Easy Twist Updo Hairstyle

Easy twist updo hairstyle, video tutorial.

This low side bun or chignon hairstyle would be perfect for those days when you need to look nice, but don't have a lot of time. You could wear this twisted updo for many occasions including: A prom hairstyle, homecoming, church, recitals, weddings (bridal hairstyle or guests) communions, holiday gatherings, etc.

This pretty updo is so easy it could be a DIY hairstyle!  Check out our simple step-by-step hair tutorial showing how to create an elegant low side bun below:

Easy Twist Updo Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Although this style can be made to look quite fancy, you could also wear this bun for casual or everyday occasions as well.  This updo can be made to look smooth and sleek, or more relaxed and tousled, depending on the look you are going for. You could add some texture above your ponytail before you make the bun and frame your face with some wispy pieces if you are wanting a more bohemian looking style. You could even pull the twists apart a little more to make an adorable messy bun.  Along with formal occasions, I could see this being a cute casual hairstyle for school, work, or even the beach.

Easy updo hairstyle! Hair tutorial showing step by step instructions.

Hairstyle for prom, homecoming, weddings. Easy video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this updo hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size ponytail holder.  You will want to choose one that is stretchy, and strong.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Hairspray, gel, wax, etc.

I love that this style can be created with just one hair tie and a few bobby pins, and it literally only takes a few minutes to do! This hairstyle will work best with medium or long hair and most hair textures.

Topsy Tail Bubble Faux Hawk Tutorial, Dance Hairstyles

Topsy Tail Faux Hawk Tutorial, Hairstyles for Dance.

We hope you love this easy bubble faux hawk!  This hairstyle would be great for dance, cheer leading, gymnastics, sports, figure skating, school, Prom, church, etc.

My daughter is on a dance team and wears a faux hawk hairstyle regularly to competitions, so we have tried several different ways of creating this edgy look.  If you are looking for more dance hairstyle ideas, we actually have a past tutorial showing how to create a "messy bun faux hawk" as well as a "braided faux hawk with cornrow accents."

We are loving this topsy tail method since it is easy and fairly quick!

Topsy Tail Faux Hawk Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Over the years we have seen several variations of this trendy faux hawk hairstyle made using a topsy tail and have been wanting to try it.  A few of the hairstylists we were inspired by for this tutorial are listed below:

Confessions of a Hairstylist
styles_n_smiles
Two Little Girls Hairstyles
Annies Forget Me Knots

Edgy hairstyle for dance. Topsy tail faux haux video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several medium size hair elastics (the amount will depend on how many bubbled sections you plan to make in your faux hawk.
  • If you plan on using this hairstyle for dancing, sports (or anything active) I would suggest adding bobby pins to each looped section to help keep the style secure.
  • Topsy Tail. If you are needing a topsy tail (as shown in our tutorial) they can be found on Amazon (affiliate.)
  • You may have noticed that I styled her hair while it was damp in this video to achieve a smooth and sleek look on the sides of the style.  Depending on the texture of hair you are working with, it may work out better for you to style the hair dry using hair product to smooth the sides.

3 More Cute Half Up Bun Hairstyle Tutorials

3 braided half up bun hairstyle tutorials

Today we are sharing 3 of our favorite half up bun or top knot hairstyles.  Add 4 more cute half ups from last week, and you have an entire week of styles!

These particular 3 styles are some of my daughter's favorites at the moment.  We love that these braids are intricate looking, yet still fairly simple to create.  Half up bun styles in general are very popular and trending right now and there are so many variations that you could do!  We actually have a huge running list of half ups that we love and wear regularly. We may have to make a part 3 of this series at some point.

3 Favorite Half Top Knot Hairstyles, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Half up bun hairstyle variations included in this video:

1. Crossed dutch braid cornrows

Crossing cornrows half up bun hairstyle tutorial

2. Topsy tail flipped ponytails

Topsy tail top knot hairstyle tutorial

3. Triple feather braid

Triple feather braid top knot hairstyle tutorial

Of course, these styles can be finished with any type of bun you would like.  We choose to do a stretched out braided bun, similar to a rosette or flower braid for all 3 hairstyles.  You could also make a messy bun, twisted bun, sock bun, etc. if you prefer.

