Bow Tie Braid, Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial.

You'll love this adorable braided hairstyle with bows made from hair!  This hairstyle would be great for school, recitals, weddings, flower girls, church, communions, and other special occasions.

This hair tutorial and basic concept was inspired by a photo we saw on an awesome Instagram account by @mylittlebraids. We thought the lace braids and feathered strands were so delicate and beautiful, we had to give it a try!  The elastic bows sitting centered between the 2 lace French braids look a lot like little "bow ties" to us.  So cute!  If you like this hairstyle, you may want to check out our "fishtail bow braid" from a few years ago which is also a very cute style using hair to make bow ties!

Bow Tie Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial. (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We placed this bow tie braid in a headband type design, along the front / side of her head and ended the style in a hair wrapped side ponytail.  Of course, you could finish this hairstyle with a low side bun, or braid as well.  I'm thinking a pull through braid or elastic braid in the ponytail would be very cute.  Adding beads or jewels to the center of each bow braid would be so pretty as well.

Cute hairstyle, the bow tie braid.

The trick to getting this hairstyle to turn out well is taking tiny sections (micro braiding) as you are creating the initial braids.  If you want to use larger sections, you could always make 1 or 2 hair bows instead of 3 though!

Bow Braid Hairstyle Video Tutorial

A back view of the hair wrapped side ponytail......
hair wrapped ponytail with braids

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  •  Several temporary hair ties or clips to help section and hold the hair while you are working.
  • Around 3 tiny elastics (actual number will depend on how many bows you decide to make.) The tiny elastics we used in the center of our bows are "Goody" brand (affiliate.)
  • 1 medium size hair tie or clear elastic for the top of the ponytail.
  • Pomade, gel, wax, etc. to help prevent flyaways.  If your hair is prone to frizz, I would suggest braiding your hair wet for this hairstyle to help keep things smooth.
  • 1 Clear elastic or bobby pin for securing the hair around the elastic if you are making the "hair wrapped ponytail."
We always get questions about where we got our styling head when we use her for hair tutorials.  We found it on Amazon, similar to this one. (Affiliate.)

Hairstyles For School, The Palm Tree Bubble Braid Tutorial

Palm tree bubble braid tutorial. Cute hairstyle for school.
A cute hairstyle for school! We're loving this half up braided hairstyle and hope you like it too.

Today's hair tutorial shows a unique twist on the ever popular and trendy "bubble braid."  We have shown accented bubble braids in the past, one of our favorites being the "interlocking bubble braid." For today's video tutorial we have taken 3 micro braids and braided them together to create the center section running through our bubbled strands.  We thought the finished texture of our braids ending up looking a lot like the bark of a palm tree!

Palm Tree Bubble Braid Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the tutorial directly on youtube.)

This braid can be made in a half up hairstyle (as shown,) in a ponytail, or you can add the sides of her hair into each section as you work your way down (like a french braid.)

3 More Cute Half Up Bun Hairstyle Tutorials

3 braided half up bun hairstyle tutorials

Today we are sharing 3 of our favorite half up bun or top knot hairstyles.  Add 4 more cute half ups from last week, and you have an entire week of styles!

These particular 3 styles are some of my daughter's favorites at the moment.  We love that these braids are intricate looking, yet still fairly simple to create.  Half up bun styles in general are very popular and trending right now and there are so many variations that you could do!  We actually have a huge running list of half ups that we love and wear regularly. We may have to make a part 3 of this series at some point.

Half up bun hairstyle variations included in this video:

1. Crossed dutch braid cornrows

2. Topsy tail flipped ponytails

3. Triple feather braid

Of course, these styles can be finished with any type of bun you would like.  We choose to do a stretched out braided bun, similar to a rosette or flower braid for all 3 hairstyles.  You could also make a messy bun, twisted bun, sock bun, etc. if you prefer.

These hairstyles would be great for both casual and more formal occasions. And since we are only using the top section of hair, these styles should work for fairly short hair as well as long.   Yay!

Supplies needed to recreate these hairstyles:
  • Medium or small clear hair elastics
  • Bobby Pins
  • Topsy tail (affiliate) for hairstyle #2
  • Finishing hairspray or gel

Criss Cross Woven Ponytail Hairstyle

Quick and easy ponytail hairstyle. Criss cross woven twists.
We're loving this cute and easy ponytail hairstyle! No braiding skills required, just grab some hair elastics and you are good to go!

This criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle is inspired by a photo we saw on Instagram by "vlechtjesezo." The original style featured single banded crosses down the length of the ponytail.  We thought it was such a super cute and creative style! We decided to try our own take on it by adding 2 strand crosses, with woven twists.  We love how intricate looking the pattern turned out, although it was still fairly quick, easy, and fun to create.

