5 Strand Waterfall Braid

How To Five Strand Waterfall Braid Tutorial

5 strand waterfall braid video tutorial

A beautiful and intricate waterfall braid using 5 strands of hair instead of the standard 3 strands! This technique creates a unique woven effect where the braid lies, along with the familiar cascading strands hanging below (a look which has made the fall through braids such popular hairstyles.)

Five strand watefrall braid video tutorial

We have done several "non standard" waterfall braid tutorials on our hairstyling site recently, including a fishtail braid, a twist braid, and now a 5 strand braid. Feel free to check out the other two variations if you haven't already!

Unique waterfall braid

This plait is actually quite advanced and can be difficult to master at first.  It's probably one of  the more difficult braids we have posted here on our hair blog. But, I don't want to discourage you.  It's just so beautiful, I believe it's worth the effort.  ;)  Like most braids (and other non hair related things in life) after a little practice... it's really not so bad!

Half of this next picture turned out blurry.. and I'm not sure why.  Darn!  I tried to fix it, even trying black and white, but  was unsuccessful.  Anyway, she is so excited to have such long hair again.  She has been hoping to be able to grow her hair out to her waist.  Almost there!

Hope you enjoyed. We would love to see pictures of this one on our facebook page if you try it. And as always, feel free to pin and share!

Checkerboard French Braid Hairstyle

The Checkerboard French Braid
(How to 5 Strand Braid With Ribbon)

5 strand french braid with ribbon
A few weeks ago we posted a fun checkerboard braid hairstyle.  This is a follow-up tutorial showing how to turn that regular braid into a french braid.  This is probably one of the more difficult plaits we have posted.... but completely doable with practice!  I would suggest mastering the regular checkerboard braid before attempting this french braid variation, as it will be much easier if you already have the regular braid down. (You can find the video tutorial for the regular braid by clicking here: Checkerboard braid video.)

The Princess has been loving this braid, and has worn this hairstyle several times over the past few weeks. Depending on your preference, this braid can be modified to look quite different with a few slight changes. As shown in the hairstyle photo above, this braid can be made with damp or wet hair, for a sleek, neat, and slicked down look.  Or, you can braid the hair while just slightly damp or dry and then stretch out the edges for a more voluminous, messy, or relaxed look (as shown in the photo below.) If you are unsure of how to stretch the strands of the braid, we have a video tutorial showing how to do that here:  How to stretch a braid.

For another variation, this braid can be made without using ribbon as well!  Just substitute the 2 pieces of ribbon for 2 strands of hair (for a total of 5 strands) and then follow the braiding pattern shown in our video...  This will create a lovely 5 strand french braid.

Checkerboard French Braid Video Tutorial:

We opted for a diagonal braid across the back of her head this time.  Of course, this braid can be made in a variety of cute hairstyles.  We would love to see your creations using this braid.  Feel free to post your hairstyling photos to our facebook page any time!

Checkerboard Braid Hairstyle

A 5 Strand Braid With Ribbon
checker board braid

This fun "checkerboard braid" is actually just a standard 5 strand braid with ribbon strategically placed to form a woven checkerboard pattern. This reminds me of a princess hair style you might see at a Renaissance Faire!  And, although this hairstyle is quite intricate looking... it's really not that time consuming.  It will take a bit of practice to get the pattern of the braid down, but after the initial struggle, this braid can be formed quite quickly and easily.  I'm thinking this would be a darling back to school hairstyle. Many many cute hairstyles could be created using this unique braid. The Princess received sooo many comments and compliments the day she wore this out.  I'm guessing you will too!   ;)

You will need ribbon with a "stiffer" finish to create the flat woven look we are going for here.  Also, the width of the ribbon you use will make a big difference in how the braid turns out.  (You don't want the ribbon to be too thin or too wide.)  I would suggest finding ribbon that is about 1/2 inch wide and rigid (or unflexible.)

This plait can also be made into a french braid/dutch braid by bringing sections of hair in with the outer strands as you are braiding.  We have already had quite a few comments under this video on our Youtube Hairstyling Channel asking for the french braided version of this braid, so we created one here:  Five strand french braid with ribbon.

PS: One thing I noticed while creating this hairstyle, is that this braid seems to "eat up" quite a bit of hair as you are plaiting.  (Meaning that you will need fairly long hair to make a braid of decent length.)  This is a great hairstyle for long hair but probably not the best one for our short haired gals.  If your hair is on the shorter side, you might try the french braid version though.  Since you are continually adding new hair to the braid while french braiding, you could make the length go a little further that way.

5 Strand Ribbon Braid

5 strand braidIs it just me? I love seeing ribbons in hairstyles for little girls!multi strand ribbon braid Some of you may have already tried the 5 strand braid that we posted awhile back. This is just a fun way to spice it up a bit. I've also noticed it helps to add ribbons to a braid when you're working with hair that is on the thinner side. The ribbons make the braid look and feel thicker.