These hairstyles would be great for both casual and more formal occasions. And since we are only using the top section of hair, these styles should work for fairly short hair as well as long.   Yay!

Supplies needed to recreate these hairstyles:
  • Medium or small clear hair elastics
  • Bobby Pins
  • Topsy tail (affiliate) for hairstyle #2
  • Finishing hairspray or gel

Belle Hairstyle Tutorial, Beauty And The Beast Inspired

Belle Hair Tutorial, Beauty and the Beast inspired. Video instructions.
This Belle hair tutorial is inspired by Disney's new "Beauty And The Beast."  A beautiful half up hairstyle which is worn with the gorgeous yellow ball gown in the dancing scene with the Beast.

We are so excited for the new live action Beauty and the Beast Disney movie coming out on March 17, 2017. And we could not wait to film this hair tutorial! We have loved watching Emma Watson for years and think she will make the perfect Belle. (Our favorite Disney Princess!)

Belle Hair Tutorial, Elegant Half Up Bun Hairstyle: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Before filming this tutorial, we tried searching the internet for a clear picture of this hairstyle from an actual movie still shot, but were unsuccessful. (We only found blurry pics from the side or front and a very quick flash of the style in the official trailer.) So, this is our perceived rendition and not an exact replica.  Based off of the animated movie and books, seeing Belle at Disneyland, etc...  we know her classic style is a half up with curls, with some type of bun in the back, possibly featuring a yellow ribbon or gold hair accessory of some sort. Of course, although our minor details may not be spot on with the new movie, this hairstyle will definitely pass for Belle!  We can't wait to see the actual authentic details when we go watch this in the theater next month!

Gorgeous Belle hair tutorial. Half up bun hairstyle from Beauty and the Beast.

Beauty and the Beasty hairstyle tutorial. Emma Watson (Disney Belle) inspired.

This hairstyle is fairly easy to make (for a Disney Princess hairstyle) and would be great to go with a Princess Belle Halloween costume, a day at Disneyland or Disney world, a Disney Princess party, watching the Beauty and the Beast movie premiere, etc.

Supplies needed to recreate this glamorous hairstyle:
  • 3 small or medium hair elastics
  • Several bobby pins
  • Finishing hair spray
  • To create the voluminous bun for this style, we used our "Hollywood Half Up" accessory made by Scunci.  When we saw this tool at Walmart, we thought it would be perfect for helping to create Belle's hairstyle and it really was simple to use.  We have an older Belle hair tutorial showing another idea for making the bun from several years ago if you want to check that out. This Bell hairstyle could also be created by following the first few steps shown in our video, and then making a regular twisted, braided, or messy bun with the half ponytail and tying a yellow ribbon around it, or adding a gold clip or barrette (instead of using a bun maker like we did.)
  • The ringlet curls cascading underneath the bun were created using our 3/4 inch curling iron, starting at the the root.
  • A topsy tail (affiliate) is optional for creating this hairstyle, but does make it easier and can be used for many other styles as well. These can be found online and in some stores that sell hair accessories.

Elegant Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun

Elegant Christmas Tree Hairstyle Tutorial

This week we are kicking off the holiday season with a festive Christmas tree hairstyle!  And, I think this might be our favorite Christmas hairstyle that we have done to date.  We love how easy and simple this pretty updo style is to create, yet it looks so unique, cute, sweet, and elegant.  This X-mas hairstyle would be perfect for many occasions this holiday season: Christmas parties, meeting Santa, holiday photos, Christmas dinner, Christmas morning, holiday parades, school, church, recitals, concerts, Christmas shopping, making holiday treats, decorating the Christmas tree, making gingerbread men, a winter dance or wedding, etc.

Christmas Tree Hairstyle & Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

You can create any type of bun that you want at the top of the tree (a donut bun, sock bun, messy bun, braided bun, twisted bun, rolled bun, etc.)  We decided on a triple braided bun

Elastic Christmas Tree Hairstyle and Bun Video Tutorial

Of course, you can leave your tree "as is" or you can decorate it and make it more glamorous if you want.  A star or angel at the top would be beautiful, as well as ribbon, ornaments, glitter, gems, or even lights.

X-mas hairstyle! Christmas tree and bun tutorial.

