4th Of July Hairstyle, Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist

4th of July Hairstyle Tutorial. Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist. #fourthofjuly

A cute and patriotic hairstyle for the fourth of July! These twisted ribbon infinity braids look so cool, I'm sure you will get lots of compliments!! This hairstyle would be great for a 4th of July parade, watching fireworks, a barbecue, or any other fun festivities your family participates in as you celebrate independence day.

Infinity Braid Ribbon Twist, 4th of July Hairstyle Tutorial: (Click here to watch the video directly on YouTube.)

This hairstyle tutorial is inspired by 2 similar photos we saw on Instagram by these awesome hair accounts:
@flower.braids and @tojashair

To create these "3 strand infinity braids" or "figure 8 braids" we have taken a length of ribbon and woven it around 3 strands of hair.  You can make these braids with as many sections of hair as you would like.  The more strands you add, the thicker and more intricate the braids will be.  These 2 ribbon braids were then loosely twisted around each other to create a fun pop of color and accent on the side of her hair.

We used red and white ribbon, since we were going for a patriotic 4th of July hairstyle look.  If you have time to add a 3rd braid with blue ribbon, you could braid the red, white, and blue braids together, which would look amazing! Of course, this doesn't have to be just a 4th of July hairstyle. You can use any color of ribbons that you would like, and if you don't live in the U.S. you could substitute the ribbon for your own country's colors! This hairstyle would be great for many special occasions including holidays, team sports and activities, school pride day, etc.

Cute ribbon hairstyle for the 4th of July.

4th of July hairstyle tutorial. #4thofjuly

We actually have an old tutorial showing a 2 strand version of this braid, which was one of our first (and quite honestly cringeworthy) videos made on this blog over 7 years ago! Also from our 2011 archives, we have a 3 strand ribbon ponytail using this same braiding technique if you want to check that one out.

Supplies needed to recreate this hairstyle:
  • Ribbon.  About quadruple the length of each braid you are intending to make.
  • Small elastics to tie off your braids.
As mentioned in our video, although these braids look fabulous... they are quite time consuming.  I would plan on about 10 minutes per braid (depending on how long your are making the braid and how many strands you use, etc.)  I think the end result is worth the time and effort, although I would probably save this one for special occasions!

Ribbon Swirl Bun Hairstyle Tutorial

Ribbon swirl bun video tutorial

We are excited about our hair tutorial this week, as this style is quite unique and beautiful!  It reminds me a little bit of our pinwheel bun which is one of our all time favorite hairstyles.  ;)

"The Princess" is planning on wearing this "ribbon swirl bun" for her 4th of July hairstyle this year.  Although this is a great holiday hairstyle, it really can be worn for many different occasions. Of course, you can use any color of ribbon, yarn, etc. to accent your bun and change up the look.  For example; elegant sliver or white ribbon would make more of a sophisticated or glamorous updo which would be pretty for a wedding, prom, or other formal occasion.  Brightly colored ribbon is going to stand out and "pop" more for a festive and fun look. I think this hairstyle would also be adorable for Christmas time (using red or green ribbon.) The swirling design reminds me of a lollipop!  If you want to add more than one color, you can definitely do that as well. Or if you prefer not to use ribbon at all, 2 strands of hair could be used to accent the bun instead. If you are a dancer or gymnast, this style would be great for dance recitals and competitions!

Gorgeous ribbon swirl bun hairstyle

As mentioned in our video (below) there are several different methods you could use to finish this bun.  We chose to keep things simple for our tutorial. But, if you are wanting something more intricate, you could braid, twist, roll and pin, or even make a starburst (or never ending) braid with the remaining ends!

We love the waterfall ribbon twist braid (which was used to create the swirl design in this bun) and have used it in several other hairstyles on our blog.  The "waterfall ribbon twist rainbow ponytail" and the "Aztec carousel braid" are a couple of examples of how this braid can be utilized in a hairstyle.

Ribbon swirl bun for the 4th of July

Supplies needed to recreate this look:
  • Bun maker. The bun maker or "hair donut" shown in our tutorial can be found in most beauty supply stores and discount stores.  I have actually even seen them at the dollar store from time to time.  If you do not have one, you can cut the toes out of a sock and roll it up to achieve a similar tool.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • Ribbon.  The ribbon we used was 1/4 inch thick and about 4 feet long.
  • Finishing hair spray, pomade, wax, or gel.  (Optional.)

This hairstyle should work with long hair, medium length hair, straight hair, wavy hair, and possibly curly hair.

Star Hairstyle Tutorial

Braided Star Video Tutorial, Cute 4th Of July Hairstyle

This star hairstyle for the 4th of July has been a yearly tradition at our house since our daughter was 3 years old!  I'm guessing some of you have the same tradition?  We have noticed over the past couple of years that this braided star hairstyle has become very popular on social media as well as in "real life" for many little girls on the fourth of July. This style is perfect for 4th of July parades, watching fireworks, family barbecues, swimming, etc. Although I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials on the internet already, we wanted to add this fun style to our "how to" video collection as well. After all, it is one of our favorite holiday hairstyles!

