid Hairstyle Video Tutorial

A back view of the hair wrapped side ponytail......

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  •  Several temporary hair ties or clips to help section and hold the hair while you are working.
  • Around 3 tiny elastics (actual number will depend on how many bows you decide to make.) The tiny elastics we used in the center of our bows are "Goody" brand (affiliate.)
  • 1 medium size hair tie or clear elastic for the top of the ponytail.
  • Pomade, gel, wax, etc. to help prevent flyaways.  If your hair is prone to frizz, I would suggest braiding your hair wet for this hairstyle to help keep things smooth.
  • 1 Clear elastic or bobby pin for securing the hair around the elastic if you are making the "hair wrapped ponytail."
We always get questions about where we got our styling head when we use her for hair tutorials.  We found it on Amazon, similar to this one. (Affiliate.)

Elastic Wrap Double Hair Bow Hairstyle

Elastic wrap hair bow video tutorial

Today we are continuing on with our quick and easy DIY hairstyle series, which we announced a couple of weeks ago.  If you missed our first simple hairstyle in this series, it can be found at the following link: (Easy braid with a twist.)

This cute hair bow hairstyle would be great for school, work, summer, casual occasions, the beach, etc.  This style is easy enough to do on yourself and doesn't take much more time than just a standard ponytail.  And, the best part? No extra bobby pins or elastics are required to create this bow... just the elastic which was initially used to make the ponytail!

Easy hair bow ponytail video tutorial

As mentioned in our video tutorial below, you can choose how many of these accent bows to add to each elastic.  A single bow is cute, as well as a double (as shown in our photos) or even a triple bow!  And... if you want to make a "bubble ponytail" (by adding elastics spaced evenly down the hair in your ponytail) these fun bows can be worn all the way down the length of your ponytail.

Quick and easy hair bow video tutorial

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size elastic or hair tie. As you can see, we chose a colored elastic this time.  If you don't want the elastic to show, I would recommend using clear or something similar to your hair color.
  • I would recommend using product such as pomade, gel, hair wax etc. (especially if your hair is prone to frizz or flyaways.)

Cascading Bows Ponytail Hairstyle

A cute and girly hairstyle.
cascading bows ponytail video tutorial

This tutorial features bows made from hair, cascading down a ponytail.

The basic idea for our video today is based off of some cute hair bows that we first saw on an Instagram account called "kares84." If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you may remember seeing the photo we are referring to (as we shared it a few weeks ago on our pages.) In the original hairstyle, the bows were utilized in a "French bubble braid."  We decided to try them out cascading down a regular ponytail for our video today.

cute hair bow in a ponytail video tutorial

Of course, you can add as many bows as you want to your style (some of this will depend on the length of hair you are working with.)  As shown in our tutorial below, you can stop at just one (which our princess has named the "eyeglasses ponytail") or you can add several bows down the length of your ponytail.  Also, the strand of hair in the middle of the bow is optional and can be left out or added in, for two different looks.

As shown below... the "eyeglasses ponytail." ;)  This is The Princess's favorite variation of this style!
"eyeglasses" ponytail hairstyle

I think incorporating these bows would make such a cute hairstyle for a flower girl or other special occasion. And really, they are not time consuming to create, so I could see this working as a hairstyle for school mornings... when you want something more than just a standard ponytail.

ponytail with cascading bows

Supplies needed to create this look:
  • 1 elastic for the top of the ponytail, as well as 1 small elastic for each bow.  (Depending on how you finish each bow, you may need one more elastic to secure the end.)
  • Gel, pomade, finishing hairspray (optional)

Fishtail Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle

An "accessorized" fishtail braid!
#fishtail bow tie braid hairstyle tutorial

This week we are featuring another cute back to school hairstyle idea, the "fishtail bow tie braid," and I think you will be surprised at how easy (and durable) this one is!