Easy Christmas tree hairstyle tutorial.

You may remember a similar style we did on my little toddler niece several years ago as a "candy corn hairstyle" with the elastics on the side/top of her head going into a side ponytail. As mentioned in our video tutorial, this elastic tree positioned on the back of her head and bun combination is inspired by a "candy corn" hairstyle that has been trending on Instagram this Fall. The first thing I thought of when I saw this style was, not only is this adorable as a candy corn... but it would also make a fabulous Christmas tree! Many Instagramers have posted this candy corn hairstyle recently and I wanted to share a few awesome accounts that we saw it on: @pr3ttygirl79 @simplystranded @brownhairedbliss @twogirls_hairstyles @jespi09 @toddlerhairideas @prettyhstyle3029 @kares84 I know there are more and don't want to leave anyone out!  If you posted this style, feel free to leave your Instagram in the comments and we will check it out. :)

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Several small, green elastics (the amount you will need will depend on the size of tree you make. We used 9 green and 1 yellow for the star at the top.) The brand we used is "goody ouchless."
  • 1 ponytail holder, large enough to contain all of your hair.
  • 1 medium size, clear elastic to hold the braids before you make the bun.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Any optional accessories you want to decorate your tree with. (Decorative pins, gems, star clips, ornaments, ribbon, etc.

Spider Web Bun Hairstyle Tutorial

Halloween Hair, spiderweb bun tutorial. #halloween #spiderweb

This week we are showing another fun Halloween Hairstyle and this one might be our favorite so far!  We are loving this spider web bun / ponytail since it looks festive for Halloween, but isn't too over the top or crazy for teens, or even adults.  This spooky Halloween spiderweb hairstyle could be worn to school, for a Halloween party, a Halloween dance, a trip to the pumpkin patch, Oktoberfest, or as part of a costume for trick or treating.

Spider Web Bun, Video Tutorial: Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.

Spider web hairstyle for #Halloween. #Halloweenhair

Halloween hairstyle. Spider web bun ponytail. Video tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this spider web hairstyle:
  • We purchased the silver ribbon used to make our webbing at a local craft store.  You can use any color or type that you want. We have found that thinner ribbon works best for this style.  You could also use yarn or string if you prefer (which may lay flatter and be easier to sew in.)
  • The donut bun maker we used can be found in most stores that carry beauty supplies.  You can also find them online (affiliate.)
  • We purchased the plastic craft needle (shown in our tutorial above) at Walmart.  You could also use a regular sewing needle.
  • You will need 3 medium size hair elastics or hair ties to make the bun and several clips or temporary hair ties to hold your braids while you are working.
  • Of course if you wanted to take this style a step further, you could add a spider accessory to your web!  We have seen some plastic spider rings at the dollar store that would be perfect.  ;)

Eyeball Bun Hairstyle For Halloween Or Crazy Hair Day!

Eyeball bun hairstyle for Halloween or Crazy Hair Day

Hey guys, we are back with another fun HALLOWEEN HAIRSTYLE or CRAZY HAIR DAY idea for you today!  Depending on your Halloween costume, this eyeball bun would be perfect to go with a scary / creepy costume.... or with a funny / cute costume.  I could see this hairstyle working with many creative and unique DIY costume ideas actually:  A monster, zombie, witch, robot, alien, sea creature, swamp creature, etc. Or if you don't want to go "all out" dressing up, or aren't allowed to wear a full costume to school, you could just wear the eyeball bun by itself! We were thinking you could wear this bun and go as a "mom" because moms have eyes in the back of their heads, and those eyes would probably be bloodshot lol.

Eyeball Bun Hairstyle, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Eyeball Bun Hairstyle Tutorial For Halloween or Crazy Hair Day!

As shown in our tutorial, we started with a standard donut bun or sock bun, and it really doesn't matter how you make it, you just need a "roundish" bun to start with.  We have several videos and different methods on our YouTube channel already showing how to make these buns.  You can look at our donut bun playlist to see if there is one that would work for you.