This hairstyle would be great for many occasions: school, work, the beach, recitals, communions, dances, sports, church, etc.

Criss Cross Woven Ponytail Hairstyle Video Tutorial:
(Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle, video instructions.

You can add as many woven sections as you would like to your ponytail (depending on the length of hair you are working with.) I think just one section would be cute as an accent at the top of your ponytail, or you can go to the very ends of her hair.  As you can see, we went down about 3/4 the length of her ponytail with our twists.

Hair tutorial, criss cross woven ponytail hairstyle for school.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size hair tie for the top of the ponytail.
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on how many sections you decide to twist and weave.)
  • Gel, pomade, hair spray, or other product to help control flyaways.

This style will work best with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair.

Elastic Braid Twist Heart Hairstyle Tutorial For Valentine's

Elastic braid twist heart hair tutorial. Cute and easy Valentine's Day Hairstyle.
Looking for Valentine's Day hairstyles? You'll love this beautiful twisted heart, elastic braid, romantic half-up hairstyle.

This easy hairstyle would be perfect for school, work, Valentine's Day parties and dances, weddings, and other special or casual occasions. And the best part?  You don't even need to know how to braid!  This style was created by using a series of ponytails (which we call an elastic braid) to create a "french braid effect" without having to braid at all.

Elastic Braid Twist Heart Hairstyle, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We used a simple twisting technique to place the heart in this hairstyle.  If you would rather braid or rope twist each half of the heart for a slightly different look, feel free to do that instead.  Also, as mentioned in our video tutorial (above) we chose to leave this as a half up, half down hairstyle. But, you could keep going with the elastic braid (or any other type of braid) to the ends of her hair, or add a ponytail, or bun at the bottom of the heart for more of an updo look if you desire.

Hanging Heart Ponytail

Quick and easy heart hairstyle for Valentines. Hanging heart ponytail tutorial.

Our hair tutorial this week is a cute and easy heart ponytail hairstyle!

I can't believe it is already time to start thinking about Valentine's hairstyles for 2017.  Over the years, Valentines and heart hairstyles have been some of our favorite styles to create.  If you are looking for heart hairstyle ideas, we have more than we can count on our website, some of them dating way back to 08'!  You can check those out here: Heart Hairstyles

We love that this hanging heart ponytail is quick and easy with no special braiding skills required. Perfect for school mornings!

Hanging Heart Ponytail Video Tutorial:  Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

Cute heart hairstyle. Hanging heart ponytail.

Easy heart hairstyle tutorial. Hanging heart ponytail video.

Although we demonstrated this technique showing one single heart in a ponytail, you could add more than one heart if you choose, or add this heart as an accent to a variety of different style options such as a half up, etc.  This style would not only be cute for Valentine's day, but would also make an adorable flower girl hairstyle for a wedding.

You might remember a style we posted a couple of years ago called the "heart knot hairstyle" which has been quite popular on social media.  The heart shown in our tutorial today is made using a similar technique, although the knots forming the top of the heart are tied in a slightly different way.  In our opinion, we prefer the way this "hanging heart" is shaped (with a more distinct point where the halves of the heart meet in the center.)

(Comparison photo below with the "heart knot" on the left and the "hanging heart" on the right.)

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • 2 small hair elastics to create the heart
  • 1 medium or large hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Pomade, gel, or other product to help control flyaways

Easy Bubble Braid Christmas Tree Hairstyle Tutorial

Easy bubble braid Christmas tree hair tutorial
Quick and easy bubble braid Christmas tree hairstyle.  A last minute holiday hair idea!

Our Christmas tree braid tutorial this week is probably the easiest Christmas hairstyle we have done to date!  To create this braided Christmas tree, we have utilized a "floating bubble braid" technique which we first saw on Instagram by "pr3ttygirl79." And combined it with a simple half up Christmas tree braid hairstyle idea which we recently saw on "babesinhairland." As shown in our video tutorial (below) the looped strands from the bubble braid are stretched out along each side of the braid in the center, gradually getting larger as we work our way down, to form an outline of a Christmas tree.

This hairstyle would be adorable for a Christmas party, school, Christmas day, Christmas Eve, meeting Santa, holiday photos, an ugly sweater contest, opening presents... along with many other holiday activities.

Bubble Braid Christmas Tree Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Quick and easy holiday hairstyle, the bubble braid Christmas tree

Cute Christmas tree braid hairstyle tutorial

Supplies needed to create this easy Christmas tree hairstyle:
  • 4 medium (or small) hair elastics. As you can see, we used green, you could also use red, white, brown, clear, etc.
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, or other product to help with flyaways and to keep your loops together and smooth.
  • An accessory for the top of your tree (optional.) A star, angel, snowflake, or other sparkly or festive clip would be cute.
To see more Christmas hair ideas, click on our Christmas hairstyles label.  (Including a snowflake hairstyle, classic hair wreath or halo braid, cookie cutter or ornament braid, candy cane hairstyles, holiday updos, and more!)