We originally did a pictorial for a rope braided variation this style on our website way back before we even did YouTube in 2009.  And then added a "glowing star version" in 2011.  But we somehow have not gotten around to filming a video for the original standard braided star pigtails until this year.  Better late than never, right?

Now that "the Princess" is getting a little bit older, she is planning on a more "grown up" look for her 4th of July hair. (Spoiler alert, watch for that next week!) So, we invited my cute little niece to be our model for today. You may remember "the pea" from several toddler hairstyle videos on our YouTube channel when she was just a baby.  Can you believe she just turned 5?! She is so adorable and looks very cute wearing this star hair style.
Easy Star Hairstyle Tutorial

This basic concept can be used to create several different star hair variations, depending on your preference.  We have used rope braids, fishtail braids, ribbon braids, and multi strand braids to form the star in the past.  And instead of pigtails, you can finish off this style with buns, or braids if you prefer. When "The Princess" had shorter hair, we did sort of a "mini star version" using ribbon. If you have short hair, you can check that out here: Star Hairstyle For Short Hair

Supplies needed to recreate this style:
  • 5-8 small hair elastics.
  • Accessories such as festive ribbons, bows, etc. (optional)
  • Gel, pomade, finishing hairspray. (optional)

Happy Independence Day to all of our American viewers!

Star Bun - 4th Of July Hairstyles

Another star shaped hairstyle!

Star Bun Hairstyle Tutorial
For today's hair tutorial, we are creating a "star bun."  This would be a cute and patriotic hairstyle for the 4th of July. I could also see this working as a "dance bun" for ballerinas & figure skaters.
Star Hairstyle Tutorial
This style is sort of a combination of our braided bubble bun and our star pigtails.  We actually filmed this style quite awhile ago and have been waiting to post it for the 4th of July.  Along with this star bun... we filmed another cute variation, which we are both in love with!  So... watch for another fun and unique bun coming next week.  ;)
Star Updo Tutorial
As you may have guessed by looking at this style, we have used our Bun Maker or "hair donut" to create the base of this bun.  If you do not have a bun maker, you can always use a sock to create a sock bun instead.  There are many tutorials on YouTube showing how to do that. If you are wanting to purchase a bun maker, they are pretty common and fairly inexpensive.  We found ours at our local Sally Beauty Supply.

Star Shaped Hairstyle
We have used regular 3 strand braids to create our star.  Of course, you can use any type of braid or twist you want.  I'm thinking rope braids would be a super cute variation.

Supplies needed:
  • 2 hair elastics or hair ties
  • several bobby pins
  • a Bun Maker or sock bun
  • finishing hair spray (optional)

4th Of July Hairstyles, Aztec Carousel Braid Ponytail and Bun

Fourth Of July Hairstyles, Aztec Carousel Braid

Today's hair tutorial shows how to create 2 cute hairstyles (a ribbon braided ponytail and a bun) featuring the "Aztec Carousel Braid."

We choose colors inspired by the USA flag (red, white, and blue) for our video tutorial today, since Independence day is right around the corner.  But, these "4th of July hairstyles" are not just for July 4th!  This ponytail and bun will work for many occasions and with any color combinations you want.  I think both styles would be great for dance, gymnastics, sports, school, cheerleading, etc. Of course, you can change out the red and white stripes to match your school colors & sports team colors, or to go with your outfit for the day!

Aztec Carousel Braid Hairstyle

We have shown the photo above in our "waterfall ribbon twist braid" video as an example of what can be done with the waterfall ribbon twist, but have not shown how to make the carousel braid variation up until now.  We choose to name this variation of the waterfall ribbon twist the "Aztec carousel braid" because of the unique zig zag design the ribbon creates as it twists around the ponytail.  It reminds me of a design you would see on a rug or blanket out in the desert somewhere. ;)

Red, White, and Blue, Waterfall Twist Carousel Braid (Aztec Braid)
We chose red and white stripes with a blue ribbon accent at the top of the ponytail this time. But (as explained in our video tutorial below) you can really use as many different colors as you want in the ponytail itself.  If you wanted to incorporate blue into the carousel braid, you could easily add a 3rd (blue) ribbon into the pattern.

This ponytail design can also be wrapped up into a bun for another fun look.  Of course, buns are always a great option for keeping hair off of your neck in the summer and for sports! I love the pattern of the ribbon running through this bun.

Supplies Needed:
  • Ribbon.  We used 2 ribbons in the ponytail, 4 feet long each.
  • 1 medium size elastic
  • 1 small elastic

Shooting Star Braid Hairstyle

A diagonal French Braid with Rope Braid accents.
shooting star braid

This cute braided hairstyle would be great for summer, a fun 4th of July hairstyle, or perfect for dance, gymnastics, sports, school, swimming, skating... many occasions!