Supplies needed to recreate this Halloween Hairstyle:
  • We used the "perfect bun" tool (affiliate) to make our bun, which can be found online or in stores.
  • You could also use a donut bun maker (affiliate.)
  • 2 medium size hair elastics or hair ties.
  • Several bobby pins
  • Hairspray or gel
  • We purchased our plastic eyeball and pipe cleaners at the dollar store, but I also found some online here: Plastic eyeballs (affiliate) and here: Pipe cleaners (affiliate.)
  • Hot glue gun
(If you don't have a bun maker tool, you could actually just use a rolled up sock with the toe cut out, or you could make a standard bun by wrapping your hair around the top of a ponytail and pinning it in place.)

Of course, if you would rather make 2 eyeballs on the back of your head, you could start with pigtails instead.  Or, you could stack 2 buns vertically, like a faux hawk.

Happy trick or treating!

Topsy Tail Bun Tutorial

Easy and quick topsy tail bun tutorial. Only one elastic and no bobby pins!
A quick and easy bun, perfect for dance or ballet!

A few weeks ago we saw this simple and beautiful bun while scrolling through Instagram on an account called "brownhairedbliss." As soon as we saw this "flip through topsy tail" technique, we knew we wanted to try it.  My daughter is a dancer, so dance hairstyles and ballet buns are a huge part of our life. ;)  Sometimes it can be a struggle to put all of her long hair up, and we get tired of our usual bun makers, donut buns, and sock buns.  A standard or braided bun (wrapped around the top of the ponytail) always requires using tons of bobby pins and elastics and can be a pain to take out.  So, we were super excited to see that this bun is quick and easy, and that it only requires using one ponytail holder and zero bobby pins!

Topsy Tail Bun Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

P.S. Watch to the end of the video to see how to take this bun out and for some tips and tricks. The topsy tail we used can be found on Amazon (affiliate) and in some stores.  The brand we use is "Conair."

Simple bun tutorial. Flip through topsy tail technique.

Quick and easy bun for ballet and dance. Topsy tail bun using no bobby pins.

She tested this bun one afternoon while doing all sorts of trampoline tricks, and it held up and stayed in extremely well (which is quite amazing considering it is only being held together with one hair tie.)

Of course, this bun isn't only for dancers.  This updo hairstyle could be worn for many casual occasions such as school, for sports, for cheer leading, gymnastics, to work, to the beach, etc.  This could also be worn for more formal occasions; church, weddings, prom, homecoming, communions, recitals, flower girls, etc.

Supplies needed to recreate this bun:
  • 1 hair tie, elastic, or ponytail holder. (You will want something sturdy that can handle all of your hair in a ponytail.)
  • Topsy tail tool. (Affiliate) The package we purchased contains 2 different sizes.  We used the smaller size.
  • Finishing hairspray, pomade, or gel (optional.)

2 Easy Hairstyles For School - Side Dutch Braid and Messy Bun Twist

2 Easy and Quick Back To School Hairstyles

This week we are adding 2 more styles to our "back to school hairstyles" collection! If you missed our video last week (showing 3 more school hairstyle ideas) you can find it here: 3 Easy Back To School Hairstyle Tutorials.

We love quick and easy hairstyles, buns, and braids for school mornings. Since it is "back to school time" for a lot of you, we wanted to share a few simple styles that my daughter frequently wears to school.  None of these hairstyles are super unique or extra special... but classic, cute, and fashionable styles that we use on a regular basis.  We are hoping these are even doable for those of you who do your own hair!

2 Back To School Hairstyles, Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

We have already filmed more of our "go to" hairstyles and will be posting them throughout the month of August, so be on the look out if you are wanting more quick and easy ideas for school hair!

Hairstyles included in this video:

#1 Classic Side Dutch Braid

Voluminous Side Dutch Braid Tutorial

Cute side dutch braid tutorial, for school

#2 Messy Bun Twist Hairstyle (Inspired by a tutorial we saw on "8 passengers" family vlog channel.) Depending on what you wear and how you want this bun to look, you could dress it up or down.  I could see this working as a fancy updo for Prom... or as an every day casual school hairstyle.

Cute and easy "messy bun" tutorial

Easy twisted bun tutorial.

Both this voluminous side Dutch braid and messy bun twist would be great for teens, girls, or even busy moms. Both styles should work with long hair, medium hair, straight hair, wavy hair, or curly hair.