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, no matter how you celebrate.  See you all next week!

Elastic Design Half Up Hairstyle

Elastic design half up hairstyle tutorial

A decorated variation of the classic "half up" hairstyle, perfect for school and other occasions!

This elastic design half-up hairstyle is partially inspired by a cute updo hairstyle we saw on Instagram recently by "studiohilde." Lately my daughter has been wearing her hair mostly down with just her "bangs" pulled back for school, and we thought this would be a fabulous way to spice up her ordinary half up without putting in too much time or effort.

This style is easy enough to be a DIY, although your arms may tire of tying all of the little elastics, so it may be better if you have someone help you.  As mentioned in our video (below) you can really do any elastic pattern you want... this is just an example and the possibilities you could come up with are endless!  Of course, you can use a variety of different color combinations, or go for a more subtle look with clear elastics as well.

Elastic Design Half Up Hairstyle, Video Tutorial (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

This style is fairly versatile and can work will most hair types and lengths.  If your hair is shoulder length to medium length, you could make a smaller/shorter pattern (example below.)

Elastic design half up hairstyle for shoulder length hair too

Elastic design half-up hairstyle, video tutorial

Pretty elastic design half up hairstyle tutorial

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  •  Lots of small hair elastics. (We used Goody ouchless brand.)
  • Product such as pomade or gel to help prevent flyaways.
We started with some no-heat curls/waves by braiding her hair and leaving the braids in overnight.  This style would look cute with straight hair or with tighter curls as well.

As demonstrated below, you can stretch the design out as much or as little as you want for a slightly different look.

Elegant Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun

Elegant Christmas Tree Hairstyle Tutorial

This week we are kicking off the holiday season with a festive Christmas tree hairstyle!  And, I think this might be our favorite Christmas hairstyle that we have done to date.  We love how easy and simple this pretty updo style is to create, yet it looks so unique, cute, sweet, and elegant.  This X-mas hairstyle would be perfect for many occasions this holiday season: Christmas parties, meeting Santa, holiday photos, Christmas dinner, Christmas morning, holiday parades, school, church, recitals, concerts, Christmas shopping, making holiday treats, decorating the Christmas tree, making gingerbread men, a winter dance or wedding, etc.

Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

You can create any type of bun that you want at the top of the tree (a donut bun, sock bun, messy bun, braided bun, twisted bun, rolled bun, etc.)  We decided on a triple braided bun

Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle and Bun Video Tutorial

Of course, you can leave your tree "as is" or you can decorate it and make it more glamorous if you want.  A star or angel at the top would be beautiful, as well as ribbon, ornaments, glitter, gems, or even lights.

X-mas hairstyle! Christmas tree and bun tutorial.

Easy Christmas tree hairstyle tutorial.

You may remember a similar style we did on my little toddler niece several years ago as a "candy corn hairstyle" with the elastics on the side/top of her head going into a side ponytail. As mentioned in our video tutorial, this elastic tree positioned on the back of her head and bun combination is inspired by a "candy corn" hairstyle that has been trending on Instagram this Fall. The first thing I thought of when I saw this style was, not only is this adorable as a candy corn... but it would also make a fabulous Christmas tree! Many Instagramers have posted this candy corn hairstyle recently and I wanted to share a few awesome accounts that we saw it on: @pr3ttygirl79 @simplystranded @brownhairedbliss @twogirls_hairstyles @jespi09 @toddlerhairideas @prettyhstyle3029 @kares84 I know there are more and don't want to leave anyone out!  If you posted this style, feel free to leave your Instagram in the comments and we will check it out. :)

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small, green elastics (the amount you will need will depend on the size of tree you make. We used 9 green and 1 yellow for the star at the top.) The brand we used is "goody ouchless."
  • 1 ponytail holder, large enough to contain all of your hair.
  • 1 medium size, clear elastic to hold the braids before you make the bun.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Any optional accessories you want to decorate your tree with. (Decorative pins, gems, star clips, ornaments, ribbon, etc.

Kaleidoscope Braid Continuation, 2 in 1 Hairstyle Tutorial

Kaleidoscope loop and kaleidoscope braid comparison. Video tutorial for both ponytails.

Hey guys, this week we are building on a style we posted last month (the kaleidoscope loop pull-through ponytail.) We love the look of the elastics in the first ponytail, but wondered what it would look like with a braid running through the center of the knotted loops.  We ended up loving the unique and intricate design of the second braided ponytail. The day my daughter wore this hairstyle, she had several people stop and ask her how it was made! It can be our little secret that this braid is much easier than it looks.