The Princess's Dad named this braid the "shooting star" and I think he nailed it perfectly.  The micro braids (or accent braids) spreading out into a triangular shape look just like the tail end of a shooting star!  If you have a star shaped hair clip, pin, bow, or even a star sticker, you could place it over the elastic to emphasis the shooting star look. (This would be especially cute if you are wearing this hairstyle for the Fourth of July. ;)

shooting star braid hairstyle tutorial

We love this style because although it is unique and eye catching, it is also very easy. We have combined some ordinary rope braids (or twist braids) and a basic French braid to create this shooting star braid.  Nothing too difficult.  ;)

Of course, you can mix things up and use any type of braids you want to form this design.  This hairstyle looks very cute with a diagonal Dutch braid instead of a French braid.  You could also finish this style with a bun instead of a side braid if you are looking for more of an updo.

diagonal french braid with twist braid accents

We used a Topsy Tail to flip the ponytail holding all of the micro braids under.  This is optional of course, I think it helps the style lay a little bit nicer.  You can leave the ponytail "as is" if you want... or if you want the ponytail flipped, but don't have a topsy tail, you can always use your fingers to flip the hair.

Supplies Needed:
  • 1 small, clear elastic (or similar to the color of hair you are working with.)
  • 1 medium size elastic.
  • Topsy Tail (optional.)
  • Several clips or hair ties to hold the ends of the micro braids while you are working.

Arrow Braid Hairstyle Tutorial

An "Arrow Braid" And A Fishtail Bun

Arrow braid and fishtail braid bun tutorial

The Princess named this braid the arrow braid because of the way the strands diagonally slant in towards the middle, forming tiny arrow points all the way down the braid!

Some of you may have noticed her hairstyle in our room tour video.  This is actually the same braid she was wearing that day, just finished in a different way.  During the room tour, she had an arrow braid on one side, connected at the back with a regular braid on the other side, with her hair mostly down.  Of course, the styles you could create using this braid are endless! As you can see in our video tutorial today, we opted for the braid on one side, ending in a fishtail braid bun. I'm loving the combination of the fishtail and arrow braids together, as the arrow braid looks kind of "fishtaily" to me anyway, so they seem to go together nicely!

Fishtail bun with arrow braid tutorial

I know a lot of you struggle with french braiding. So, I have tried to keep this braid fairly simple by using regular 3 strand feather braids.  Of course if you wanted to, you could use french braids, waterfall braids, or lace braids with this same basic concept for a slightly different look.

Arrow Braid With Fishtail Bun Video Tutorial: Click here to watch directly on YouTube.

Another hairstyle idea: In the pictures below, we made an arrow braid on one side and braided the ends into a regular 3 strand braid on the other side. If you lace braid the top section, it will hold its shape without having to connect the braid to something on the other side.  If you like wearing your hair down, I think it would look very pretty to create a diagonal lace arrow braid all the way across the back of her head!
arrow braid hair style
cage braid

And one more idea (since Independence Day for the U.S. is right around the corner.)  A patriotic 4th Of July Hairstyle!  For this look, we just wove some red, white, and blue ribbons through the strands of the arrow braid and tied a bow with the ribbons at the bottom. So fun!

The Colorful Fishtail Braid, 4th Of July Hairstyles

Fourth Of July Hairstyles
A Fishtail Braid With Ribbon

4th of July hairstyle, ribbon braid
This "colorful fishtail braid" ponytail hairstyle was made using patriotic colors with the 4th of July in mind (Indepdence Day for the US.) Of course, this braid could be created with any color combinations you would like for other occasions. This would be a cute hairstyle for sports, as it tends to stay in very well. You could even look for ribbon to match your team colors!

We like ponytail hairstyles for summer time.  It's nice to have a quick hairdo that keeps the hair out of your face, detangled, and off your neck for hot summer days. This braid could also be wrapped into a colorful fishtail bun if you desire.  ;)

If you are looking for a more grown up look, I would suggest clipping (or eliminating) the elastic at the top of the ponytail and stretching the strands of the braid as you work your way down, creating a trendy, tousled and messy fishtail braid.

Ribbon Fishtail Braid Hairstyle Video Tutorial:

And now.... a "bonus hairstyle."  ;)

4th Of July Ribbon Bun

We actually filmed both of these fourth of July hairstyle ideas about a month ago. I have been so busy lately with my kids being out of school for summer vacation, family reunions, and... life that I ran out of time to get both videos edited and uploaded.  Sooooo, here is our quick step by step "screen shot tutorial" of this fun patriotic bun!
You may have seen this adorable braided sock bun floating around on Pinterest lately? This is basically the same concept, using ribbon instead of braids.  Our ballet bun video may be helpful if you haven't seen this type of bun before.

Step 1: Run the ribbons you would like to use through an elastic and secure it to a small piece of hair placed right in the middle of where you would like the bun to be.

Step 2: Make a ponytail with all of the hair around the ribbon and add a bun foundation or homemade rolled up sock bun maker at the base of the ponytail.

Step 3:  Arrange the hair around the bun maker and secure with an elastic (leaving the ribbon out.)

Step 4:  Arrange the ribbon around the bun and secure with another elastic.

Step 5:  Pin the remaining hair/ribbon around the bun.  At this point we also added a scarf around the edges to help hide all of the ends.

PS: If you are looking for more patriotic hairstyles, we have done several over the past few years which can be found here: 4th of July Hairstyles