This fun bow braid really doesn't take any more time (or effort) to complete than a regular fishtail braid does, but adds something special and unique to an otherwise standard braid.  This braid is casual enough for every day wear (ie school and work) but could also be worn for more formal or special occasions, especially when "fancy" accessories are added!

fishtail bow tie side braid hairstyle

You can wear this braid plain, or with some "hair jewelry" as shown (which really makes the "bow ties" stand out in my opinion.)  We purchased the jewels displayed in our video below at our local craft store, and then used a hot glue gun to attach them to the top/side of a miniature bobby pin.  I have seen similar accessories available for purchase in beauty supply stores (if you would rather buy them ready to wear.)  Jewels, beads, or tiny flowers would all be darling finishing touches in the center of these hair bows.

fishtail braid with bows, back to school hairstyle idea

This braid can be worn as a low side braid (like we did here.) Or if you prefer, you can center the braid at the nape of the neck, or place an elastic at the top of the braid, creating a ponytail or pigtails.  Of course, you can space these bows out however you wish.  If you want to add just one bow to your braid, or many, it is up to you!

Supplies needed:
  • One small elastic to tie the braid off at the bottom.
  • Hair jewels, beads, flowers, etc. to place in the center of each bow (optional.)

Woven Half Up Hairstyle With Bow

A basket weave braid, and a bow made from hair!
Woven half up bow hairstyle tutorial
For our hairstyle tutorial this week, we have combined some basket weaving with a hair bow to create an adorable half up hairstyle. This style would be cute for a Prom, Homecoming, Flower Girl, Wedding, Communion, Easter Sunday, etc.
Bow made from hair with curls
If you have been following our hair blog for awhile, you may recognize this weaving technique. It is actually from one of our all time favorite styles that we posted way back in 2009, and something that we still use quite often for special occasions.  Every time the Princess wears this type of weaving in her hair, she always gets lots of compliments and attention.  I'm sure you will too!
Basket weave braid with hair bow
In the past when she has worn this woven half ponytail, we have found that the weaving does not hold up very well throughout the day.  In our video tutorial below, we show how to add a braid underneath the weaving to help remedy this problem.  The Princess actually wore this hairstyle to an event a few weeks ago, and the style held up great with the added braid!
Cute woven hair bow hairstyle
Supplies Needed:
  • Several small hair elastics (clear or similar to her hair color work best.)
  • Several bobby pins
  • Weaving tool.  (A topsy tail, large craft needle, or design weaver will work.)  If you do not have any of these objects, it is possible to do the weaving without... but it is more difficult. The tool we used to weave her hair is called a "Design Weaver" & is made by Scunci.  We purchased ours at Walgreens.

(1 Elastic) Bow Made From Hair, Easy Hairstyles

How to make a hair bow with hair using only one elastic!
how to make a hair bow using only one elastic
You have probably all seen some type of bow out of hair, as many fun variations of this style are all over Pinterest, Youtube, Instagram, etc.  Some know this hairstyle as the "Lady Gaga hairbow," or the "Hello Kitty hairbow." But, we recently came upon a new EASY way of making a "hair bow" and wanted to share it with you!

We actually stumbled upon this technique by accident.  For a quick school hairstyle one morning, we were using a topsy tail to flip the top of the princess's ponytail under... and accidentally stuck the end of the flipping tool through one strand of the elastic on the way through.  As you will see in our video below... this was the start of a new bow!
bow made from hair tutorial, one elastic
We absolutely love this feminine style, as it is great for many occasions and only takes a few minutes to create.  You could make the bow using all of your hair at the top of a ponytail like we did, or you could make a half up style if you wanted to.  This hairstyle is casual enough for every day (such as school or work) but could also be worn for more elegant occasions such as church, a wedding, Prom, Homecoming, Valentine's Day, or other dance / date.

Supplies needed:

1 cloth covered elastic... yep that's it!!