Video instructions showing how to make both kaleidoscope ponytails: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

As shown in our video tutorial above, we decided to create our 2nd ponytail with a regular 3 strand braid, but you could do a fishtail braid instead if you prefer (which would be gorgeous.)

Kaleidoscope braid ponytail video tutorial, easier than it looks.

Gorgeous kaleidoscope braid. Easier than it looks. Video instructions.

Supplies needed to recreate these hairstyles:
  • 2 medium size hair ties or elastics (for the top and bottom of the ponytail.)
  • Several small elastics (the amount will depend on the length of your hair.)
  • Pomade, gel, hair wax, or other product to help with flyaways.
If you are planning on making the second ponytail, I would suggest using elastics that will easily slide out of your hair and to not get them too tight.  It will also help immensely if you are working with wet hair or if you add some product before you start.

Interlocking Floating Bubble Braid Hairstyle

Interlocking floating bubble braid video tutorial

Our hairstyle tutorial this week is partially inspired by a braid we saw on Instagram by @pr3ttygirl79 We took the original "floating bubble braid" and tried interlocking a second braid for a fun and different variation.  We love the intricate "swirly" design that was formed when the 2 braids came together.  So pretty!

This would be a cute back to school hairstyle for girls or teens.  If you prefer wearing your hair up for school, you could try making this braid in a ponytail, or you could pull all of her hair into a low bun, ponytail, or braid (after making the accent braids on top like we did.)

We love that this hairstyle looks unique, but is still super easy and fairly quick to create!

Interlocking Floating Bubble Braid Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Interlocking floating #bubblebraid #hairstyle tutorial

As mentioned in our video, if you would rather stick with one braid, it looks adorable alone! Here, we have wrapped a "floating bubble braid" around her head forming a crown braid look.

Crown braid hairstyle, floating bubble braid tutorial

And, an example of the style with a single accent braid.  So many different hairstyles could be made using this basic concept, the possibilities are endless!

Adorable accent braid, the floating bubble braid (video tutorial)

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on hair length.)
  • Pomade, gel (or other product) to help control flyaways.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull-Through Ponytail Hairstyle

Kaleidoscope loop, pull-through ponytail hairstyle tutorial.

This week's ponytail hairstyle is partially inspired by a photo we saw on Pinterest a few months ago, as well as a technique used in the half-up "heart knot hairstyle tutorial" we posted for Valentines Day a couple of years ago. We did change up the technique a little bit from the heart hairstyle for this ponytail, by bringing the strands under first (instead of over) while creating the loops.

This would be a great back to school hairstyle since it is fairly quick to do and so cute!  Because elastics are used to form the loops, this should hold up fairly well throughout the school day too. You could change the colors of the elastics to match your outfits, or use clear if you want a more subtle or "grown up" look.

Kaleidoscope Loop, Pull Through Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We thought the finished pattern on this ponytail ended up resembling something you would see while looking through a kaleidoscope!

Back to school hairstyle! Kaleidoscope loop pull through ponytail tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 hair tie for the top of the ponytail
  • Several small hair elastics (the amount will depend on the length of hair you are working with.)
Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, I would suggest creating this hairstyle using damp hair, or adding pomade, gel, wax, etc. before tying the knots and creating the loops (to help avoid flyaways.)

This should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, and possibly curly hair.  Of course, the longer hair you have, the more pattern you can create on your ponytail.

If you like this hairstyle, you might also like our "twisted edge fishtail braid." Check it out below!

Quilted Pull Through Braid Ponytail Tutorial

Quilted pull-through braid hairstyle, video tutorial.

This quilted pull-through ponytail is a variation of a style we posted last week (the multi strand pull through braid.) As mentioned in our video (below) the only difference between the 2 braids is the placement of the elastics, but as you can see.... the ponytails turn out completely different looking with this small change. (Comparison between the 2 braids below.)

Quilted pull through ponytail and multi strand pull through comparison.
(Quilted pull through ponytail on the left, multi strand ponytail on the right.)
Quilted Pull Through Braid Ponytail Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We love the 3d effect of this style.  If you try this braid, you will noticed the "quilted" pattern shows up along the front, sides, and back of the ponytail.  So fun!

Quilted pull-through ponytail, side view.

Quilted pull through braid side view.

This braid can be stretched out to add more volume and dimension to the style, or you can leave it "as is" like we did, (which also turns out quite voluminous.)  Of course, this pull through braid can be done in a high ponytail or low ponytail, as a side braid, or even as a half up hairstyle.

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • 1 medium size elastic or hair tie for the top of the ponytail.
  • Several medium/small clear elastics (the amount will depend on your hair length.)
  • Pomade, gel, or other product to help control flyaways.
This hairstyle would be great for sports, school, work, the beach, special occasions, or every day casual occasions.