Supplies needed to recreate these looks:

Side dutch braid:

  • 1 medium size, clear elastic
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)
Messy bun twist:
  • 1 hair tie (large enough to make a ponytail with all of your hair)
  • Either 1-2 hair elastics, or several bobby pins (depending on how you choose to finish and secure the bun.)
  • Finishing hairspray (optional)

Pull Through Woven Bun Updo Hairstyle

Pull through woven bun hairstyle tutorial.

In this week's hairstyle tutorial we are showing yet another variation of the "multi strand pull through braid ponytail" which we posted a few weeks ago. While working with this braid, we noticed the pretty "sideways fishtail" design that was created when each layer of the ponytail was opened up and turned inside out and thought this woven pattern would be beautiful incorporated into the center of a bun.

This updo has an elegant look to it and would be pretty for a Prom, wedding, Homecoming, recital, communion, church, dance, figure skating, etc.

Video tutorial showing how to create this glamorous pull-through woven bun updo:  (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Pretty bun hairstyle, the pull through woven updo.

Glamorous bun made using a pull through braid technique.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 1 medium size hair tie or elastic for the top of the ponytail.
  • 2 clear elastics to help hold in layers while you are rolling up the bun (optional.)
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Pomade, gel, finishing hairspray, etc. (optional.)
We chose to finish this style using a "rolled bun" technique and pinned it into place using bobby pins. If you are working with hair that is on the thinner side, or shorter hair, you may want to use a bun maker instead for more volume.

I remembered seeing something kind of similar on a fellow hair vlogger "sweetheart hair designs" instagram account a few months ago and went digging for their photo after I filmed this tutorial to look at their bun again.  Our hairstyles turned out quite different from each other but the concept is very similar, so if you like this style... you should go check out their woven bun as well!

P.S. Yes, this is the third week in a row we have used this braid! I thought it was just so beautiful, so I wanted to do a few things with it.  I promise we will be posting something different next week.  ;)

Messy Bun Faux Hawk For Long Hair

Messy bun faux hawk for long hair. Dance hairstyle tutorial.

I'm sure many of you have seen this "messy bun faux hawk" hairstyle at dance competitions and recitals, figure skating events, gymnastics meets, cheerleading, and other special occasions. It is quite popular and trendy right now. You may have even worn it yourself!  It's such a cute and edgy hairstyle, while looking formal and polished at the same time. This style is "high fashion" and really adds to the look of a costume and dance routine.  But, as I mentioned in our video (below).... when I found out this was the hairstyle my daughter was assigned to wear for her dance team competitions this year, I was a little worried.  As some of you with long hair probably know, messy buns can be a struggle!  And with this hairstyle, you not only have to make 1 messy bun, you need to make at least 3!  There are quite a few tutorials of this style online already, but I did not see any for super long hair. So, after some trial and error, we finally found a method for making our buns that works ALMOST every time and we wanted to share it with all of our "long haired" subscribers.

Messy Bun Faux Hawk Video Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

Messy bun faux hawk hairstyle video tutorial.

Pretty and edgy hairstyle for dance. Messy bun faux hawk tutorial.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • 7 medium size, clear elastics. We used Goody brand ouchless elastics (affiliate.) You will need 9 if you decide to make 4 buns instead of 3.
  • Lots of bobby pins. Be sure to secure the buns really well if you are using this hairstyle for dancing. The bobby pins we use are from Sally Beauty Supply (affiliate) and they hold extremely well.
  • Hairspray, gel, pomade, or other product to keep the sides of your style smooth and free of flyaways.
I would recommend cutting the elastics out when you are done with this style (instead of trying to unwrap them.) In our experience, it saves a lot of trouble, time, pain, and untangling.  ;)

P.S. Luckily, messy buns are supposed to be, well... messy.  So, don't worry too much about getting things absolutely perfect while making this hairstyle. Ends popping out, part lines not quite straight, and buns and aren't symmetrical are going to be ok. The messiness is part of the charm!

P.S.S. This hairstyle isn't only for dance.  I think this faux hawk would be adorable with just the right prom dress or homecoming dress.  It could also work with certain Halloween costumes or even as an updo for church, weddings, or other formal occasions.

This method for making a messy bun can also be used for making a quick "top knot" hairstyle, which we recently showed in our "7 easy hairstyles for school" video.  You can check that out here.