1 Elastic Hair Bow Video Tutorial:

We opted to add a few curls to the ends of the ponytail using our curling wand when we were done (for a little more pizazz.)  This hairstyle will work best on medium length to long hair, wavy, or straight.

Fishtail Braid Bow Ponytail Hairstyle Tutorial

A Diagonal Fishtail Braid and a Bow Made From Hair.
The "Fishtail Bow Braided Hairstyle."

(Pinterest Hair ~ How To)
Fish bone braid bow ponytail hairstyle tutorial
hairstyle picture courtesy google images

I'm guessing you guys have seen the hairstyle photo in the picture above (on the bottom.)  This darling fishtail braid with a bow hair style has been floating around on Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram (etc) for awhile now and seems to be everywhere! "How to" instructions for this style have been requested numerous times by you guys and we finally got around to making a tutorial!

hairstyle tutorial, fishtail braid bow

There are several different ways you could recreate this hairdo, and of course, I'm not exactly sure how the original style was made. This is just our interpretation on how to do it.  We have actually done this style a few times since we filmed the tutorial, and have made a few adjustments to make it look more like the original.  As you can see in the photo above, the fishtail braid sort of "disappears" behind the bow (instead of extending past the bow as seen in the original.)  In our video tutorial below, we show how to fix that.  Also, for a better looking fishtail braid (or fishbone) you will want to use very thin strands as you are braiding, and stretch out the edges of the braid as you are going.

ponytail with bow made from hair
We are loving the cute bohemian look of this hairstyle. What could be cuter than a diagonal fishtail braid, a side ponytail, and a bow made from hair? ;)  Such a girly, feminine hair style!  I'm thinking this is even festive enough to be a cute Christmas Hairstyle.
fishtail braided bow ponytail tutorial
And wow, I just noticed.... look at the princess's long hair! I am amazed at how fast it has grown. We have actually had a few questions on Youtube recently regarding "how to get long hair" and "long hair tips." Keep in mind, I am not a "hair expert" and everyone's hair/situation is different.  I don't think there is really any magic formula for making hair grow faster.  ;) But at some point, maybe we will do a video showing our hair care routine.

How to, Video Tutorial: Fishtail Braided Bow Hairstyle: Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

I'm a little disappointed because in the photo below, this hairstyle actually came out quite well..... And then when I pulled the picture I took up on my computer, I noticed that the flash on our camera kind of made the end of the fishtail braid (on the right side of the hair bow) just sort of blend in with the ponytail and look more like a fuzzy mess at the side of the pony! I even tried changing the photo over to sepia, but it didn't really help.  Ugh.

Braided Bow Hairstyle

The Braided Hair Bow Hairstyle
Inspired by

Cute Bow Hairstyle

The basic concept of this "braided bow" is inspired by a darling hairstyle "the subtle bow" which can be found on our friend Mindy's blog, We have also seen several cute "shoelace" type hair bows on Pinterest lately. Bows made from hair (including the popular Lady Gaga Hairbow) seem to be very trendy right now! The princess loves wearing hairstyles featuring these cute bows, but the problem we have had is keeping the bow intact... especially all day at school. We decided to try creating a bow made with braids to see what it would look like (thinking it might be more sturdy.) We really like how easy and quick this cute hairstyle is, and how well it held up.  We have found this bow to stay in place all day long with just 2 bobby pins!

After making the braided bow, we added a few curls with our curling iron (to just the top layer of her hair.)  The method we used can be found at this link:  How to make curling iron ringlets.

This hairstyle is casual enough for every day wear and would be a darling back to school hairstyle, maybe even a hairstyle for picture day?  I could also see this working for a special occasion such as a flower girl, church, recital, etc.

Braided Bow Hairstyle With Curls

If you prefer not to leave your daughter's hair down, you could add a quick side ponytail for another variation. Now that the Princess's hair is getting longer, it really helps cut down on tangles and knots if we keep her hair somewhat tied back (especially on windy days.)
